  • Patent number: 5878755
Abstract: The present invention provides a device for holding hair in a bundle securely. The device consists of a cylindrical coiled shape with pitch slightly larger than inside diameter, made with a material of sufficient rigidity as to not flex. A bundle of hair, smaller than the pitch, yet larger than the inside diameter is inserted into a pitch gap and the bundle wound into the device until the hair is contained by the cylinder formed by the coils. The hair springs against the device, friction holding it in place. The device may then become a means to attach other ornaments which hang from the coil as additional adornments for the hair. Additionally, the coil itself may itself be decorated on the outside surface.

  • Patent number: 5875792
Abstract: Bendable foam-covered rod-like articles and a method and apparatus for their production are described. The method involves feeding an adhesive coated flexible core to an extruder, which in turn extrudes a low density, closed cell foam sheath about the core. The core and sheath composite is then cut into rod-like elements of predetermined length. Each of the rod-like elements is then restrained at a position spaced inwardly from one its ends, and an orificed plate and an element end are axially pressed together such that the core extends through the orifice in the plate and the foam sheath is compressed. The excess core extending through the plate orifice is then cut, and the pressure between the plate and the element is released, such that the foam sheath returns to its original condition, thereby producing a composite in which the core end is recessed into the foam sheath end. The end of the element is finished by sealing, preferably through the application of a hot brand.

  • Patent number: 5857468
Abstract: A hair forming device for arranging a pony tail or braid. The device comprises a series of rings each attached to an adjacent ring in end to end fashion. Adjacent rings overlap just enough to enable a connecting pin formed in one ring to pass through a hole formed in the adjacent ring, and thus connect the two rings. Any two adjacent rings may therefore be arranged to describe a figure eight. Hair is preferably divided into two braids, each braid being passed through each ring. The novel device secures the braids in this manner, and is worn as long as the hair style thus achieved is maintained. Preferably, the connecting pins are arranged parallel to the central axis of the circle described by each ring. In alternative embodiments, the pins permanently connect adjacent rings, or may removably connect adjacent rings, for example by snap fit. In a further alternative embodiment, the device is extended by adding rings and attaching the succession of rings in head to tail fashion, thus forming a closed loop.

  • Patent number: 5845657
Abstract: A hair foundation device for lifting, guiding and holding hair on a user's head has a hollow inner cup within a hollow open ended outer casing. The inner cup has a tubular outer surface, an open bottom end for locating adjacent the user's head, and an opposed top end having flexible spaced tines with openings therebetween for receiving hair. The outer casing has an interior surface for slideably engaging the outer surface of the inner cup, and an exterior surface fitted with bristle type material for gripping the hair being wound thereabout. The inner cup slides relative to the outer casing to adjust the device's height for accommodating a selection of hair lengths and styles. A raised hair-do is formed by gathering hair into locks and stuffing the locks through the openings. One or more of the locks may be wrapped over the bristle type material to help position and secure the device on the user's head. Hairpins or other securing devices are not required, although they may be employed if desired.

  • Patent number: 5832938
Abstract: A method for effecting a curled hair style includes weaving the strands of at least one ponytail through the hair foundation proximal to the ponytail, and then raising portions of the strands away from the foundation to establish respective curled segments of hair. A tool for establishing the hair style includes a cord that defines a noose having a circumference. A needle holds the cord, and the needle has a pointed distal end opposite the noose. A sleeve is slidably received in the needle and is engaged with the cord for selectively establishing the circumference of the noose. With this structure, the sleeve can be manipulated to loosen the noose, a strand disposed in the noose, and then the sleeve manipulated to tighten the noose around the strand to securely hold the strand. Then, the distal end of the needle is advanced into the foundation to accomplish the present weaving.

  • Patent number: 5638836
Abstract: A hair clip has a base plate (1, 101) having comb-tooth-shaped lugs (4, 104), and also has a hair retainer (2, 102) connected to the base plate. The hair retainer has one end engageable with and disengageable from one end of base plate. The lugs (4, 104) are effective to render the hair clip more retentive on the user's hair. The hair retainer (2, 102) can swing or slide relative to the base plate (1, 101) so as to expose and use the comb-tooth-shaped lugs (4, 104) as a hair brush or as a comb, with the hair retainer then serving as a handgrip.

  • Patent number: 5622194
Abstract: A hairband having a band portion and two end portions is provided. One of the end portions comprises an elastic loop portion or female portion. The other end portion comprises a narrow portion and an adjacent, wider, engaging male portion. In its relaxed state, the loop portion has an inside diameter that is smaller than the male portion. With the hairband formed in this manner, the two ends can easily be connected. The male portion is pushed through the loop portion, expanding the loop portion. Once the male portion is through, the loop portion relaxes, contracting around the narrow portion.

  • Patent number: 5598585
Abstract: A headband designed particularly, but not limited exclusively, for a person having a ponytail includes an elongated member having an inner surface, an outer surface, a first generally U-shaped end having a pair of outwardly extending legs, and a second generally U-shaped end having a pair of outwardly extending legs. The headband further includes a pair of hook-type VELCRO strips placed on the outer surface of the outwardly extending legs of the first generally U-shaped end and a pair of loop-type VELCRO strips, fastenable with the pair of hook-type VELCRO strips, placed on the inner surface of the outwardly extending legs of the second generally U-shaped end. The pair of hook-type VELCRO strips and the pair of loop-type VELCRO strips serve as a means for attaching the first generally U-shaped end to the second generally U-shaped end. The attachment of the first generally U-shaped end to the second generally U-shaped end creates a generally oval opening enabling the pony tail to pass therethrough.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for styling hair includes a latch mechanism for releasably securing a hair styling device about a plurality of hair strands. The latch mechanism is adapted to interconnect first and second pivotally interconnected elongated members of the hair styling device and includes a first latch member disposed substantially adjacent a first end of the first elongated member and a second latch member disposed substantially adjacent a first end of the second elongated member. The first and second latch members are adapted to releasably engage one another. At least one of the first and second elongated latch is elastically deformable. In the preferred embodiment, each of the latch members includes a first segment having a free end spaced apart from an adjacent surface of its respective elongated member.
