Abstract: A device for comminuting feedstock with a rotor which is disposed within a housing and rotates about an axis of rotation and is equipped over its circumference with comminuting tools. A ring disc is attached to front sides of the rotor in each case concentrically to the axis of rotation. The removal of the sufficiently comminuted material occurs via a screen deck extending over part of the rotor circumference. On axial front sides of the screen deck an arcuate sealing element following the outer circumference of the ring disc is disposed in each case, the element which to form a sealing gap in the plane of the ring disc lies radially opposite to the disc. Abstract: An improved mechanical fractionation system (20) for processing of xanthophyll-containing vegetative crops and the like to yield economically valuable end products, and particularly a relatively xanthophyll rich high protein, essentially friable when dry particulate fraction primarily derived from non-vascular plant leaf or petal tissue, and a separate tougher, particulate fibrous fraction derived principally from plant stem and the leaf vascular xylem and phloem network. The system (20) preferably includes a drying assembly (22) for partially drying the vegetative crop to a moisture content of from about 15-30% by weight, a fractionating hammermill (24) serving to separate the partially dried crop into a high protein xanthophyll-containing fraction and a high fiber fraction, respectively, and an individual, downstream high protein and high fiber fraction processing assemblies (26, 28).

  • Patent number: 5284514
Abstract: The invention concerns an apparatus and process for making foods coated in bread crumbs. The apparatus has a crumbing apparatus for converting loaves, of bread into breadcrumbs; a coating location whereto fresh crumbs are delivered from the crumbing apparatus; and a conveyor for transporting substrate food to the coating location for coating with the crumbs and for transporting coated food away from the coating location. The process involves the steps of obtaining baked and staled bread; inserting the bread into an apparatus which converts the bread into crumbs and substantially immediately coats the crumbs onto a substrate food. For conversion into crumbs, bread is supported on rods over a rotating drum having teeth which project between the rods to engage the bread. Thus bread too moist for grinding can be crumbed.

  • Patent number: 5150844
Abstract: Multiple size-reducing actions of heavy solid waste are carried out during each unidirectional rotation of a ballast-weighted drum rotor means having impact-cutter bar means projecting in fixed position about its drum surface. Feedstock contacts the rotating rotor means and is propelled against an anvil surface. Frangible materials are split and/or otherwise fragmented during such initial stage. Continued rotation cuts or crushes larger feedstock product with maximum dimensional aspects determined in part by the radial projection of the impact-cutter bar means as the latter move into a zone defined by a grate partially circumscribing the rotor means. Intermediate product in the space between the rotor drum and the grate passes through apertures in the grate or is driven into and sheared at such apertures which determines maximum cross-sectional dimensions of size-reduced product. The configuration of such grate apertures facilitates shearing of intermediate product.

  • Patent number: 4848919
Abstract: A pinned mill for a mixer having a mixing mechanism has a motor outside the mixer container and a rotor inside the container and spaced apart from its walls. The rotor is rotationally drivable by the motor and is at least partly surrounded at a tangent by a stator having pins arranged concentrically with the rotor axis, the rotor being arranged inside the pins. The rotor is provided with elements defining a grinding gap with respect to the pins. In order to improved the grind performance without notably increasing the drive power, the rotor elements defining the grinding gap with respect to the stator pins are embodied only by vanes extending approximately radially to the rotor axis. The radially outer ends of the vanes have a cutting edge. The stator pins have an edge associated with the radially outer vane edges. The rotor is also embodied as substantialy open, inside the stator.
