  • Patent number: 5643398
Abstract: An apparatus and method for sealing a loose tail of wound material against a log using an infeed and log reject station, a tail separator station and a tail ironing and log discharge station. The apparatus and method receives a log on a pair of rider rolls and directs one or more air jets against the log to cause the tail to extend away from the log and captures the tail on a vacuum table as controlled by an optical sensor monitoring the table. The log then progresses to a glue table where a stripe of glue is applied through an aperture in the table by a glue transfer bar rotating out from being submerged in a glue reservoir. The log is then received between three ironing rolls which compress the tail against the log and discharge the log from the ironing rolls by moving an ejector arm from a rest position between two of the ironing rolls towards the third ironing roll to an ejecting position intermediate all three ironing rolls.

  • Patent number: 5626707
Abstract: A frame, a drive mechanism for rotating a mandrel, at least two spindles mounted to the frame, a tensioner, and a belt extending between the first and second spindles may be used to roll pre-preg strips or similar sheets of composite materials around the mandrel. The belt travels over the spindles, and the spindles guide the belt through changes in its direction of travel. The mandrel is mounted in the drive mechanism in contact with the belt, which changes its direction of travel around the mandrel. The lower surface of the belt bears against upper portions of the spindles, and the mandrel contacts the upper surface of the belt. As the drive mechanism rotates the mandrel, pre-preg sheets are fed between the mandrel and the belt and are thereby wrapped around the mandrel. The belt presses the pre-preg sheets against the mandrel. The wrapped mandrel may then be removed from the apparatus and cured in any suitable manner known in the art to produce a composite tubular article.

  • Patent number: 5620544
Abstract: A method and apparatus of forming coreless rolls of pressure sensitive adhesive tape involves the use of a mandrel assembly having a specific circumferential tape supporting segment thereon for winding tape. The circumferential tape supporting segment has a tape engaging surface portion that, in a radial orientation, is compressible yet sufficiently stiff to support the tape as it is successively wound about the mandrel to form a tape roll, and that is sufficiently pliant to permit ready axial removal of a wound tape roll from the shaft. The innermost wrap of pressure sensitive adhesive tape about the mandrel is masked by an adhesive liner. That liner is formed from one portion of a liner/tab segment which had been applied to the tape previously, and prior to winding, the tape is severed, and the remainder of that liner/tab forms an end tab on the outermost end of the previously formed coreless tape roll.

Abstract: A paper web having a longitudinally extending zone coat of adhesive is continuously wound around the cylindrical surface of a rotating drum for a selected number of wraps to form a multi-layer cylindrical master stack. Web tension is controlled during winding to cause each succeeding wrap to be placed in relatively greater tension, so that when the completed cylindrical stack is cut transversely and unwrapped from the drum, equalization of the tensile stresses in the web wraps results in a flat master stack of rectangular sheets of equal length. The stack is further processed by cutting along transverse and longitudinal cut lines to form individual pads of adhesive-backed notes. Tension control may be based directly on the increase in drum radius resulting from the buildup of web wraps or by maintenance of print pattern register between continuous equally spaced print patterns in overlying wraps.

The leading edge of a label is adhered to a container as it orbits past a vacuum-type label transfer drum. Abstract: An apparatus for applying thin film polymer labels onto small cylindrical articles includes a label transport drum that is constructed for aiding the transfer of a label onto a cylindrical article. The apparatus includes a label transport drum having a cylindrically configured hub and cylindrical drum mounted on the hub for rotation thereabout. The drum has an outer surface on which labels are fed while the drum is rotated about the hub. A first radially extending, slotted vacuum manifold defines a label retention area and extends circumferentially around a substantial portion of the circumference of the hub. A first radially extending slotted pressure manifold is aligned circumferentially after the slotted vacuum manifold at an article wrapping position. A valve port, circumferentially aligned with the vacuum and pressure manifolds is positioned on the inner surface of the drum and communicates with the area on the drum surface where the leading edge of the label lies.

Abstract: A unidirectional material for helicopter parts is fabricated by winding a composite-material roving delivered from a feeding mechanism of a filament winding device around and between a plurality of pins provided on a mandrel rotating about the longitudinal axis thereof, the roving feeding mechanism being moved in a traversing manner such that the feeding path of the roving becomes a figure eight figure, whereby the roving is thus wound to form a tubular mesh of obliquely crossing and staggered helixes of the roving around the mandrel. The material has an improved strength in a transverse direction of the mandrel.

Abstract: A chuck (4) grasping the front edge of a tire component material (S) which is supplied from a material feeder (3) generates a motional locus through an initial ascending motion and through a forward motion toward the former and through a subsequent descending motion to the former to lay the front edge onto the carcass (T). A pressing mechanism (6) operates to press the introduced material (S) on the carcass (T), and concurrently the former (2) rotates by a predetermined rotation angle to adhere the tire component material (S) onto the carcass (T). Thereafter a cutter assembly (5) operates to cut the tire component material (S) in a length corresponding to the sum of a required length for joint and a full circumferential length of the carcass. The former (2) rotates again to adhere the tire component material (S) onto the full circumference of the carcass (T), and the front edge and a last edge of the tire component material are jointed by the pressing mechanism (6) so that the adhesion is completed.
