Abstract: Methods are presented for modifying a physical property of a structure, such as reducing or relieving remaining internal stress, in which two or more energy types are concurrently applied to the structure to change the physical property of interest in an accelerated fashion. A first energy type, such as heat, is applied according to time values and operational settings derived from a first order rate relationship for the first energy type and from a first order rate relationship for a second energy type. The second energy type, such as vibration or other time-varying energy form, is applied concurrently for the time value. Methods are also provided for determining operational settings for concurrent application of multiple energy types to a structure.

Abstract: A process for heating powder materials by microwave radiation so that heating and sintering or melting progressively and directionally occurs within the powder materials. The process generally entails forming a structure from a powder by arranging the powder in a mass according to size of particles of the powder so that the particles are progressively arranged within at least a region of the mass from smallest to largest. The mass is then subjected to microwave radiation so that the particles within the mass progressively couple with the microwave radiation according to size, the smallest particles coupling first and heating faster than larger particles of the powder, and the largest particles coupling last and heating slower than smaller particles of the powder. As a result of the progressive arrangement of the particles, the mass is progressively and directionally heated by the microwave radiation.

Abstract: An apparatus providing uniform microwave processing of products especially those that are likely to absorb microwave energy such as meat and the like. The apparatus uses at least a pair of complimentary processing waveguides. The waveguides are offset along at least one axis thereof so that the energy coupled to the product when traveling through a first waveguide section is presented with a complimentary or mirror image of the field variation applied to the product when traveling in the second waveguide. Energy may be fed to the elongated waveguides through a broad open wall or a wall having narrow openings. Coupling values can therefore be adjusted to transfer a higher percentage of energy in the feeder waveguide as microwaves propagate but then are diminished by a previous coupling section.
