Patent number: 4209124Abstract: A method for assembling rock bit sections in preparation for welding in a manner to assure dimensional integrity. Involved in the method is the use of a clamping fixture that has locator dowels and dowel holes on a base. These locator means are used in combination with a fixed position ring gage, determining the selected diameter of the assembled rock bit, to establish accurate alignment of the sections for clamping and welding. The fixed ring gage and locator means accurately position the sections relative to each other to minimize pre-assembly slippage between the sections.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1978Date of Patent: June 24, 1980Assignee: Hughes Tool CompanyInventors: George W. Patent number: 4209684Abstract: A high energy electron or laser beam is preferably used to assemble a drill bit. Bit segments are integrally adjoined together to form the drill bit assembly. Abutting confronting faces of the adjoining bit segments are aligned parallel to the drill bit axis and are fused together. The parallel alignment significantly simplifies the beam fusion process. The gage of the gage cutting elements of the bit segments is adjusted independently of the process involving assembly of the bit segments. Metal in a leg portion of the bit segments is fused in a zone of predetermined configuration to adjust the gage of the gage cutting elements. The zone of fused metal applies thermal contraction to the leg portion or permanently sets or relieves induced strain forces in the leg portion to permanently deflect the leg portion to a desired position at which the proper gage is obtained.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1979Date of Patent: June 24, 1980Inventor: Robert F. Patent number: 4188700Abstract: The cylindrical rotating grate of an attrition mill is constructed by welding a group of bars in close spaced parallel relationship, and then rolling this assembly into a cylindrical configuration. The meeting ends of this configuration are then welded, and an opening is preferably cut from the rolled assembly. The area cut out in the process of forming the opening is used as a cover. The grate structure includes solid abutments interengageable with the cover to hold the cover in position against the large forces encountered during the operation of the mill, with relatively light securing means adapted to hold the cover in engagement with these abutments. A housing surrounding the rotating grate is provided with an opening through which the machine is charged with material, and this opening is covered by a curtain preferably provided with battens and a weight to hold it in position. A vacuum is applied to the interior housing for the removal of dust, which assists in holding the curtain in position.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 1978Date of Patent: February 19, 1980Inventor: Richard Rymer

Patent number: 4156488Abstract: A cross support assembly is provided which is useful, for example, in earthworking equipment. Such an assembly can be mounted to extend between two lateral supports. A bracket extends laterally from the assembly and can serve as a supportive pivot for a bucket or the like. The assembly is generally hollow and acts as a torsion member. A bulkhead is welded in the cross support assembly and is positioned to directly receive forces exerted on the bracket. Usually the bracket and bulkhead are of unitary construction. The bulkhead extends within a generally tubular cross-member which also forms a part of the assembly and is attached between the lateral supports and into contact with the interior of the tubular member. Forces exerted on the assembly are thus generally compressively applied to the bulkhead welds adding to the overall strength of the assembly.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1977Date of Patent: May 29, 1979Assignee: Caterpillar Tractor Co.Inventor: Sheldon L.
