  • Patent number: 6276722
Abstract: The invention provides a binder or portfolio for carrying looseleaf paper, books, school supplies, etc. wherein said binder includes an expandable gusset attached to the front and back covers of the binder. The covers of the binder are foldably attached to a central spine and the gusset is split into two sections running along the periphery of the inner sides of the covers. The gusset is provided with a means for releasable attachment such that when the front cover of the binder is folded over the back cover of the binder, the two sections of the gusset may be attached to one another, thereby securing the contents of the binder inside. Preferably, the gusset is made from an elastic material such as neoprene and the releasable means of attachment is a zipper-type closure. This construction of the gusset from an expandable material allows oversized objects such as larger textbooks to be placed in the binder without damaging the structural integrity of the gusset and the binder when the binder is fastened shut.

The boot has a boot recess in which a handle body of the handle is received when the handle is in a retracted position, in which the boot surrounds the handle body. A support member of the handle is attached to the handle body and is movably associated with the boot below the boot surface. Thus, the handle body is retractably extendable from the retracted position to an extended position in which the handle body is spaced from the boot back for enabling grasping of the handle body by a user.

  • Patent number: 6045159
Abstract: A holder for a book, such as a paperback or hard cover book, comprises a stiff flat member creased to provide a central stationary panel corresponding to the spine of the book, and a pair of pivoted panels corresponding to the front and back of the book. A spring assembly comprises a plurality of long concave thin metal members connected together by a strip of tape and connected to the stiff flat member by a pop rivet. The ends of the springs are received by a pair of plastic sleeves which are stitched to the stiff flat member. The stiff flat member is covered by a vinyl sheet in such a way as to have a curved edge providing a radius of at least 1/16". A transparent strap connects to the opposite sides of the book holder and presses open pages of the book against the flat stiff member. • Patent number: 6017164
Abstract: A folder or loose leaf type binder has a novel spine construction using a rigid sheet with a pair of spaced apart creases to form a spine stiffener with adjacent cover stiffeners. Since the cover stiffeners extend only partially into the cover portions of the folder, a natural break occurs in each of the two covers which, in turn, makes the folder easier to handle, prevents the covers from closing inadvertently, and allows the pages of the folder to lay at a preferred attitude and angle.
