Abstract: An adjustable shim comprises a stack of plies comprising plastics material reinforced with a three-dimensional fibre layer, the plastics material being flowable under compressive force prior to cure for adjusting the thickness of the shim. The shim may be used to fill a void between two structural components joined together. Also, a method of filling a void between two structural components using the shim. The shim is easy to handle, can easily be laid up to a variety of thicknesses, and is quick to cure (depending on the plastics material used). The three-dimensional fibre layers make the shim highly compressible prior to cure, and provide significant reinforcement to the plastics material of the plies to support compressive stresses in the shim post cure.

Abstract: A method of fabricating and using a honeycomb core structure for aircrafts. The honeycomb core structure may comprise a septum positioned within and integral to a honeycomb core. The method may comprise sandwiching the septum between two sections of a die. Each section of the die may comprise a plurality of spaced apart columns, each having a hexagonal cross-section. The method may further comprise injecting melted thermoplastic throughout both sections of the die between the columns and cooling the thermoplastic, thereby hardening and integrating the thermoplastic and the septum together to form the honeycomb core structure. The method may also comprise affixing the honeycomb core structure within an aircraft structure to provide a structural load path for a primary component of the aircraft.

Abstract: A micro-electrode array is described comprising an insulating substrate and a plurality of conductive paths defined therein, each of which includes an electrode area with microscopic dimensions, a connection area with macroscopic dimensions, and a buried interconnection region, wherein the insulating substrate is made of a first polymeric material, such as PDMS, and the conductive paths are made of a second polymeric material, such as PEDOT. Furthermore, a method of manufacturing such micro-electrode array is described, based on the configuration of an insulating substrate volume by replica molding on the first polymeric material through a prearranged master mould, bearing a configuration of microstructures adapted to define a plurality of cavities; successively filling the cavities with a second conductive polymeric material so as to constitute the electrode areas, the connection areas, and the interconnection regions; and arranging an insulating material sealing layer for the filled cavities.
