    Abstract: An absorbent paper sheet is treated with an aqueous wax dispersion such that the sheet includes a fused wax and emulsifier residue in an amount of from about 1 to about 20 weight percent of the sheet based on the combined weight of the fiber, wax residue and an emulsifier residue in the sheet. The fused wax emulsion operates to make at least one surface of the sheet laterally hydrophobic, exhibiting a moisture penetration delay of at least about 2 seconds and less than about 40 seconds as well as a typical contact angle with water at one minute of at least about 50 degrees. There is thus provided absorbent products which exhibit both absorbency and resistance to moisture penetration. The treated sheet further exhibits microbial barrier properties, impeding transfer of bacteria, for example, through the sheet. There are produced tissue products which resist moisture penetration from propelled liquids as well as sequester sorbed liquids in the interior of the tissue.

The invention also includes blended cellulose compositions comprising a minor proportion of cross-linked mercerized cellulosic fibers and a major proportion of other cellulosic fibers. The invention further provides individualized, chemically cross-linked mercerized cellulosic fibers of high purity.

    Abstract: A method for forming a tissue product that is soft and produces relatively low levels of slough is provided. The method includes providing a liquid furnish of cellulosic fibers and forming a multi-layered wet web therefrom. The web is dried (e.g., through-dried) to a solids consistency of 90% or greater. A latex having a glass transition temperature less than about 30° C. is applied to the dried web (e.g., foamed, printed, sprayed, etc.) such that the latex comprises less than about 3% by weight of the dry weight of the web. The latex remains substantially uncured after being applied to the dried web.

The resulting molecule is a modified polysaccharide having an aliphatic moiety which can provide several potential benefits, depending on the specific combination employed, including: (a) strength aids that do not impart stiffness; (b) softeners that do not reduce strength; (c) wet strength with improved wet/dry strength ratio; (d) debonders with reduced linting and sloughing; (e) strength aids with controlled absorbency; and (f) surface sizing agents with improved tactile properties.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for producing a coated paper web. According to the process, a paper web is formed from a fibrous raw material in a paper machine, the paper web is coated with a pigment-containing coating mix, and the coated paper web is calendered.     Abstract: The present invention is a method for uniformly applying a foam to a wet tissue web is provided. Specifically, a foam is first formed from a liquid-based composition and a gas, such as air. Once formed, the foam is applied by a foam applicator to the wet tissue web. In one embodiment, for example, the foam applicator applies the foam with a flexible scraper contacting the wet tissue web during the application of the foam. When applied with the foam, the wet tissue web typically has a solids consistency less than about 95% by dry weight of the tissue web.     Abstract: In the manufacture of tissue products from cellulose fibers, it is often desirable to enhance physical properties by the addition of chemical additives, including for example debonding agents. These additives serve to prevent or disrupt interfiber or intrafiber hydrogen bonding. Depending upon the nature of the chemical additive, debonding agents may also act as softening agents. During the papermaking process, chemical additives of this type can be added to fiber slurries in the wet end of a papermaking machine. The chemical additives may include quaternary ammonium salts or organofunctional polysiloxanes.
