Patent number: 7296670Abstract: A disconnect mechanism is provided which, upon a suitable trigger event, such as excess temperature causes a camming element 40 having a tapered head 52 to move under the urging of a compression spring 60 such that the tapered head 52 becomes trapped between a rotating element 32 and a support 42. This gives rise to frictional inter-engagement which prevents further rotation of the rotating element 32 and thereby locks the rotating machine against further rotation. This is turn causes the shear region to fail thereby drivingly disconnecting the machine from its prime mover.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2005Date of Patent: November 20, 2007Assignee: Goodrich Control Systems LimitedInventors: Darren Christopher Howard, Dennis Richard Hayward, Rodney Stuart Howard

Patent number: 5765668Abstract: A drop protection device for actuator devices of the type which are intended to raise and lower a load. The drop protection device includes a sleeve shaped member which, during normal operation of the actuator rotates along with a threaded spindle of the actuator. During rapid acceleration of the spindle, such as that experienced when the drive gear breaks down and the spindle rotates freely so as to cause the load to uncontrollably drop, the sleeve shaped member will, as a result of its mass inertia, be brought into contact with a stop device for preventing further rotation of the spindle. Thus, the drop protection device prevents the load from being damaged or causing damage to peripheral equipment or individuals.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 1996Date of Patent: June 16, 1998Assignee: SKF Specialty Products ABInventors: Par-Olof Hasselberg, Dag Arne Olofsson
