  • Patent number: 5622274
Abstract: A closure is intended for use on a container having an opening defined by a rim portion and a finish including a ledge situated below the rim portion. The closure includes a central body portion sized to cover the container opening and a peripheral portion adapted to contact the rim portion of the container. A plurality of tabs are unitarily fixed to the peripheral portion, each tab including a tang adapted to engage the ledge of the container finish. Each tab also includes a thinned, stressed portion between the tang and the rim portion which is reactive to an application of heat to cause shortening of the tab length. The thinned portion also acts as a hinge to permit flexural displacement of the tab with respect to the body portion. The closure when applied to a container is completed by a band which encompasses the tabs, the band also being reactive to an application of heat to cause contraction of the band to insure continued engagement between the ledge and tangs.

The mechanism (45; 145, 150; 260) may bias the end cap (30) axially inwardly of the bore (12), bias a gripping ring member (145) radially outwardly into engagement with the body (22) of the master cylinder (20), and retain a first end (32) of the end cap (30) within the bore (12) in accordance with the extent to which the first end (32) is inserted axially into the bore (12).

  • Patent number: 5240133
Abstract: An article is disclosed comprising a lid engaged to a container by the formation of interlocking waves of lid material and container material at the junction of the lid and container. The interlocking waves are geometrically aligned relative to the interior of the container so as to maximize the burst strength of the container, and also to minimize the force required to peel the lid from the container. An unheated clamp head is used to clamp the lid structure immediately adjacent a heated seal head, the heated seal head being used to form the interlocking wave structure around the inside rim of the container. The clamp head prevents any melted portions of the container or lid from flowing to or towards the outside rim of the container, and thereby prevents the formation of similar interlocking waves about the outside rim of the container.

Abstract: A paint or similar can adapted to retain its lid in fluid tight condition against mechanical or pressure disturbances. The can has a ring element secured to the top of its sidewall and a lid assembled onto the ring element. Rubber or other sealant is disposed between the ring element and lid to form one or more continuous seals between the ring element and lid. An overcap having a debossment is placed over the lid. Filament reinforced low stretch adhesive tape is adherently applied to the overcap and the sidewall and hold the overcap down tightly against the lid with the debossment pressing against the lid to prevent the lid from backing off from the ring element and breaking the seal.

  • Patent number: 5160054
Abstract: A vent system adapted to be installed on a standard container, in place of a shipping and storage plug, for use in venting the container without requiring any modification to the container. The vent system includes a knob which is turnable in one direction to place the vent system in a vent closed condition, as for example for shipping the container, and turnable in the opposite direction to place the vent system in a vent open condition to permit air to be vented into the container during fluid removal. A vent housing is adapted to be screwed into a threaded opening of the container. The knob includes a cap and a ring which are held together by a tamper evident seal. The knob is captured by the vent housing to prevent unwanted removal of the knob and to prevent unwanted access to the container. The tamper evident seal must be removed for access to the vent housing and for removal of the vent system from the container.

  • Patent number: 5094044
Abstract: An improved dome structure on a base is disclosed comprising, in the preferred embodiment, of a membrane sandwiched between layers of rigidifying material such as shotcrete or reinforced composite which also serve to embed radial wires and circumferential tensioned prestressing. Various types of circumferential tensioned prestressing can be applied to minimize bursting stresses and can consist of steel wire as well as fiber or steel-reinforced tape. Further layers of rigidifying material can then be applied over the circumferential prestressing as a final protection and cover. The radial wires can contain spacers or hooks to preclude the circumferential prestressing from riding up on the structure. The lower portion of the dome can include a reverse curvature to minimize stresses and stabilize the structure. The rigidifying material may be composite which can be hardened by light curing. A second outer membrane can also be used for weather protection.
