  • Patent number: 6635209
Abstract: An improved encapsulation method is proposed for the encapsulation of a substrate-based package assembly, which can help to prevent mold flash over exposed package surfaces after encapsulation process is completed. The proposed encapsulation method is characterized by the forming of a cutaway portion in a solder mask over the substrate along a seam line between the solder mask and the molding tool that would exist between the solder mask and the molding tool when the semi-finished package assembly is fixed in position in the molding tool. During encapsulation process, the cutaway portion defines a constricted flow passage to the injected encapsulation material; and consequently, when the encapsulation material flows into this constricted flow passage, it would more quickly absorb the heat in the molding tool, thereby increasing its viscosity and retarding its flow speed.

Abstract: A process for producing a composite molded article is described. The composite molded article includes: (i) at least one base body (1) having a contoured surface; (ii) at least one first thermoplastic part (4, 5, 6); and (iii) at least one second thermoplastic part (2, 3), each of the first and second thermoplastic parts being joined to the base body. The process includes, (a) providing a multicomponent injection molding tool (20) having at least two separate melt flow-way systems and at least two cavities in which each of the first and second thermoplastic parts are separately formed, each of the cavities are in separate communication with each of the separate melt flow-way systems. The base body is placed into the molding tool in a second step (b). The cavities of the mold are separated from each other by a combination of the contoured surface of the base body and sealing edges of the molding tool that abut the contoured surface of the base body.

Abstract: A wiper blade is proposed that is used to clean windows of motor vehicles. The wiper blade (10) has an elongated, rubber-elastic wiper strip (14), which is retained, substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis, on a support element (30) that has a spring-elastic retaining rail (12) elongated in bandlike fashion and a connection device (16) disposed on the retaining rail, in which the connection device (16) is disposed on the band face (32), remote from the window, on the middle portion of the retaining rail (12) and serves to connect the wiper blade (10) to a driven wiper arm that can be stressed toward the window. Advantages in terms of both production and use are obtained if the connection device (16), made from a plastic, is formed directly and immovably onto the retaining rail.

  • Patent number: 6416610
Abstract: A footwear construction and method for manufacturing the same. The sole include a rigid flexplate suspended within the midsole. The flexplate extends along substantially the entire length and width of the sole. The sole also preferably includes a rear stabilizer molded in place about the heel region of the midsole. Further, the footwear may include a dual-density collar disposed about the ankle region of the upper. The collar includes a relatively soft inner layer that permits the collar to be stitched to the upper and a relatively rigid outer layer that provides the desired level of stability. The sole is preferably manufactured using the general steps of (a) providing a mold with a plurality of flexplate locating pins, (b) positioning a flexplate within the mold, (c) injecting the midsole material into the mold about the flexplate, and (d) attaching an outsole to the midsole. The rear stabilizer is preferably molded prior to and retained within the mold during the midsole molding step.

  • Patent number: 6403195
Abstract: A composite material includes five distinct layers of material: two thin outer layers or panels, a central rigid core and intermediate foam layers on both sides of the core which fill the regions between the core and outer panels. The core can be a wide variety of material but is preferably a rigid foam or wood having resin or epoxy impregnated fiber or fiber filled outer skins. An array of apertures extends through the core. During the fabrication process, the apertures facilitate cross flow of the foam and ensure even distribution thereof. As a finished product, the foam filled apertures ensure positive location and retention of the core within the foam. The foam may be any suitable injectable foam but is preferably a composition which remains resilient upon curing as such foam more readily accommodates dimensional changes between the layers due to, for example, ambient temperatures changes.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for making a composite article that includes a soft trim component employs a pair of mold halves, wherein a suitable skin material is sprayed onto a first mold cavity surface to obtain an in-mold coating, and a substrate is positioned between the mold halves such that a first area of one side of the substrate is located in opposition with the in-mold coating. A sprue defined in the second mold half, in opposition with the other side of the substrate, directs injected foam through an aperture in the substrate and into a gap defined between the one side of the substrate and the in-mold coating. A portion of the first mold half includes a layer of a sealing material that is harder than the substrate material to thereby eliminate the need to otherwise trim the overmolded soft trim component upon release from the mold.

Abstract: A method for forming a fitting at an end of a braid-reinforced silicone tube. A short length of the outer layer surrounding the braiding is removed and the exposed braiding is folded back over a first silicone ring and then a second silicone ring is placed over the folded-over braiding. The end of the tube is then placed in a mold which is then filled with liquid silicone. After the silicone is heated and cured, a unitary structure of tube and fitting results. Since the braiding is part of the unitary structure, it cannot be pulled out, thereby increasing the reliability of tube and fitting.

Abstract: A container assembly includes a container body formed of a thermoplastic material having an inner surface, an outer surface, and at least one corner having a reinforcement molded to the outer surface of the corner. The reinforcement has a peripheral edge, which is partially embedded in the outer surface of the container body. A method of making a container assembly comprises the step of molding a container body over a portion of a reinforcement. A reinforcement having a peripheral edge is disposed in a mold. A fluid thermoplastic material is disposed into the mold. The thermoplastic material is then molded over the inner surface of the mold and the peripheral edge of the reinforcement thereby forming the container body. The thermoplastic material contacts the peripheral edge and melts or softens the edge. A peripheral edge is then brought into engagement with the container body to provide a secure seal between the reinforcement and the container body.
