  • Patent number: 4376334
Abstract: The invention provides a terminal clamp assembly comprising a fastener and one or more captive members and a method for making such a terminal clamp assembly. The terminal clamp assembly comprises a threaded fastener including a driver head portion, a threaded shank portion of predetermined thread crest diameter and an unthreaded shank portion of lesser diameter intermediate the threaded shank portion and the driver head portion. A captive member has a through aperture of greater diameter than the thread crest diameter and surrounding the unthreaded shank portion, and laterally oppositely outwardly extending protrusions on opposed outer edge portions. These protrusions are compressed by a planar die so as to deform the through aperture to a dimension smaller than the thread crest diameter, thereby captively assembling the captive member with the fastener, subsequent to formation and heat treatment of the fastener.

  • Patent number: 4366849
Abstract: A cable-type tire chain comprises side members adapted to extend circumferentially around opposite side walls of a tire and cross members connected between the side members so as to extend over and across the tire tread, the cross members carrying traction means in the form of traction sleeves. A low profile articulated connection is provided between each end of each cross member and one of the side members, the connection comprising one connector element crimped on the cross member and another connector element crimped on the side member. One connector element has a T-shaped head and the other element has a bent-over tab with an opening through which the head is inserted. When the tab is flattened the head is trapped in the other connector element. The connection allows for hinging movement of a cross member both laterally and circumferentially of a tire.

Abstract: A cable-type tire chain comprises side members adapted to extend circumferentially around opposite side walls of a tire and cross members connected between the side members so as to extend over and across the tire tread. The cross members comprise cables connected to the side members in a manner permitting rotation of the cross members about their longitudinal axes. The cross member cables have sheaths of helically wound wire which are free to rotate on the cables, and traction sleeves are freely rotatable on the wire sheaths. The traction sleeves have cylindrical body portions and outwardly flared end portions. Notches in the end portions of the sleeves define sharp corners at the ends of the sleeves for biting into ice and the like.

  • Patent number: 4033020
Abstract: A slip joint including telescoped inner and outer members having substantially unstressed plastic material interposed therebetween. The joint is made by first telescoping inner and outer members with the plastic material interposed therebetween. The outer member is then deformed inwardly to place the plastic material under considerable compressive stress. The deformed area is then heated for expanding the plastic material and relieving the compressive stress by plastic movement of the plastic material. The plastic material is then cooled and minimal sliding clearance is provided between the inner member and the plastic material. The outer member is thus deformed inwardly in at least one localized area and the plastic material has a thickness beneath the deformed area which is substantially less than the thickness thereof beyond the deformed area.

  • Patent number: 4004434
Abstract: A low cost universal joint is disclosed, and the method for making the same, in which the smaller cross pin is transversely deformed in the region of intersection thereof with the main pin. In one embodiment, the transverse opening in the main pin is offset slightly from the center of the pin toward one end thereof, and pressing the main pin into a seated relation causes the slight deformation of the cross pin, thus capturing the pins in place. In another embodiment, the main pin is hollow, and the portion of the cross pin within the walls of the main pin is transversely deformed by inserting a punch through one end of the main pin and striking the exposed portion of the cross pin within the main pin, thus performing the transverse deformation and locking the pins in assembled relation within the universal joint.
