Abstract: A Tread Wheel Frame System drives a human-powered cycle by means of a tread wheel driving a tread of a drive wheel of a cycle rather than driving a drive wheel hub, as conventional cycles do. Most of the driving mechanism, including the tread wheel, a speed ratio mechanism, shifting means, and a power unit device, are safely located above the level of a cycle s axles where they are less likely to encounter accidental impact. The tread wheel with the power unit device also does the braking, which eliminates the need for caliper brakes or hub brakes. Accordingly, a drive wheel is lighter, without the need for a heavy hub, or a heavy rim to withstand the wear and heat of friction of caliper brakes. The tread wheel frame is uniquely designed and engineered to be light, yet strong where needed.

Abstract: An all-terrain bicycle is comprised of a bicycle frame having a front and a rear fork to which is removably secured a front and a rear wheel. Each wheel has a circular rim which is interconnected to the hub by spokes. The rear wheel has sprockets secured to the central hub and which is interconnected to a driving sprocket by a chain or other such belt-like drive connector. Each of the rims is provided with a surface engaging support shoes assembly to provide support of the bicycle on a surface. Such bicycles are particularly useful for riding on soft and also irregular surfaces which are deformable such as sand, snow or the like.

  • Patent number: 6257610
Abstract: A foot-operated propulsion apparatus for a wheelchair and/or other selected devices such as desk chairs and furniture. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a support structure coupled to the selected device and having at least one roller aperture. A roller element having a circular cross-sectional shape is received in the roller aperture and is rotatable relative to the support structure about a rotation axis or a plurality of rotation axes. The roller element has a first external portion projecting upwardly from the aperture to engage the user's foot and a second external surface portion projecting downwardly through the aperture to engage the ground or other support surface. As the user engages the roller element and rotates the element by foot, the propulsion apparatus and the device to which it is coupled move along the ground. The user can directly engage the roller element or can engage a brake device coupled to the roller element to slow the propulsion device.

  • Patent number: 5690345
Abstract: A rectilinear drive assembly for a bicycle. The drive assembly includes a pair of tracks that each have a pair of opposing side portions joined by a pair of opposing radial end portions which together define a rectilinear path. The drive assembly also has a pair of pedals that are coupled to the track by a pair of wheel assemblies. The wheel assemblies follow the outline of the tracks so that the pedals move in a rectilinear path. The linear movement of the pedal provides a more efficient transfer of power from the rider's legs to the drive assembly. Each wheel assembly has a pair of inner wheels that roll along an inner surface of the track and a pair of outer wheels that roll along an outer surface of the track. The outer wheels are separated by a distance greater than the separation of the inner wheels to compensate for the different radiuses of the inner and outer surfaces at the radial end portions of the track. The wheel assemblies are connected to chains which rotate a number of sprockets.

Abstract: A power transmission unit for coupling a prime mover to a vehicle, in particular a bicycle. The unit has a clutch assembly, a gear train, and a freewheel mechanism. The output shaft of the prime mover is connected to the input side of the clutch assembly. The output of the clutch assembly is connected to the input side of the gear train. The output side of the gear train is connected to the freewheel mechanism. The freewheel mechanism is connected to a first sprocket wheel. The first sprocket wheel and a second sprocket wheel are mounted together on a common freewheel which in turn is mounted on the crankshaft of the bicycle. The second sprocket wheel is connected to the rear wheel of the bicycle. In the absence of power from the prime mover, the bicycle may be used in a conventional manner. When in use, the prime mover drives the rear wheel of the bicycle via the clutch assembly, gear train, freewheel mechanism, sprocket wheels and the rear wheel.

Abstract: A wheeled vehicle and propulsion device therefor is provided comprising an elongated pole, and at a first end of said pole, a handle for manipulation by the operator of the vehicle. At a second end of the pole is a ground engaging element for frictionally engaging the surface over which the vehicle is to be propelled. This ground engaging element includes a wheel member, and a clutch interconnecting said wheel member with said pole, the clutch device constructed so that the wheel turns freely in one rotational direction, but resists turning in the other rotational direction. Thus, when said ground engaging element is pushed against said surface in one direction, thrust from said handle is transmitted through the pole, through the wheel member and to the ground so that said vehicle is urged in the opposite direction, but when said wheel member is permitted to merely roll along the surface, the wheel member rotates freely.
