Abstract: Provided is a novel flow control system that includes multiple modifier columns for positioning across a waterway. Bottom ends of the columns are attached to a bottom track extension, for example, at the bottom of the waterway. The columns are sufficiently light so that the buoyancy force pushes their top ends towards the surface forming a “curtain-like” structure that provides resistance to the water flow. Spacing between the columns and other characteristics may be used to adjust this resistance. The columns may be repositioned along the track to change the spacing and/or to form an open pass. The columns are sufficiently robust and may swivel with respect to their bottom support such that their upper portions contact passing vessels. The system may be used to control flow through energy extracting devices or be a part of flood control systems.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing undesirable pressure fluctuations over predetermined pressure and frequency ranges in a working fluid system, facilitating maintenance of appropriate levels of stored energy in the fluid system. Embodiments may be employed within a fluid system to dampen pressure fluctuations over an adequately large pressure range, for example in a resonant vibratory system. In such systems, pressures vary dramatically depending on whether resonance is achieved. An apparatus comprises a pressure vessel having a self equilibrating flexible piston device. The piston separates a gas volume from a fluid volume exposed to the system flow. The piston translates within the pressure vessel to equilibrate the gas and fluid pressures. A flexible portion of the piston deflects at high frequency and adequate volume to reduce undesirable pressure fluctuations. The flexible portion translates force via its outer periphery to a ring portion which translates within the pressure vessel.

Abstract: A drinking straw for progressively adding an active ingredient to a carrier liquid as the liquid is drawn through the straw. The straw includes a generally elongate tubular body having an internal bore and a sidewall. The tube includes first and second filters and disposed at respective first and second ends and, of the tube. Together, the first and second filters retain a predetermined measure of soluble active ingredients within the bore of the tube, while allowing a carrier liquid to be drawn through the straw, by oral suction. The active ingredient, takes the form of a plurality of solid pellets. Each filter is formed by blocking, closing or constricting the tube at or adjacent the corresponding end and providing at least one aperture sized to be sufficiently small to retain the pellets within the tube whilst sufficiently large to allow passage of liquid.

Abstract: The fluidic system with an unclogging feature of the preferred embodiment includes a flow channel, a sheath pump to pump sheath fluid from a sheath container into an interrogation zone, and a waste pump to pump waste fluid from the interrogation zone into a waste container. The sheath pump and/or the waste pump draw sample fluid from a sample container into the interrogation zone. The fluidic system also includes a controller to adjust the flow rate of the sample fluid from the sample container into the interrogation zone. The pump and controller cooperate to propagate a pulsation through the flow channel from the pump if the flow channel is clogged. The fluidic system is preferably incorporated into a flow cytometer with a flow cell that includes the interrogation zone.
