  • Patent number: 8469142
Abstract: The invention provides a muffler assembly (10) for exhaust gas flow communication with an engine exhaust. The assembly (10) includes a muffler (12) having inlet and outlet ports (14, 16). The assembly (10) also includes first and second flow of passages in common fluid communication with the outlet port (16) and in variable fluid communication with the inlet port (14). The first and second flow passages meet at first and second connecting points. The first connecting point is located in the proximity of the inlet port (14). The first flow passage has a higher resistance to fluid flow than the second flow passage. The assembly (10) also includes a valve means (24) generally located past the first connecting point inside the second flow passage for selectively proportionating exhaust gases passing through the passages. The first flow passage includes three or more conduits (26, 28, 30) being in fluid communication with each other.

Abstract: The present invention is for a triangular cross section symmetrical engine exhaust muffler for an internal combustion engine. Its internal design provides baffles symmetrically disposed about a plane centrally located equidistant from the ends of a tube having a triangular cross section. The design has three baffles spaced to minimize backpressure but angled to enhance acoustic reflections within the chamber formed by the tube having a triangular cross section, baffles, and the affixed endplates including the inlet/exhaust ports. These acoustic reflections serve to modify the sound emanating from the exhaust manifold or manifolds of the internal combustion engine. The muffler chamber also serves to smooth out the pulsating gas flow emanating from the engine as a result of the combustion cycle.

Abstract: A muffler for an engine in oilfield applications has a tube with nozzles in its inlet section for spraying a mist of water from the well into the exhaust gases produced by the engine, so that a significant portion of the water is converted to water vapor and exits with the exhaust gases at the outlet of the tube. Vortex generators on the interior surface of the midsection of the tube create turbulence in the exhaust gases and water mist. A sump at the outlet section of the tube collects the remaining water and pollutants trapped by the water for subsequent disposal.

Abstract: A muffling chamber (5) is located between a first main body wall (42A) and a second main body wall (42B) with respect to a height direction (AE). An outflow pipe (8) has: a first opening (8A) that connects an outflow passage (8R) with a muffling chamber (5) in the vicinity of a first main body wall (42A); and a second opening (8C) that connects the outflow passage (8R) with the muffling chamber (5) in the vicinity of a second main body wall (42B). The liquid staying on the first main body wall (42A) of a first muffler (4A) flows into the outflow passage (8R) through the first opening (8A). The liquid staying on a second main body wall (42B) of a second muffler (4B) flows into the outflow passage (8R) through a second opening (8C). Therefore, the symmetry of the first muffler (4A) and the second muffler (4B) is compatible with anti-corrosion.

Abstract: A marine muffler comprises an elongate cylindrical housing having an inlet and an outlet and defining an internal volume partitioned, by an angularly disposed internal baffle, into a lower chamber in communication with the inlet and an upper chamber in communication with the outlet. A vertically disposed duct is insertably secured to the baffle to allow exhaust gas and exhaust cooling water to flow from the lower inlet chamber to upper outlet chamber. The exhaust duct may preferably be further adapted with internal structure forming a plurality of individual flow conduits or passages. The duct is preferably positioned such that a plurality of flow passage inlets are positioned in proximity to the lower cylindrical housing wall, with flow passage outlets positioned in proximity to the upper housing wall. The lower duct wall may further be adapted with sidewall apertures for improving exhaust flow dynamics therethrough.

An internal passageway extends through the body in the axial direction. A resonator in the body fore portion includes a plurality of acoustic chambers. A plurality of ribs in the resonator form fore/aft walls of the acoustic chambers. Each rib is shaped substantially as a section of an annulus. A plurality of radial fins extend between adjacent ribs. The fins form sidewalls of the acoustic chambers. A skin overlies the acoustic chambers and forms an outer surface of the resonator.

Abstract: A component, such as an intake manifold or a throttle body, has an air passage. A structure may extend into the air passage so that the structure intersects a part of a total air-flow passing through the air passage. The structure may have a first through-hole and a second through-hole. Each of the through-holes define a cross-sectional area that may taper in a direction of air-flow that is passing through the air passage so that a cross-sectional area of an entrance of the respective through-hole is greater than a cross-sectional area of an exit of the respective through-hole. The structure helps attenuate acoustic noise that may occur in the component due to the air-flow.

Abstract: A low emissions 2-stroke natural gas fueled engine includes at least one cylinder with an exhaust port in communication with a silencer/catalytic converter unit. The unit has first and second volumes in communication with each other. The first volume dampens spurious exhaust pressure excursions and removes particulates in the exhaust. The second volume houses an oxidation catalyst for treating exhaust to reduce exhaust emissions. The engine oil has at most 10 ppm zinc content to reduce metal poisons contained in the exhaust prior to contact with the oxidation catalyst. The engine oil preferably has a very low ash content to minimize sulfur combustion components in the exhaust to reduce masking of the oxidation catalyst. The first volume preferably has a pressure relief valve set to relieve at a pressure greater than the maximum normal operating pressure of the engine to avoid excessive pressure excursions of the engine exhaust from damaging the oxidation catalyst.

  • Publication number: 20100065365
Abstract: An auto-sensing, automatic adjusting exhaust baffle; for reducing noise emissions produced by internal combustion engines, while improving overall engine performance, i.e., torque and horsepower. The design uses a spherical shape to evacuate spent exhaust gas, thus scavenging the surrounding exhaust gases to adjust the backpressure, while reducing the noise exiting the exhaust pipe at lower rpm's. The device uses a sphere with an internal bearing; sliding linearly on a shaft and said sphere and bearing being acted upon by exhaust gasses and a compression spring mounted axially over the diameter of the shaft. The purpose of this device is to reduce noise while improving tuning of the air/fuel intake system, by adjusting backpressure of the exhaust system. The lesser amount of exhaust pressure, the less the sphere moves, as in idle to just off of idle, this results in a quiet operational mode of the invention.
