Patent number: 6607622Abstract: A method for adhering/bonding a frame profile (e.g., weather strip, water seal, spacer, etc.) to a substrate (e.g., glass or plastic substrate) in the context of a vehicle window unit. A frame profile is formed via extrusion so as to include both a polymer profile portion and a selectively activatable interface or adhesive portion. Following extrusion, the frame profile may be stored, cut, trimmed, cure, etc. At some point following extrusion, the interface/adhesive is in a non-activated state, or at least in a state where it is not activated to an extent sufficient to bond/adhere the frame to the substrate. To adhere/bond the frame profile to the substrate, the interface/adhesive portion of the frame profile is activated (e.g., heat activated). Following and/or during heat activation, the frame profile is pressed against the substrate, or vice versa, so that the activated adhesive bonds the polymer profile to the substrate.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 2001Date of Patent: August 19, 2003Assignee: Centre Luxembourgeois de Recherches pour le Verre et la Ceramique S.A. Patent number: 6599446Abstract: Inclusion of relatively small amounts of organic ionic species, such as calcium stearate, in the preparation of an electrically conductive polymer composite composition provides a composition having enhanced electrical properties relative to the composite composition lacking the added organic ionic species. As a result of this enhancement, normally insulating materials which rely upon a conductive filler to render them electrically conductive, can be made to achieve a given level of conductivity using less of the conductive filler than would otherwise be required. As a result, the adverse effects of the conductive filler on the polymer's physical properties can be minimized while maintaining a high level of electrical conductivity.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 2000Date of Patent: July 29, 2003Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Michael Leslie Todt, David Ernest Rodrigues, Sai-Pei Ting

Patent number: 6294119Abstract: A pneumatic tire includes a low conductive rubber portion forming at least a cap rubber portion of the tread rubber which provides a tread surface of the tire. A narrow high conductive rubber strip extends in a radial direction of the tire at a widthwise center region of the cap rubber portion, and is exposed to the tread surface to form a discharge path for allowing electrostatic charges of a vehicle body to be discharged to a road surface. An unvulcanized tread rubber for the tire is obtained by passing a high conductive unvulcanized rubber through a passage extending from an extruder unit to the back side of an extrusion orifice, to form at least part of the remaining potion of the tread rubber.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1998Date of Patent: September 25, 2001Assignee: Bridgestone CorporationInventor: Yoshinori Nakamura

Patent number: 6245271Abstract: Process for die extrusion of melted polymers that reduces die lip buildup and its deleterious effects. Direct extrusion of mixed polymer pellets and filler concentrate pellets in one embodiment avoids a precompounding step and reduces the tendency of polymer and filler particles to adhere to the exit portion of the die. In other embodiments a reduced die lip radius and lower melt processing temperatures further enhance the benefits obtained. For co-extruded muitilayer film embodiments elimination of fillers and antiblock additives in skin layers add to the levels of die lip buildup reduction obtained. Hours of continuous operation without excessive die lip buildup in one arrangement have been increased from a level of 4 to 6 hours, for example, to in excess of 20 hours. Reduced product defect levels have also been attained.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 1999Date of Patent: June 12, 2001Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Rob Lee Jacobs, Billy Ray Jones, Jr., Steven Edward Knothe, Daniel Kenneth Schiffer

Patent number: 6238607Abstract: A method of producing highly oriented multilayer films comprising laminating films having at least one layer of a fluoropolymer, at least one layer of a polyolefin homopolymer or copolymer and an intermediate adhesive layer of a polyolefin having at least one functional moiety of an unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof. With this structure the polyolefin layer allows the fluoropolymer layer to be stretched up to ten times its original length. Such a high orientation ratio for the fluoropolymer film increases the mechanical strength, toughness, and water vapor barrier properties of the film while using a thinner gauge fluoropolymer film.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1998Date of Patent: May 29, 2001Assignee: AlliedSignal Inc.Inventors: Mingliang Lawrence Tsai, Yash Pal Khanna, Joseph Edgar Mackey
