Multiple Sealing Faces (e.g., Double Seals, Etc.) Patents (Class 277/361)
  • Patent number: 11913465
Abstract: A seal assembly for a pump comprises a gland housing mounted to the pump casing. A staging flow pathway is defined within the gland housing with multiple seal chambers. A seal stage is positioned in each seal chamber, each having a static sealing element and a rotating sealing element, the sealing elements engaging one another to form a fluid-tight seal. A rotor assembly pumps coolant through the gland housing. Fluid passing through the staging flow pathway is accelerated by an acceleration surface of the rotor assembly. An inlet passage feeds coolant fluid into the staging flow pathway and past the acceleration surface.

  • Patent number: 11459956
Abstract: A face seal arrangement includes a seal seat rotating with the shaft and a non-rotating face seal including a sealing ring. The sealing ring includes a sealing face biased into contact with the seal seat. The sealing ring also has a groove defined remote from the seal face relative to the seal seat. The groove provides a pressure face that will be exposed to high pressure air outward of the bearing compartment. A coil spring biases the seal housing towards the seal seat, such that the sealing face of the sealing ring is biased into contact with seal seat by air pressure against the pressure face, and the coil spring. A balance ratio is defined between an area of the pressure face and an area of the sealing face, the balance ratio is between 0.5 and 0.64.

Abstract: A leaf seal effects a seal between two, coaxial, relatively rotating components. The leaf seal has an annular pack of stacked leaves or a plurality of axially arranged annular packs of stacked leaves. The or each pack is mountable to one of the components with its leaves extending towards the other component such that the leaf edges of the pack are presented for wiping contact with the other component. The leaf seal further has upstream and downstream coverplates at the respective axial ends of the seal. Each coverplate is spaced from the adjacent annular pack by a respective axial gap. When viewed in the axial direction, each coverplate covers at least a portion of the radial extent of the adjacent pack. The upstream and/or the downstream coverplate is flexible to axially deflect under differential pressures which the seal experiences in operation.

  • Patent number: 8388328
Abstract: In an inner wall surface of a casing, grooves are formed that correspond to end faces of an outer rotor and an inner rotor, and seal members are disposed within the grooves, the seal members presses against the end faces of the outer rotor and the inner rotor. Inclined portions are provided in sealing portions of resin members of seal members, the sealing portions covering a closed portion. With this configuration, an internal pressure in the closed portion causes the inclined portions to separate from an outer rotor and an inner rotor when a brake fluid pressure within the closed portion increases to the point that the brake fluid is excessively compressed, releasing the brake fluid that is inside the closed portion. It is therefore possible to prevent the brake fluid pressure from increasing excessively within the closed portion.

Abstract: An intershaft seal system capable of communicating a balanced pressure profile onto forward and aft faces along a piston ring is presented. Seal system includes forward and aft mating rings and a piston ring. Mating rings include a plurality of divergent flow grooves adjacent to the piston ring. Each divergent flow groove includes a pair of grooves which intersect at and are substantially symmetric about an apex. The piston ring includes channels which direct a fluid from a high pressure region upward, downward, or directly through the piston ring and onto the divergent flow grooves. The divergent flow grooves separate the fluid in a symmetrically divergent fashion prior to communication onto the piston ring. The divergent flow grooves communicate a substantially symmetric pressure force along the radial width of the piston ring so as to minimize twisting thereof, thus reducing wear along the piston ring and increasing seal life.
