    Abstract: Novel lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resins, suitable for use as wood bonding adhesives, are provided by a two-step method which comprises reacting formaldehyde and phenol in the presence of an alkaline catalyst for a period sufficient to produce a partially condensed phenol-formaldehyde resin, thereafter reacting said precondensed resin with sodium hydroxide, formaldehyde and a lignin concentrate having at least 40% solids and comprising lignin dissolved in (a) phenol and water; or (b) phenol, water and sodium hydroxide or ammonia, the lignin to phenol weight ratios in said solution being less than 70:30 and more than 40:60. The second stage of the method is conducted at reflux temperature initially after which reaction is conducted below reflux temperature to control the degree of condensation.

    Abstract: An aqueous alkaline dispersion of a rubbery graft low gel vinyl pyridine copolymer and a water soluble, heat reactive phenolic resin is useful in forming an adhesive for bonding polyamide or polyester reinforcing elements or cords to rubber compounds or stocks. After dipping the polyamide or polyester cord in the one-step adhesive dip, the coated cord is heated to dry it and heat cure or heat set the adhesive on the cord. Thereafter, the adhesive containing polyamide or polyester cord is combined with, or laminated to (calendered), a curable rubber compound and the resulting assembly is cured to form a composite in which the polyamide or polyester cord is bonded to the rubber by means of said adhesive.

Phenol, water and an alkaline catalyst, limited to 0.5-2.2 moles of catalyst per 100 moles of phenol and preferably lithium carbonate, are mixed with formaldehyde at 1.9-5.0 formaldehyde to phenol ratios. The reaction mixture is heated at a uniform rate over 1 hour to reflux temperature and refluxed until a viscosity of 400-500 centipoise at 50-75% solids is attained. The mixture is cooled to 50.degree. C.

The dispersions of this invention result in improved aged adhesion and lower fabric stiffness than the older resorcinol-formaldehyde latex dispersions.

    Abstract: A process for making a phenol-aldehyde resin adhesive is disclosed in which a portion of the phenol ingredient is replaced with ammonium lignosulfonate. Solid ammonia base waste sulfite liquor residue is dissolved or suspended in phenol and the mixture is heated to a temperature range of 150.degree.-300.degree. C under autogenous pressure until the resulting phenol-ammonium lignosulfonate component of the reaction mass is water insoluble but soluble in aqueous sodium hydroxide. The reaction mass may be washed with water to remove soluble wood sugars and their derivatives. The phenol-ammonium lignosulfonate component may then be condensed with an aldehyde resulting in a resin product that is useful as an exterior adhesive, having suitable water insolubility and adhesive characteristics. The ratio of ammonium lignosulfonate to phenol may range from 2:1 to 1:10, depending upon the desired properties of the finished adhesive.

    Abstract: A synthetic resin product which may be used for gluing wood products and the like comprises a lignin and a low molecular weight liquid which is capable of penetrating, swelling and reacting with the lignin to form a hardened product. The low molecular weight liquid may be a solution consisting essentially of formaldehyde and phenol and may also contain an acid or alkaline hardener. Examples of acid hardeners include ammonium chloride, paratoluene sulphonic acid and the like, whereas examples of an alkaline hardener include sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide and the like. The formed resin product is very suitable as an adhesive and utilizes lignin not ordinarily suitable as an adhesive and generally regarded as a waste material.
