Abstract: The present invention provides a blade seal for use with a blade that compresses the blade seal to form a seal across a sealing junction. The blade seal includes a recessed ridge for receiving the blade and having a plurality of ridge contact points. When the blade compresses the blade seal to form the seal, the plurality of ridge contact points contacts the blade. The blade seal also may include side lobes extending from the recessed ridge and having respective lobe contact points. When the blade compresses the blade seal, the lobe contact points also contact the blade. The blade seal also includes a secondary sealing portion. When the blade compresses the blade seal to form the seal, the recessed ridge presses against the secondary sealing portion. The multiple contact points between the blade seal and blade, and the presence of a secondary sealing portion, enhance the efficacy of the seal.

Abstract: A seal design provides positive compression to produce a hermetic seal around a feedthrough pin in a hermetically sealed device, including an implantable medical device. One embodiment of the seal design uses a plurality of “micro-flanges” placed along the length of a feedthrough pin, which micro-flanges grabs and compresses the insulator material to form a hermetic seal. Because the seal design produces positive compression of the insulator, the seal is relatively insensitive to changes in temperature and to differences in thermal expansion coefficients (“TCEs”) between the metal feedthrough and the insulator. It is therefore possible to use a wider variety of materials for the insulator and the feedthrough with the described sealing design, while achieving a superior hermetic seal.

Abstract: Provided is a seal that can ensure a satisfactory sealing property and can be easily separated from a sealing surface even in the case in which the seal is used for a long period of time under the conditions of a high temperature and a high pressure. The seal includes a seal body mounted in a seal groove that is formed in a first member and a second member is made to be in pressure contact with the first member to form a sealing part. The sealing part that comes into contact with the second member at the entire surface of the sealing part is formed along the entire circumference of the outer peripheral surface of the seal. A step portion is formed on the outer peripheral surface of the seal in such a manner that an area of a contact surface is smaller for the sealing part as the contact area is closer to the bottom side of the seal groove.

Abstract: A seal structure of a fuel cell includes a first seal surface formed in a first separator disposed on one side of an electrolyte membrane and a second seal surface formed in a second separator disposed on the other side of the electrolyte membrane, and a sealant collecting structure formed in or outside at least one of the first and second seal surfaces. The sealant collecting structure is constructed of a stepped receding surface formed in at least one of the first and second seal surfaces, a concave or groove formed in an inner portion and/or an outer portion of at least one of the first and second seal surfaces, a space formed outside at least one of the separators, or a stepped recess formed in at least one of the separators. The sealant collecting structure receives an extra sealant therein to ensure uniform seal pressure acting on the sealant and to prevent the extra sealant from being bulged out to gas passages and to a gas manifold.

Abstract: Mounting rings and methods for mounting structures to shafts are provided. The rings and methods may be used to mount other rings or housings to a shaft. The rings are characterized by having flexible inner diameters that can deflect under a radial load. The radial deflection of the inner diameter permits the rings to deflect and engage an outer diameter of a shaft. The engagement of the rings with a shaft provides at least some resistance to the rotation of the shaft relative to the ring and structure. In one aspect, the ring is substantially rigidly mounted to the shaft. The ring may include a plurality of indentations, such as slots, on the inside diameter of the ring. These indentations may relieve at least some of the circumferential stress created by the radial deflection. Methods for using the rings to mount a structure to a shaft are also disclosed.
