Abstract: A gasket for sealing an intake manifold of an internal combustion engine, includes a plastic body defining substantially co-planar surfaces that define top and bottom surfaces of the gasket. Each of a plurality of air intake apertures includes an interiorly molded circumferential elastomeric edge bead. Each aperture edge includes a circumferential array of small openings for mechanical securement of the elastomeric bead to the plastic carrier, and each opening fills with elastomer upon the overmolding of the bead to the edge during manufacture. The gasket also includes primary and secondary compression limiters, formed of powdered metal in described embodiment, located immediately adjacent bolt holes and symmetrically between air intake apertures, respectively. Finally, the gasket includes flexible locator grommets for assuring positive alignment between the cylinder head and intake manifold.

Abstract: A gasket-squeeze construction wherein a warp-limiter member is installed in a bolt hole in which a fastening bolt fits. The warp-limiter member is made less in an amount of flex than confronting surfaces, between which the gasket is disposed and squeezed by the tightening of the fastening bolt. The warp-limiter member serves to make the sealing stress uniform around a combustion gas hole. The warp-limiter member installed in the bolt hole, because of tougher to flex than the confronting surfaces when tightening the fastening bolt, makes uniform the clamping force of the fastening bolt and the compressive stress created around the associated bolt hole, moreover dispersing uniformly the sealing stress throughout around the combustion gas hole such as a cylinder bore, thereby rendering variation in distortion in the sealing joint less to improve the sealing performance.

Abstract: A gasket is provided that is suitable for use in connection with a cylinder head. The gasket includes a first outer plate including a compensating portion, a second outer plate including a compensating portion, and a compensating plate positioned between said first and second outer plates. Preferably, at least one of said first and second outer plates includes a bead positioned outside of, and in close proximity to, said compensation portion of said plate. The compensating plate includes a compensating element and an edge portion. In a preferred embodiment, the area between the compensating portions of said first and second outer plates defines a compensating area and said compensating element is positioned within said compensating area. If desired, the gasket may also include a spacer plate.

Abstract: A metal gasket for use between heads and blocks of an internal combustion engine in which such gasket is composed of a beaded plate and a stopper plate placed one on top of the other. The metal gasket has an opening corresponding to the cylinder hold of the engine. The metal gasket has an annular stopper formed by folding back the periphery of the opening in the stopper plate. The metal gasket also has a stepped part along the outer periphery of the stopper. This stepped part projects toward the side of the gasket on which the stopper is formed. The metal gasket also has a spacer layer formed between the stopper and an annular pressure receiver of the stopper plate. The metal gasket also has a rubber coating layer formed at least on that side of the stopper plate opposite to the side on which the stopper is formed.

Abstract: The invention relates to a metallic cylinder head gasket for an internal combustion engine, having a cover plate which faces the cylinder head of the internal combustion engine in the installed state and is provided with one or more openings arranged next to one another, corresponding to the combustion chambers of the internal combustion engine. The cover plate has a bead around each opening with a space between the bead and the opening. This leaves a straight sheet metal portion in the edge region of the opening. Arranged adjacent to the bead around each opening radially inwards from the respective bead facing away from the cylinder head is a stopper for the bead, which at the same time forms an upward combustion chamber extension of the seal. In this case, the stopper decreases in its thickness radially outwards in such a way that the surface pressure in the region of the stopper is essentially homogeneous over the width of the stopper under operating conditions.

Abstract: This metal gasket is formed by interposing a shim member between a pair of elastic metal plates, and fixing the shim member and one of the elastic metal plate to each other at the portions thereof which are opposed to a water jacket, whereby the function of the shim member is secured with the fixed portions and opposed surfaces not interfering with each other. The shim member comprises a shim member body corresponding to an end surface of a cylinder body of a cylinder block, and projecting portions integral with said shim member body and extending therefrom to a position opposed to the water jacket. The fixing portions at which the shim member and one elastic metal plate are fixed to each other by crimping are positioned on the projecting portions extending to positions opposed to the water jacket.

Abstract: A gasket for use in an internal combustion engine is disclosed which includes a sealing element formed by an extrusion and ironing process in combination with a folding operation. The gasket has a plate that includes a body portion, a flange portion and an aperture. The thickness of the flange portion is reduced to less than that of the body portion by the extrusion and ironing process. The flange portion is then folded back onto a surface of the plate in facing relation to form a stopper seal to act as a primary seal. Optional embossments may then be formed radially and outwardly of the stopper seal so as to form a secondary seal.

Abstract: A metal gasket is disclosed in which a sealing stress exerted on a deck-surface from any one of confronting bead plates is dispersed slantwise along the direction leaving its associated cylinder bore aperture so that the cylinder bores are protected from deformation owing to the high sealing stress occurring in the open-end portions of the cylinder bores. The bead plates have sealing beads confronting flanges of an first intermediate plates at their borderlines smaller radially of their associated cylinder bore apertures while confronting the first intermediate plate, less in thickness than the flanges, at their borderlines larger radially of their associated apertures. The sealing stress on the deck-surfaces of the cylinder block and cylinder liner due to deformation of the beads may be dispersed uniformly over the flanges to thereby reduce the influence of the sealing stress on the liner section of the cylinder liner.

The weld spacing in the zone of high welding density is such that a distortion in the shim ring is produced under the influence of heat generated during the welding operation if the weld spacing is used around the full circumference of the shim ring for spot welding. However, by interposing a zone of a low welding density, a distortion in the shim ring can be prevented while increasing the welding strength.
