Abstract: The present invention provides a method of making a laminated, gathered, elastic web. The method includes the steps of feeding a first substrate in a machine direction, feeding a second substrate aligned with the first substrate in the machine direction, and feeding an array of elastomeric strand material between the first and second substrates in such a manner that the elastomeric strand material is stretched in the machine direction and aligned with the first and second substrates. A hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive, such as a styrene-isoprene-styrene based adhesive, is applied to one substrate, and a curable adhesive, such as a polyurethane based adhesive, is applied to the other substrate. Thereafter, the two substrates and the elastomeric strand material are compressed to form a laminate elastic web while maintaining the elastomeric strand material in its stretched state. Machine direction tension is maintained on the laminate until the hot melt adhesive cools and bonds the layers together.

  • Patent number: 6242510
Abstract: A pressure sensitive adhesive composition comprised of a substantially tacky polymer containing a number of prismatic or holographic platelets. When the composition is applied to a substrate, the platelets align themselves in a planar fashion parallel to the broad face of the surface on which the coating is applied. The resulting composition layer is transparent except for the platelets that refract and reflect the light striking the platelets back towards an observer. The color of the reflected light changes as the angle at which the platelets are viewed is changed. In this manner, the platelets in the coating provide an overall aesthetically pleasing appearance for the coated material that adds distinctiveness to decorative labeling, as well as to the objects on which the labeling is placed and other suitable types of laminations in which the adhesive coating may be used.

  • Patent number: 6184298
Abstract: The invention relates to adhesive compositions having a modified polyethylene; an unmodified polyethylene of a certain density and a styrene-based elastomer. The styrene-based elastomer is present in a weight percentage of 10 to 45 wt. percent relative to the total weight of the elastomer plus the modified and unmodified polyethylenes. The adhesive composition is particularly useful in multilayer composite structures having polypropylene as one substrate and having bonded thereto a polyethylene or a layer which is made from an ethylene copolymer such as an ethylene/acid copolymer or an ethylene acid ionomer. In addition, the adhesive composition is particularly useful in multilayer structures having five layers wherein a single adhesive composition is needed as layer two and four and the other structural layers are, for example, polyethylene/ nylon/polypropylene or similar structures which would heretofore require two different polyolefin based adhesives.
