The end closure has an outer circumferential surface which is coextensive, that is flush, with the adjacent circumferential surface of the pressure vessel casing. At least a portion of the pressure vessel casing and closure are encapsulated by a seamless tubular sleeve of heat or air-shrinkable material which covers the entire extent of the external joint and is heat or air-shrunk about the vessel to seal the external joint. There is a layer of sealant in the form of an adhesive or a mastic, between the shrunk sleeve and the vessel.

In order that a bridge rupturing pressure may be applied to the tamper-evident band, there is provided a separate lock ring of a size to engage beneath the transfer bead while having an outer portion overlying the tamper-evident band to transfer pressure thereto during the removal of the closure cap. The lock ring is radially expansible to freely pass down over the threads and transfer beads during the application of the closure cap.

A pressure indicator and relief assembly, contained in a pressure release opening through the cover, indicates positive pressure in the chamber and is ejected in the event of an abnormally high pressure inside the housing.

    Abstract: Closure apparatus for a high pressure vessel includes a closure member having a hemispherically concave interior and a stepped cylindrical exterior portion. The stepped cylindrical exterior portion is adapted to complement the cross-sectional shape of flanged sector blocks so that the sector blocks are lockingly engaged in a circumferential groove in an access opening of the high pressure vessel when the closure member is installed, thereby eliminating any requirement for a wedge ring support for the blocks. The present closure apparatus may be retrofitted into high pressure vessels already equipped with a much heavier flat plate closure. The present closure apparatus may be of the partial access type, an elliptical manway being provided in the closure member. Access through the manway allows periodic maintenance of the vessel interior without having to remove the heavy closure member.

A container having a cylindrical top has a plastic bag affixed over the top so that the body of the bag extends above the container. The stopper is then removed by grasping it from outside of the bag and dropping it into the container. Gross blood, serum, other body fluids or any aerosol of blood or body fluids caused by rushing in of air into the evacuated space is captured within the plastic bag. This reduces contamination of the laboratory environment and augments the use of gloves, masks and goggles.

    Abstract: An extension collar for a container tray or box which can be readily fitted onto the container and afford varying height extensions for the container. Lock elements in contact with the bonnet fit into an annular groove in the body. Pressure sensing vents or bolts are preferably used to prevent opening of the valve when there is pressure in the valve body. The pressure sensing bolts holding retaining plates in place include a hollow bore which is sealed when the bolt is fully seated but is exposed when the bolt is rotated a small number of times to indicate and bleed off pressure within the valve.

    Abstract: A method and device for heat sealing thermoplastic materials is disclosed. A pair of flat resistance wires are encased within a plastic sheath and arranged in parallel with their flat surfaces lying in one plane. The wires are spaced from each other in a manner designed for maximum thermal emission. To weld together two thermoplastic materials, the sheathed wires are held between and in firm contact with the materials to be joined. A predetermined electric current is passed through the wires until enough heat has been generated to weld the materials together. The invention may also be applied to a process for heat sealing plastic lids to plastic drums. In particular, the sheathed wires are fastened to the lower surface of a thermoplastic drum lid. The lid, together with the resistance wires is clamped to a thermoplastic drum with a standard drum clamp. An electric current is passed through the wires for a period of time sufficient to heat up the wires and weld the lid to the drum.

In the formation of the fitment thread elements, openings are formed in a lower flange of the fitment through which tiny insects and foreign matter may enter into the space between the closure skirt and the fitment. These openings are sealed by fin segments or flaps molded in one piece with the fitment and being swingable to underlie the fitment flange in sealed relation in alignment with the openings.
