Fluted Roll-shape Retainer Patents (Class 156/472)
  • Patent number: 6149751
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing a single face corrugated web from an adhesively bonded liner and medium web without the use of a pressure roll nip where the liner web is joined to the medium web. A heated bonding roll with a fluted outer surface carries the single face web around a circumferential portion sufficient to create a green bond in the glue lines before the web is removed from the roll. The bonding roll may be internally heated or a steam chamber may be positioned around a portion of a lower bonding roll, such that the steam chamber introduces a supply of steam into contact with the single face web while the single face web is in contact with the outer circumference of the bonding roll. An adjustable wrap arm places the freshly glued single face web in contact with the bonding roll and tension in the liner web is controlled to adjust the radial force applied to the glue lines.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a single facer, which comprises a humidifying and heating unit placed on the upstream side of an air pressurization corrugating mechanism for humidifying and heating a corrugating medium and a feed mechanism for supplying the corrugating medium, processed by the humidifying and heating unit, to the air pressurization corrugating mechanism at a given speed. The corrugating medium is supplied at the given speed after the humidification and heating process for the corrugating medium, so that an air pressure to be taken at the corrugation is reducible and a predetermined flute configuration is maintainable. In addition, the spring back of the corrugating medium hardly occurs, which makes it possible to manufacture a corrugated fiberboard sheet with a high shock absorbing ability.

  • Patent number: 6095963
Abstract: A paperboard corrugating machine for forming board having two corrugated mediums joined at their flute tips without any intervening liner. The machine comprises a relatively heavy main frame (11) and a second frame (12) which is mounted for movement on the main frame. The main frame (11) carries two rolls (13 and 14) and the second frame (12) carries two rolls (15 and 16). Frame (12) can be locked into position and loaded against the upper roll (13), and the four rolls (13, 14, 15 and 16) lie in a single plane when the rolls are operational. With this construction, movement and twisting of the rolls (13 and 15) relative to each other, between which the fluted mediums are aligned flute tip to flute tip, is reduced.

  • Patent number: 6089296
Abstract: An apparatus for preconditioning a medium web on a corragator before fluting the medium web during the manufacturing process of corrugated paperboard uses steam flows and pressures to press the medium web against a hot plate assembly. A plurality of elongated steam showers are located within a steam chamber secured to the preconditioning apparatus. The steam chamber wall structure includes a sealed web inlet and sealed web outlet for the medium web. The velocity and pressure (e.g., average steam pressure within steam chamber approximately 0.1 to 0.3 psi) of steam injected into the steam chamber holds the medium web against hot plates to promote heat transfer from the hot plates to the medium web. In addition, the medium web is heated directly by the latent heat of steam condensation, and also moistened directly by the condensation of the steam. A vacuum may or may not be used to increase the pressure of the medium web against the hot plates.

  • Patent number: 6074507
Abstract: Corrugating rolls for forming corrugated paperboard medium are given a flute valley profile having a narrow channel along the valley base between arcuate segments of the valley base that parallel the channel on opposite sides of a radial plane of symmetry. This valley base channel is of such depth as to relieve the fiber compression stress between cooperatively nipping flute tip and valley surfaces along the axial plane between respective corrugating rolls. One advantage of the invention is to increase the on-line time of plated rolls by limiting accelerated wear of the plating in the valley base channels of the rolls. The invention also provides an improved corrugating medium characterized by flute tips which are relatively less compressed as compared to adjacent flanking regions.

  • Patent number: 6068701
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying adhesive to the flutes of corrugated board to bond a face thereto. An applicator roll is provided with a uniform thin coating of adhesive by a flexible bar urged toward the surface of the applicator roll. A rider roll is provided adjacent the applicator roll and at the same height to form a vertical space for passage of the board therebetween so that the amount of glue applied to the tip of the flutes is directly proportional to the speed of the applicator roll. The space between the applicator roll and the rider roll is precisely controlled to minimize the amount of crush or deformation of the flutes during the application of the adhesive thereto. The dwell time in which the flutes are in contact with the adhesive layer on the applicator roll is reduced by minimizing the size of the rider roll and wrapping the face substantially around the rider roll.

Abstract: A single facer including a preheater for conditioning a paperboard web. The preheater is positioned upstream form a corrugating nip and includes an arcuate surface facing the web. A plurality of primary channels are disposed internally within the preheater in thermal communication with the arcuate surface. High pressure steam is supplied to the primary channels for heating the arcuate surface. A plurality of outlet ports extend within the preheater and are in fluid communication with the heated arcuate surface. Low pressure steam is released through the plurality of outlet ports thereby producing a steam film between the heated arcuate surface and the paperboard web. The steam film dramatically increases heat transfer to the paperboard web while also reducing frictional forces opposing movement of the web.

Abstract: An embossed paper laminate having two laminae. The laminae are embossed so that each embossed site of one lamina is adhesively joined to the nonembossed region of the other lamina. The laminate is made by two close tolerance pattern rolls juxtaposed to form a nip. Each pattern roll has radially extending protuberances which contact the periphery of the other pattern roll intermediate its protuberances. The laminae are fed through the nip in face-to-face relationship and are embossed and adhesively joined to the other lamina by the radially extending protuberances.

  • Patent number: 5419796
Abstract: The invention is a method of fluting corrugating medium which can be formed in conventional or unconventional flute configurations. The method employs at least one additional corrugating roll in addition to the usual two. The first pair of rolls create initial flutes in the medium. Initially fluted medium is then transferred to a third roll of lesser flute pitch than the first rolls. In this manner the initially created flutes can be reformed into configurations not possible using conventional systems. A fourth roll can be used to achieve additional flute pitch reduction. Using this method flutes with very sharply angled tips can be formed. Other embodiments enable formation of less conventional cross sectional configurations such as flutes with asymmetric patterns.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for molding foamed materials for use as carpet underpadding is disclosed. In one aspect, the process and apparatus involves pulling a sheet of a foamed material through a first set of pull rolls at a first pull rate followed by heating the foamed material in order to decompose blowing agent present in the sheet thereby causing the sheet to expand or thicken. The heated sheet is then pulled through a second set of pull rolls which pull the heated sheet at a faster rate than the first pull rate in order to stretch the expanded sheet so that it returns to its original thickness. The surface of one of the rolls of the second set is provided with dimples or indentations uniformly spread on the surface thereof for producing protrusions on one side of the heated sheet.
