Patent number: 4442586Abstract: A joint is provided between one tube and another tube without the necessity of a heavy thick-walled metal coupling. The joint includes first and an optional second enlarged portions on a first tube with the second enlarged portion near an end of the second tube. A first shoulder is provided between the first enlarged portion and the main body of the first tube. A second annular shoulder is provided at the junction between the first and second enlarged portions. The end of the second tube slips into the first enlarged portion of the second tube and the second tube is then axially compressed so as to form an annular bead which acts against and is contained by the second enlarged portion of the first tube. This axial compression provides both a mechanical interconnection so that the tubes will not axially separate despite fluid pressure or mechanical force, and also provides a fluid tight seal at the annular bead and the second shoulder or second enlarged portion.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1981Date of Patent: April 17, 1984Inventor: Ralph G. Patent number: 4392678Abstract: A two-piece self-locking end fitting is made from a collar which fits over the end of a plastic hose and an annularly serrated insert which fits within the hose. In one embodiment, after the collar is placed over the end of a thick-walled hose, the insert is placed inside the end of the hose. In another embodiment, an insert is first placed inside a thin-walled hose to give it added body and rigidity. Then, the collar is slipped over the outside end of the hose. In either embodiment, a swaging die is drawn over the collar to reduce its diameter and thereby capture the hose against the annular serrations of the insert. As the diameter reduces, an annular ridge in the collar is automatically canted into an annular valley in the insert to securely lock them together. After the cant takes place, further compression causes the ridge to elongate and lock the insert firmly so that it cannot move relative to the collar, which in turn provides the primary gripping force to hold the hose and fitting together.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1980Date of Patent: July 12, 1983Assignee: Titeflex CorporationInventor: Rudolph A. Patent number: 4389766Abstract: An improved fastener includes a polygonal rim which cooperates with an axially projecting center section to define a recess in which sheet material is forced by a die to hold the fastener against rotational and axial movement relative to the sheet material. To improve the gripping action between the fastener and the sheet material, the sheet material is stretched by a tool which extends through the center of the fastener. When a hole is cut in the sheet material by the fastener, the prestretched metal resiliently contracts to grip the center section of the fastener. The gripping action between the sheet material and the fastener is further improved by resiliently compressing the center section of the fastener with the die. As the center section is withdrawn from the die, the center section springs outwardly to decrease the size of the recess and grip the sheet material. In addition, the rim is resiliently deflected radially outwardly by the die as metal is forced into the recess.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 1980Date of Patent: June 28, 1983Assignee: The Lamson & Sessions Co.Inventor: Terry D. Patent number: 4387497Abstract: A cylindrical bushing is positioned over the shank of a screw member prior to forming threads on the shank. After the threads are formed, the outside diameter of the threads is greater than the inside diameter of the bushing so that the bushing is held captive on the shank of the screw. A cylindrical sleeve is then inwardly deformed so as to be permanently secured to the bushing. The opposite end of the sleeve facing away from the head of the screw shank extends beyond the bushing and forms a skirt which can be peened over the peripheral inner edge of a panel opening to secure the sleeve to the panel, thereby holding the screw captive to the panel. The end of the bushing next to the underside of the screw head has an increased internal diameter portion for accommodating a spring serving to bias the head and shank away from the bushing so that when the screw is unfastened, it will pop outwardly and release quickly any member to be secured to the panel.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1980Date of Patent: June 14, 1983Inventor: Bulent Gulistan
