  • Patent number: 7871483
Abstract: Provided is a method for enhancing an adhesive bond between a pile and a resin adhesive by maintaining a constant uniform positive pressure of the entire wrapped region regardless of the shrinkage in the resin adhesive. This invention enhances underwater adhesive bond by ensuring proper contact while curing. In one embodiment, constant inward pressure is created by encapsulating the repair and applying a vacuum. The invention can be used for a variety of underwater applications using different resins and different substrate materials. For instance, the invention could be used to repair damaged critical infrastructure, e.g. Bridges, dams, pipelines and locks. Local, state and federal agencies in US and elsewhere as well as marine and naval contractors would find great utility with the invention. The concept could be extended to all adhesion dependent repairs.

  • Patent number: 7846283
Abstract: A method for reducing cost and weight in paint roller manufacturing processes and other continuous processes for producing tubular goods from polymers. The method may utilize a perforated substrate such as a perforated polypropylene strip or may include a perforating step which removes overage from an unperforated substrate. The perforated substrate is fed onto a mandrel to form a tube. Adhesive is applied upon the outer surface of the perforated substrate. A cover may be applied about the tube, and the resulting product is then cut into finished-size paint rollers. The removal of the overage results in a reduction in the weight of the paint roller. In certain embodiments the overage from a perforation step is collected, and may be reused in a subsequent implementation of the method or resold.

  • Patent number: 7695585
Abstract: A method and system for repairing an insulation blanket having a metallized fabric that becomes disbanded from an underlying layer of the insulation blanket. The method includes cutting a first slit in the metallized fabric near a disbanded portion of the fabric, inserting a repair material through the first slit such that the repair material is between the disbanded portion of the fabric and the underlying layer, and adhering the disbonded fabric and the underlying layer to the repair material to restore the functionality of the metallized fabric.

Abstract: A method is disclosed for repairing or strengthening a damaged portion of a pipe. A patch of required dimensions is prepared from a composite laminate having a fabric layer with a plurality of fibers embedded into a cured resin. The pipe is then prepared to receive the patch and the epoxy resin is applied to an outside surface of the patch. The patch is then coiled and secured around a mandrel and transported thereby to the damaged portion of the pipe through an open end thereof, such that during transport through the pipe the patch does not contact the inside surface of the pipe. A bladder inside the coiled patch is pressurized to force the unrolling of the patch to contact the inside surface of the patch. The pressure is maintained against the patch until the epoxy resin is substantially cured, whereupon the bladder is deflated and removed with the mandrel from the pipe. A method of repairing such a pipe while fluid flows therethrough, and a method of repairing a corrugated steel pipe, is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7686905
Abstract: A method for reestablishing the electrical continuity of an electrically conductive layer of a composite aircraft wing damaged by a lightning strike or other mechanical event is disclosed in which a copper patch replaced the damaged section of the electrically conductive layer contained. The repair is performed by first removing any surfacers, fasteners, and damaged electrically conductive layer to expose a portion of the underlying composite skin. A copper patch having a copper foil section coupled to an unsupported film adhesive is then introduced onto an underlying composite skin opening contained within an undamaged section of a copper foil grid and covered with resin-impregnated fiberglass material. The film adhesive and resin-impregnated fiberglass material are then cured and fasteners are then reinserted within the fiberglass material, copper patch and underlying composite skin. The surface of the composite wing is then reprimed and repainted to complete the repair.

Abstract: A polyurethaneurea system that includes in some embodiments Parts A and B reaction components for a polyurethaneurea, wherein an exemplary embodiment provides a Part A that comprises between 55 and 75 wt. % of an oligomeric polyol, between 3 and 7 wt. % of an aromatic diamine chain extender, and between 0.1 and 1.5% of a reactivity catalyst; Part B includes between 1 and 15 wt. % of a short aromatic diisocyanate and between 5 and 35 wt. % of an aromatic diisocyanate prepolymer that is the reaction product of a short aromatic diisocyanate and a diol. The polyurethaneurea system may further comprise an elastomer-surface activator comprising a second short aromatic diisocyanate and a second aromatic diisocyanate prepolymer, wherein at least one of the second diisocyanates may be the same as at least one of the diisocyanates of Part B.

Abstract: Paint replacement films of the invention comprise at least one adhesive layer; at least one pigmented layer; and at least one polymer layer that is essentially free of low surface energy materials. In addition, paint replacement composite articles and related methods of the invention comprise a paint replacement film and a topcoat on a surface of the paint replacement film opposite the adhesive layer. Paint replacement films and composite articles of the invention are useful when applied to a variety of articles (e.g., a motorized vehicle such as an aircraft).

Abstract: The present application is directed to methods of preparing a wet composite patch for use in various applications, such as, for example, reworking a composite part of an aircraft. The method comprises heating the composite patch to a temperature that causes resin containing gaseous components to flow from the patch through a flow path. The gaseous components are vented from the resin while restricting the flow of resin from the composite patch by restricting the flow of resin through the flow path. Systems for performing the methods of the present application are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20100018631
Abstract: A method of repairing and renewing a manhole chimney utilizes a circumferentially stretchable liner sleeve which is inserted into the manhole and pressed by an inflatable bladder into engagement with the walls of the manhole chimney. The sleeve is coated with an uncured resin, which is allowed to cure as the sleeve is pressed against the chimney walls, thereby attaching the sleeve to the walls of the manhole chimney. The stretchable sleeve eliminates air spaces between the sleeve and the chimney walls, and precludes formation of undesirable folds in the sleeve. The sleeve stretches circumferentially up to 150% of its unstretched diameter, while having a substantially unstretchable length.
