Patent number: 6030480Abstract: A method and apparatus for manufacturing prestressed piezoelectric actuators which maximizes output, and increases the precision and efficiency with which the multi-layer actuators are made. Individual layers of the piezoelectric actuators are automatically stacked and registered with respect to each other within press members prior to bonding the layers to each other with a thermoplastic adhesive. Compressive force is applied while heat is conductively transferred from a heating element to the actuator in order to raise the temperature of each of the layers above the melting point of the thermoplastic. The temperature of the heating element is then decreased until the temperature of the actuator layers drops to below the melting point of the thermoplastic adhesive, thereby bonding the layers. Compressive force is then released, and the actuators are removed, further cooled and polarized.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1998Date of Patent: February 29, 2000Assignee: Face International Corp.Inventors: Samuel A. Patent number: 5662760Abstract: The present invention provides a method of manufacturing high quality laminated veneer lumber from pre-flattened wood veneer, for such uses as in architecture and furniture, and a method of mass production thereof using veneer which is flattened in advance. A sheet of veneer is first obtained by cutting a log with a rotary lathe or the like, and flattening and cutting the veneer into a predetermined length. Sheets of veneer thus obtained are cut on both edges in the grain direction to form symmetrically diagonal end faces, and are bonded with one another at these end faces with their grain directions aligned to form an elongated sheet of veneer. The resultant elongated sheet veneer is cut into a predetermined length to form laminated veneer material having seams. Plural sheets thus formed laminated veneer material are laminated and bonded with their grain directions aligned to form laminated veneer core.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 1995Date of Patent: September 2, 1997Inventor: Sotaro Tsuda

Patent number: 5624524Abstract: A plastic laminate includes an acrylic sheet and layer of paint disposed thereon. A polyester sheet has a layer of adhesive disposed thereon. The adhesive layer is bonded directly to the paint layer. The laminate is formed by applying the paint layer to the acrylic sheet and thoroughly drying the paint layer. The polyester sheet is heated to a temperature to melt the hot melt adhesive and the heated adhesive is applied to the paint layer under pressure while the paint layer is being cooled. The entire laminate is then also cooled to room temperature under pressure.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 1995Date of Patent: April 29, 1997Inventor: Carl C. Gordon

Patent number: 5616199Abstract: A device for electronically seam fusing similar or dissimilar multiple polymeric materials by placing the materials between two opposing plates, wherein the plates have cooling tubes disposed within the plates and have the required combination of heating elements, non-stick heat barriers, and configuration enhancers disposed thereon. The opposing plates are then closed by a force which is regulated by a control feature which also governs the timing, length and temperature that is utilized by the heat elements and cooling tubes of the invention. Upon completion of the electronic seam fuse cycle, the multiple layers of polymeric materials are fused together, and separated if desired, thus creating a seam that is as strong or stronger than the individual material. The selection of seam fusing process parameters is determined by employing an optimization process that considers the impact each process parameter has in combination with one another.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1995Date of Patent: April 1, 1997Assignee: Enclosure Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Eran J. Patent number: 5593532Abstract: The invention concerns a process and equipment for manufacturing laminated photovoltaic modules, where (a) a module-stack (2) formed by the system of solar cells, the encapsulating materials and the separating foils is deposited at the loading station (1) and where (b) the module-stack (2) is moved into the vacuum laminator (5) which thereupon is closed and evacuated, and, by pressing the heater plate (21) against the thermally conductive carrier plate (3), said stack is heated to the softening point of the plastic sealing layers present in the encapsulating materials, and where (c) following airing of the vacuum laminator (5) the heater plate (21) is not cooled and the formed composite (2') is moved into the hardening oven (10) and where (d) the hardened laminate (2") is then moved into the cooling zone (12) and (e) is removed from the manufacturing process at the removal station (14). The process stages (a) through (e) of the invention are carried out simultaneously and parallelly in timed manner.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1995Date of Patent: January 14, 1997Assignee: Isovolta Osterreichische Isolierstoffwerke AktiengesellschaftInventors: Johann Falk, Albert K. Patent number: 5582674Abstract: A composite integral sheet of wrap material which includes a first layer of absorbent material containing fibers bearing foraminous hydrophobic water-vapor-permeable pellicles, a second layer of printable material and an impermeable pigmented polymer layer interposed between the first and second layers. Additionally, the absorbent layer will include highly absorbent material formed by in-situ crosslinking of a partially pre-neutralized polyacrylic acid. The composite wrap material has a plurality of air pockets formed between at least one of the first or second layers and the polymer layer, by discontinuously bonding the first or second layers to the polymer material. A method of making the composite integral sheet.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: December 10, 1996Assignee: The James River CorporationInventors: Robert Patterson, Daniel J. Patent number: 5580412Abstract: A method and an apparatus for the production of a three-dimensional textile (3), wherein the textile (3) is formed from two sheets of textile (5, 6) placed face to face and connected together by a plurality of threads (10), impregnated with resin and inserted between two layers (16, 17) so as to form a layered structure (1). This layered structure (1) is inserted between two dies (25, 26) of a heated press which is subsequently closed to allow the resin impregnating the structure to distribute itself uniformly. The layers (16, 17) are then attached by vacuum to the faces of the dies (25, 26) which are then opened through a first controlled distance within the limit of the elastic recovery of the three-dimensional textile (3). The outermost layers of the structure (1) are then polymerized by heating the dies (24, 26) while the resin impregnating the threads (10) remains in a plastic state.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1995Date of Patent: December 3, 1996Assignee: Metalleido S.R.L.Inventor: Marco Fantino

Patent number: 5571369Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a honeycomb structure in which a plurality of thermoplastic layers are fused together at selected locations. The thermoplastic layers at each of the selected locations are melted together to form a welded portion which includes first and second exterior surfaces. The welding of the thermoplastic layers is controlled so that no more than one of the exterior surfaces is melted. This partial melting of one layer prevents undesirable welding to adjacent layers. Patent number: 5565049Abstract: The subject matter of this invention relates to a method of making glass fiber mat reinforcement material with a thermoplastic adhesive powder. Fiberglass strands are chopped and randomly air dropped onto a Teflon.RTM. coated conveyor belt to form a loose mat. A water mist is then applied to the loose mat and transport belt, before a powdered adhesive is dispensed. Heat is applied to plasticize the adhesive and finally the adhesive is solidified by cooling. The adhesive will then release from the transport belt and is adhered to the material forming the fiberglass reinforcement mat.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1995Date of Patent: October 15, 1996Assignee: Astechnologies, Inc.Inventors: F.
