Abstract: Stopper for an evacuated tube with an open end for collecting fluid such as blood samples. The stopper includes a plug adapted to be mounted in the opening in the tube so as to normally seal the tube. The plug permits access of a fluid sample needle therethrough into fluid communication with the reduced pressure interior of the tube so that fluid is collected in the tube from the needle. A check valve is on the plug to automatically open when the needle is inserted through the plug and subjected to the reduced pressure in the tube and to automatically close when subjected to a predetermined amount of pressure from within the tube such as that caused by backflow thereby preventing any fluid passing into the needle from the tube. The check valve includes a chamber which can be used as a reagent holder prior to the tube use.
Abstract: An injection site is provided which is molded inside out with inwardly extending rings. The rings have a smaller internal diameter than the external diameter of the tubular member to which the injection site is to be connected. The injection site has a central portion for receiving a needle therethrough, and a first, cylindrical portion which is extended into the tubular member. After such insertion, the portion with the attached rings is folded back onto the tubular member. The rings become positioned on the outside of the assembly and are in the compressed state squeezing tightly against the tubular member.

Abstract: The disclosure is of a novel closure for air evacuated tubular containers and comprises a tubular body having flexible, elastic sidewalls, an open end, a closed end formed by a cannula-pierceable, flexible, elastic end wall having a concavo-convex configuration in cross-section and a flange disposed radially about the periphery of the open end. The novel closure structure takes advantage of the vacuum force in the container to maintain a gas-proof, hermetic seal, reduces the thickness required of the closure to maintain the hermetic seal and is easier to assemble in an air evacuated container. The disclosure is also of a novel method of assembling the closure of the invention in an air evacuated tubular container.
Abstract: A sealing fixture in combination with a cap member provides a fluid-tight compression seal between an elastomeric septum and a tubular body. The septum is disposed transversely on a first end of the sealing fixture, which is of cylindrical configuration with an axial bore. A second end of the sealing fixture fits over the tubular body. The cap member covers the septum by being screwed down over a threaded portion of the outer wall of the sealing fixture. An aperture is provided in the cap member through which an injection device can be inserted to puncture the septum so as to deliver a quantity of fluid to, or to remove a quantity of fluid from, the tubular body via the bore in the sealing fixture. An outer wall portion of the sealing fixture adjacent the first end thereof is tapered inwardly to form a sharp junction with an inner wall portion of the sealing fixture. This inner wall portion adjacent the first end of the sealing fixture is parallel to the axis of the bore.
Abstract: Improved septa for chromatographic apparatus and procedures comprise disc or cylindrical bodies of silicone rubber with a coating of polyimide which may in turn be covered by a coating of Teflon.
Abstract: The closure is an improvement over that shown in our U.S. Pat. No. 3,592,351 in that the present closure is capable of accommodating a tap with non-coaxial gas and draw tubes which make the tap effective for use in series tapping systems.

Abstract: A cap is provided for telescoping over the puncturable seal of a medicament vial and particularly a unit dose medicament vial. The cap includes a center outwardly projecting tubular extension including outer end circumferentially spaced inwardly projecting abutments. A needle structure including a generally cylindrical body is slidingly received within the tubular extension of the cap and includes a diametrically reduced sharpened tubular needle extension on its inner end opposing and for piercing the puncturable seal of the associated vial upon movement of the needle structure inwardly of the tubular extension or mounting portion of the cap.
Abstract: A stopper which is particularly adaptable to be mounted in an evacuated tube, for example, of the type employed in fluid collection procedures such as the sampling of blood under vacuum. The stopper is designed with a central shaft and a membrane located intermediate the ends of the central shaft. A part of the shaft above the membrane is narrowed upwardly to facilitate retention of a drop of fluid such as blood displaced from the tip of a needle as it is removed from the stopper after the collection procedure.

Abstract: A stopper for use with an evacuated blood collecting and separating tube comprising a flange portion, a plug portion depending from the flange portion including a generally frustoconical lateral face and a flat annular bottom face, and a nose portion depending from an inner circumference of the plug bottom face. The nose portion includes a beveled or tapered section having an axial cavity extending through the nose portion into the plug portion. The axial cavity preferably includes a frustoconically shaped lateral face.
Abstract: An improved measuring chamber for use in an intravenous feeding set is defined by a rigid transparent plastic chamber and includes an injection site formed in a side wall of the chamber. With the injection site in this position, the tendency of dust to collect on the injection site is significantly reduced. Moreover, adding medication to the measuring chamber is easier because the attendant need not reach so high. Finally, if the injection site is located below the liquid level of parenteral fluid in the chamber, homogeneous mixing of the parenteral fluid and the medication added thereto can be accomplished by simply pumping the plunger of the hypodermic syringe used to add the medication to the chamber.
Abstract: The safety cap of the present invention is for use with a medicament vial having a puncturable seal. The cap includes a cylindrical extension provided with a shape-retentive but slightly expandable cylindrical body slidable therein having a diametrically reduced sharpened tubular needle extension on its inner end for piercing the seal. The body includes first and second portions of slightly different diameters, with the portion of smaller diameter outermost, and an inwardly tapering center portion, thus defining two shoulders for cooperating with an inwardly projecting lip on the outer end of the cylindrical extension to resiliently resist inward movement of the body and to prevent outward withdrawal of the body after it has been pressed inwardly to puncture the seal.
Abstract: Disclosed is a transfer unit for transferring a material within a container, the material being in either powdered or liquid form, to a second container having a diluent therein, to thereby form a solution. The unit includes a container for storing the material, a closure portion including a frangible diaphragm for sealing the container prior to use, the transfer member having dual channels therein, one for the transfer of material from the additive container to the second container, the other for passage of air into the second container. The unit is employed by inserting the transfer member through the closure in the second container, transferring the material within the container to the second container and thereafter removing the transfer unit. In the preferred embodiment, the closure portion and container is removable from the transfer member. The transfer member is therefore retained within the closure of the second container.
Abstract: A paint container comprising a clear plastic sidewall construction preferably of polypropolene enabling the accurate observation of the paint contained therein through the walls of the container. The closure member comprises a multi-laminate seal including prestressed films designed to enable a slit to be made in the seal surface permitting access to the paint while providing advantages set forth in detail herein.
Abstract: A flask having a threaded neck and a cap adapted for threaded engagement on the neck. A laminated disc between the cap and the neck forms a gas tight seal and the cap has a central opening that exposes a medial region of the disc. Piercing the disc through the opening are two electrodes, the inner ends of which contact the sample within the flask and the outer ends of which afford connection of test equipment thereto. Cylindric glass tubes are fitted over the external portion of the electrodes to provide physical support therefor; silicone rubber or the like serves to retain the glass cylinders in place and form a gas tight seal between the cylinders and the electrodes. Shrinkable tubing is shrunk over the glass tubes to afford further mechanical support and sealing. A final relatively large diameter shrinkable tube is shrunk over both electrodes and their associated glass cylinders.

Abstract: A fluid product reservoir to store a fluid product as for use in a pressurized spray system of the type concurrently discharging a gas and a spray product. The reservoir is leak-proof, economic to manufacture, and minimizes pressure fluctuations upon the dispensing of the fluid product. The reservoir provides a closed container having an open neck with interior walls defining an open throat. A plug is located in and closes the throat. An elastically penetrable insert is sealably located in a central opening of the plug. The method includes a method of storing a liquid product in a reservoir by providing a closed container having a neck portion defining an open throat. A plug is provided to close the open throat, and an elastically penetrable insert is provided in the plug. The method further includes a method of sealing the plug in the open throat.
