  • Patent number: 9383143
Abstract: Diffusion bonding a stack of aluminum thin films is particularly challenging due to a stable aluminum oxide coating that rapidly forms on the aluminum thin films when they are exposed to atmosphere and the relatively low meting temperature of aluminum. By plating the individual aluminum thin films with a metal that does not rapidly form a stable oxide coating, the individual aluminum thin films may be readily diffusion bonded together using heat and pressure. The resulting diffusion bonded structure can be an alloy of choice through the use of a carefully selected base and plating metals. The aluminum thin films may also be etched with distinct patterns that form a microfluidic fluid flow path through the stack of aluminum thin films when diffusion bonded together.

  • Patent number: 7051917
Abstract: Preparation of a weld between a structural I-beam end and a beam-to-column attaching end component wherein no beam flange material is removed to participate in the creation of a weld trough. Instead, the space for a weld trough is created in the end component, and this trough is prepared with enough all-over length to establish run-on and run-off regions for molten weld material, which regions extend laterally outwardly from the opposite transverse ends of a flange. Full-section welds between a beam's flanges and the attaching end component are achieved without the need to use any run-on and run-off tabs, and also without the need to employ any traditionally-used backing bars.

  • Patent number: 6984358
Abstract: A method for producing diffusion bonds between components formed of tungsten heavy alloy (WHA) uses aid material to accelerate diffusion across the joint surfaces. The aid material consists of an alloy of palladium (Pd) with one or more of the secondary elements of nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), or cobalt (Co). The secondary elements are selected to correspond to the secondary elements present in the components. The diffusion bonding is carried out by placing diffusion aid material between the joint surfaces of adjacent components, applying a pressure across the joint surfaces, and processing the assembly through a thermal profile. Structures of WHA with complex shapes, interior volumes and/or large sizes can be formed. The joint properties are equal to or superior to those of the parent material of the components.

  • Patent number: 6892931
Abstract: A method facilitates replacing a portion of a gas turbine engine turbine support. The turbine support includes a body including a forward leg, an aft leg, and a mounting flange that each extend radially outwardly from the body. The forward leg is axially upstream from the aft leg and the mounting flange. The mounting flange is substantially axially aligned with respect to the aft leg. The method comprises cutting through at least one of the body, the aft leg, and the mounting flange, removing the forward leg and at least a portion of the body that is upstream from the cut from the engine, and coupling a replacement spad to the portion of the turbine support that is downstream from the cut.

  • Patent number: 6880744
Abstract: In a method of applying a brazing material to braze a joining portion between a first member and a second member, a relationship between an amount of the brazing material and an expanding dimension of the brazing material is determined. Then, a position to apply the brazing material or a necessary amount of the brazing material is decided based on the relationship. After the first member and the second member are joined, the brazing material is applied. The position is defined by a distance from the joining portion. The distance is set smaller than one-half the expanding dimension of the brazing material on an applying surface.

  • Patent number: 6609650
Abstract: A process is disclosed for brazing plate/plate and plate/fin multi-channeled structures using an amorphous brazing foil as a brazing filler metal between the parts in order to form uniform joints having optimal dimensions, shape and strength. The parts are assembled in an unconstrained stack, and a controlled load is applied to the top of the stack. The stack is then heated to a temperature at which the interlayer melts and reacts with the base metal to form the joints. The stack is cooled resulting in a brazed structure having the desired characteristics, wherein the brazed joints are optimally formed and the strength of the structure is equal to the underlying strength of the base metal.
