  • Patent number: 5885448
Abstract: A system for thermophilic aerobic destruction of pathogenic organisms and organic matter within waste water treatment sludge includes a tank for maintaining the sludge and an air transfer apparatus for injecting air into the sludge near the bottom thereof so as to bubble up through the sludge and react exothermically with the thermophilic microorganisms therein so as to kill or destroy the mesophilic microorganisms within the sludge. • Patent number: 5855782
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an arrangement for the elimination of substances by means of a membrane filter wherein the use is foreseen both in the blood cleaning procedures as well as in chemical and biotechnological separation techniques. The fluid containing the substances is run through the primary side of the membrane filter and the secondary side is flowed through by a adsorptive suspension which contains the substance binding particles. A pump drives the adsorptive suspension through the secondary side of membrane filter and causes in this way locally differentiable positive and negative transmembrane pressure differences whereby a local fluid exchange occurs and by means of which the active substances come into contact with the particles. Since the volume of the adsorptive suspension in the secondary circuit is held constant, the mean transmembrane pressure does not alter.

  • Patent number: 5772887
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a bioreactor system for the remediation of contaminated liquid streams. The bioreactor system is composed of at least one and often a series of sub-units referred to as bioreactor modules. The modular nature of the system allows bioreactor systems be subdivided into smaller units and transported to waste sites where they are combined to form bioreactor systems of any size. The bioreactor modules further comprises reactor fill materials in the bioreactor module that remove the contaminants from the contaminated stream. To ensure that the stream thoroughly contacts the reactor fill materials, each bioreactor module comprises means for directing the flow of the stream in a vertical direction and means for directing the flow of the stream in a horizontal direction. In a preferred embodiment, the reactor fill comprises a sulfate reducing bacteria which is particularly useful for precipitating metals from acid mine streams.

  • Patent number: 5536418
Abstract: An improved method for processing multiple small batches of waste material from different collection sites is provided. The method uses an apparatus designed to process small batches of waste material from a collection site, such as a septic tank, into waste water and sludge material. Using the apparatus, the waste material first undergoes oxidation with an oxidizing agent and separation with a flocculating agent. After the oxidizing and separating steps are completed, the waste water is then drained from the apparatus and returned to the collection site. The sludge material produced is then transported to a second collection site. The waste material from the second collection site is then added and mixed with the sludge material produced from the first small batch of waste material. The new waste material is then oxidized and separated into waste water and sludge material. The waste water is then drained from the apparatus and deposited into the collection site.

Each set of staggered partitions 21, 22 and 23 are arranged so that the bioreactors are interconnected in series, the effluent preferably being constrained to pass downwardly through each matrix 13, 14, 15 in turn against an upward discharge of very fine air bubbles from aeration panels 28 which extend under substantially the whole of each matrix. Aerobic bacteria feeds on nutrients in the effluent and grows on the roughened walls of the cross-flow matrix and the air bubbles promote sloughing of the bacteria.

Abstract: This invention pertains to a multi-stage separator vessel through which the to-be-cleaned fluid flows. Aeration assemblies within the inner cells disperse micro-fine gas bubbles into the fluid for cleaning purposes. Additionally, the inlet piping contains a separator that begins the separation process before this fluid is discharged into the first cell. An L-shaped passageway interconnects the various flotation cells of this separator with the entrance of each such passageway being at an elevation below its exit. A weir is located within each flotation cell that is adjustable as needed. This weir empties into a channel alongside the separator vessel that collects the separated contaminants flowing over the weir for later disposal.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for the simultaneous purification of air and water, using a plurality of compartments arranged in a series extending from a first to a last compartment. Each compartment is partially filled with a biologically active material. Air and water to be purified are introduced into the first compartment into a lower portion thereof. Each said compartment other than the last compartment has outlets for air and water adjacent an upper portion thereof communicating with conduits for conveying air and water to a lower portion of the next compartment in the series. Each compartment other than the last has a closed top such that air can leave only through the conduits and pass to a lower portion of the next compartment. The last compartment has outlets adjacent an upper portion thereof for purified air and water.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for recovering oil from an oil spill on the surface of a body of water. The method is operative for recovering an oil having a viscosity in excess of 80 centipoise and it includes the steps of drawing an oil-water mixture from the surface of a body of water, adjusting the viscosity of the oil in the oil-water mixture to a level below approximately 80 centipoise and passing the resultant adjusted oil-water mixture through an oil-water coalescer to separate the oil in the adjusted oil-water mixture from the water therein. The viscosity of the oil in the feed oil-water mixture is preferably adjusted by adding a low viscosity hydrophobic hydrocarbon solvent to the oil-water mixture.

  • Patent number: 5013429
Abstract: An apparatus and method for stabilizing sludge such as the sludge produced by municipal waste water treatment plants includes thickening of the sludge to a dry solid content in the range of 3% to 8% before feeding it to at least one comparatively small reactor tank that extends horizontally and has an inlet and outlet adjacent opposite end walls. The system preferably utilizes multiple tanks stacked one above the other and connected in series. The tanks have an in-built mixer that sweeps through the interior of the tank. The mixer is eccentrically mounted so that its mixing members carry the sludge through the uppermost portion of the tank interior and are spaced from the bottom surface of the tank. A sparger is located either in the inlet or in the bottom clearance of the tank to introduce microscopic bubbles of oxygen and ozone into the sludge. A pressure regulating valve controls the flow of the stabilize sludge from the uppermost reactor tank.

Abstract: A method for anaerobic biological waste treatment in multiple stages wherein a relatively high strength wastewater is introduced into a first biological reactor to produce an effluent of reduced strength, the effluent is passed into a second biological reactor for reaction therein, passage of the effluent into the second biological reactor is continued until the biological solids in the second reactor enter into a negative growth phase and become relatively stable, whereupon the flow of waste through the reactors is reversed by terminating introduction of the waste into the first reactor and passing the same into the second reactor to cause microorganisms in the second reactor to enter into a positive growth phase and the solids in the first reactor to enter into a negative growth phase.

  • Patent number: 4935130
Abstract: Known types of equipment for the biological denitrification of potable water require (back) washing of the reactors from time to time. These denitrification processes proceed therefore in a discontinuous manner. The invention proposes a continuously operating denitrification process with a simple equipment arrangement. This is achieved by submerged drum reactors (12, 14) which rotate in a first, anoxic biological stage (10) and in a second, aerobic biological stage (13). The immersion bodies (immersion body segments 31) contained in these reactors are, due to the rotation, continuously washed during the treatment of the potable water. Moreover, the submerged drum reactors (12, 14) of the two biological stages (10, 13) are arranged according to the invention on a common drive shaft (26) with a drive element (drive motor 27).
