Abstract: An intumescent strip for fire protecting cellular beams is disclosed. The intumescent strips of the present invention are made from flexible intumescent compositions and retain their flexibility after being molded into a solid. The strips are often generally U-shaped to fit over the edge of an opening in a cellular beam. The intumescent strip may be adhered to the beam with an adhesive and the entire beam including the strips may be covered with a thin film intumescent coating.

  • Patent number: 7517487
Abstract: The invention relates to mold-release agents, in particular mold-release agents which can be used for demolding moldings from molding tools, and also to the use of these mold-release agents. The mold-release agents of the invention, which are preferably based on suspensions of nanostructured microparticles, have the advantage of being markedly more environmentally compatible than the known mold-release agents based on organic or organosilicon compounds, since they can remain on the surfaces of the moldings. The use of the mold-release agents of the invention is very simple, since advantage can be taken of existing equipment. An example of a usual method is to produce injection moldings by means of injection molds into which the material is injected. The mold-release agent of the invention is applied, e.g. by spray-application, to the injection mold prior to the actual injection-molding process.

A first opening of the mold is placed upon a surface, and a plug is positioned on the surface within the first opening. Through another opening foam is poured around the plug. After the foam has hardened, the mold is removed from the surface. All other openings in the mold are securely covered. Then an elastomer is introduced into the mold, and the mold is rotated about multiple different axes. The introduction of the elastomer is repeated after the prior coating created by the introduced elastomer has become tacky but before the prior coating has become firm. After the final coating of elastomer has become tacky but not firm, foam is introduced into the mold.

Abstract: A method for facilitating the fabrication of a hard cover for an article is provided. The method includes positioning shrinkable material over at least a portion of the article and shrinking the shrinkable material to form a fitted cover for the portion of the article. A layer of molding material is applied overlying the fitted cover to form a hard cover for the portion of the article. A method for facilitating fabrication of a first article from a second article is also provide. The method includes positioning shrinkable material over at least a portion of the second article and shrinking the shrinkable material to form a fitted cover for the portion of the second article. A first layer of molding material is applied overlying the fitted cover to form a mold. The mold has a surface which is a negative impression of at least a portion of the fitted cover. The mold is removed from the fitted cover and a second layer of molding material is applied overlying the surface of the mold to form the first article.

  • Patent number: 6863850
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a foamed plastic article includes disposing a release film on a mold surface of a mold cavity. At least a portion of a bushing is inserted through the release film to form an aperture in the release film. The bushing defines an inlet for foamable material. The mold cavity is then sealed. The foamable material is then injected into the mold cavity through the inlet, wherein the foamable material is conformed to the shape of the mold cavity.

  • Patent number: 6852266
Abstract: A method and apparatus for ultrasonic assisted deposition of a release agent onto a workpiece is disclosed. The release agent can be any fluorinated or non-fluorinated phosphorous-containing organic acid. The workpiece can be any workpiece desired to be coated with the release agent, such as a surface needing an anti-stick coating required in a plastic casting or injection mold. Metal oxide workpiece surfaces strongly bond to fluorinated phosphorus-containing organic acids. In particular, the present invention can deposit anti-stick coatings onto smooth or porous surfaces, such as anodized aluminum and its alloys, using ultrasonic assisted deposition.

  • Publication number: 20040256764
Abstract: The present invention provides a method to reduce adhesion between a conformable region on a substrate and a pattern of a mold, which selectively comes into contact with the conformable region. The method features forming a conformable material on the substrate and contacting the conformable material with the surface. A conditioned layer is formed from the conformable material. The conditioned layer has first and second sub-portions, with the first sub-portion being solidified and the second sub-portion having a first affinity for the surface and a second affinity for the first sub-portion. The first affinity is greater than the second affinity. In this fashion, upon separation of the mold from the conditioned layer, a subset of the second sub-portion maintains contact with the mold, thereby reducing the probability that a pattern formed in the conditioned layer becomes compromised. These and other embodiments are described herein.

Abstract: The method involves making a hollow blow molded thermoplastic article having an integral handle. An unblown preform of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is inserted into a blow mold and thereafter stretched by a stretch rod. Blow gas is then injected into the interior of the preform when the blow mold is closed and the preform is at a stretch temperature. After the preform is blown into the shape of the bottle in the mold, blow gas is discharged from the stretch rod onto an interior wall surface where the handle is to be formed. Heated movable mold segments are then advanced within the blow mold from a first retracted position to a second position thereby compressing an interior wall surface of the article into contact with a facing interior wall surface of the bottle to bond the surfaces at an elevated temperature and form an integral handle extending from the exterior wall of the blow molded article.
