  • Patent number: 5405176
Abstract: A relatively impervious mechanical seal is formed between the outer surface of a tube and the inside surface of a mechanical fitting of a high pressure fluid or hydraulic system by applying a very thin soft metal layer onto the outer surface of the hard metal tube and/or inner surface of the hard metal fitting, prior to swaging the fitting onto the tube. The thickness of such thin metal layer is independent of the size of the tube and/or fittings. Many metals and alloys of those metals exhibit the requisite softness, including silver, gold, nickel, tin, platinum, indium, rhodium and cadmium. Suitably, the coating is about 0.0025 millimeters (0.10 mils) in thickness. After swaging, the tube and fitting combination exhibits very low leak rates on the order or 10.sup.-8 cubic centimeters per second or less as meaured using the Helium leak test.

  • Patent number: 5384948
Abstract: An assembly of two components comprises a male member and a female member, the latter having a shoulder, with the male member abutted against the shoulder in back-to-back relationship. The female member has a groove. The male member is worked so as to cause its material to invade at least part of this groove in plastic flow. The groove is located beside the periphery of the shoulder having the larger diameter (i.e. the outer periphery of the shoulder), so that the plastic flow of the material of the male member takes place radially outwardly. Arrangements are also provided for sealing the assembly of the two components. The invention is applicable, for example, to torsion dampers for motor vehicles.

Abstract: A method of making an injection and sampling site adapted to receive a blunt cannula. The method comprises providing an elastomeric septum, and a housing adapted to receive that septum; making a slit in the elastomeric septum; inserting the elastomeric septum into the passageway of the housing; and swaging an outer annular ledge on the housing inwardly over the septum until a septum-engaging portion of the swaging tool applies a predetermined amount of force to the septum. Before the swaging step, a pin is inserted into the passageway of the housing against the inside end of the septum to inhibit deformation of the septum during swaging.

  • Patent number: 5347701
Abstract: A tube union for coupling the ends of a pair of tubes which are butted together includes a sleeve and two swaging collars about the sleeve without other components. Grooves and lands in the sleeve mate with a tube which is deformed into the grooves as the sleeve is urged inwardly under compression. The rings are urged centrally towards the central position of the sleeve by a tool constituted by two housing members which each have several components. Torsional wrenching of the housing members screws the housing members together, causing the collars to deform the sleeve. Thereafter pins are removed from the one housing members and the wrench from the other. This permits separation of the housing members from the swaging collars. The tool can effect connection or assembly of different elements.

  • Patent number: 5335411
Abstract: A method of permanently attaching a fastening element, such as a nut or bolt to panels having a range of panel thicknesses, such as the metal panels used by the automotive and appliance industries. The fastening element includes a tubular barrel portion and preferably an annular bearing face surrounding the barrel portion. The method includes punching a hole in the panel, then plasticly deforming and drawing the panel surrounding the hole into a dome or frusto-conically shaped portion. The panel hole is thus enlarged to receive the fastener element barrel portion from adjacent the apex of the frusto-conically shaped panel portion and the bearing face is then driven against the panel, deforming the panel to a generally planar shape. The panel surrounding the hole is thereby driven against the tubular barrel portion which, in the preferred embodiment, includes radially projecting ribs, providing securement against rotation even in very thin panels.

  • Patent number: 5217261
Abstract: A tube connector for sealing a flareless tube to a fitting having a flat sealing face perpendicular to the fitting axis. The tube connector incorporates a ferrule engaged by a sleeve mounted on the end of the tube and having a flat radial surface for engaging the fitting sealing face. The ferrule is deformable and establishes a primary wedge type metal-to-metal sealing engagement with the tube by a compression nut threaded upon the fitting. The ferrule radially bows under axial and radial compression and this deformation suppresses vibration while the shape of the ferrule end engaged by the nut increases the radial forces on the ferrule as the nut is tightened to provide firm tube support remote from the seal region. The sleeve is provided with an internal undercut adapted to outwardly flare the end of the tube to lock the tube to the sleeve, and radially support the tube end as the tube is compressed during connection.

  • Patent number: 4818166
Abstract: An attachment and method for axially securing a component on the surface of a shaft or bore by forming an annular groove adjacent the component and inserting a closed retaining ring within the annular groove. The retaining ring has a larger internal diameter than the diameter of the shaft or a smaller external diameter than the diameter of the bore. The retaining ring is pressed into the annular groove and plastically deformed by a tool that contacts the ring at angularly spaced portions of the retaining ring surface until the ring fills the groove without axial clearance or play. The annular groove formed on the shaft or bore has a cross section for receiving a standard commercial retaining ring or circlip. The portions of the retaining ring located between the portions that are deformed by the tool form convex portions that extend radially away from the annular groove and define a space for the insertion of a prying tool.

Abstract: A metal rod having a radial flange formed at one end and space pointed projections formed on the underside of the flange is inserted through a round hole in a metal plate. The metal rod plate combination is placed in a press on a bottom die having an axial insertion hole and an annular step formation of alternate grooves and ridges on the top surface of the bottom die round the insertion hole. Under pressing force, metal of the metal plate in its region around the bottom edge of the round hole is extruded radially inwardly against the neck portion of the flanged metal round rod under the effect of the step formation on the bottom die while at the same time the projections are driven into the surface of metal plate. The resulting metal assembly exhibits substantially improved adhension and torsional resistance between the metal members.
