Abstract: A turbine engine structure is provided that includes a wall having an exterior surface defining an internal passage. A locating hole extends through the wall from the exterior surface to the passage. A film hole is recessed in the exterior surface and adjoins the locating hole. The film hole and locating hole are in communication with the passage. The locating hole is formed during the casting process in which a core is supported with a locating pin. Upon removal of the locating pin, the locating hole is formed. The locating holes can be used to determine a position of features of the structure for subsequent processing operations of the structure. For example, film holes are machined in the exterior surface, such as by an electrical discharge machining process, to intersect the locating holes.

  • Patent number: 6688871
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for encapsulating a workpiece in a material having a lower melting temperature than that of the material for the workpiece to form an encapsulated block of standardized size and shape which may be mounted in a standardized fixture to facilitate machining on the workpiece. The invention includes both specialized molds for use in encapsulating a workpiece for various types of machining and systems for clamping and injecting encapsulant into such molds under pressure. After machining on a given side, a block is re-inserted in the appropriate mold and re-encapsulated to standardize size and shape for a subsequent machining operation. The process of machining and re-encapsulation are repeated until all sides of the workpiece requiring machining have been machined, at which time the encapsulant is removed from the workpiece, normally by being heated and melted.

Abstract: A process for producing implants made of a bioresorbable metal, particularly magnesium alloys or zinc alloys, in which the material properties of the magnesium or the zinc are changed and the processing and utilization properties are improved by combining process steps for adjusting the properties of the material and subsequent machining. In this way it is possible to produce thin-walled tubular implants, particularly blood vessel support stents, from bioresorbable magnesium or zinc alloys, which are readily deformable without the risk of fracture during implantation.

  • Patent number: 6615487
Abstract: A base material of a peripheral wall and a vane rotor is formed by extrusion molding an aluminum alloy and cutting an extrusion molded article to the desired length. Further, the extrusion molded article can be molded with high accuracy by extracting the aluminum alloy after extrusion. Preferably, 6000 system of Al—Mg—Si is used as an aluminum alloy. The cutting process and polishing process are applied to the roughly molded base material to form the peripheral wall and the vane rotor. By varying the length to be cut, the volume of each retard hydraulic chamber and each advance hydraulic chamber are adjusted. When the volume of the hydraulic chambers are adjusted, the torque for relatively rotating and driving the vane rotor with respect to the housing member can be changed even pressure of working oil is the same.

Abstract: Membrane electrode assemblies are described that include an ion conductive membrane a catalyst adjacent to the major surfaces of the ion conductive membrane and a porous particle filled polymer membrane adjacent to the ion conductive membrane. The catalyst can be disposed on the major surfaces of the ion conductive membrane. Preferably, the catalyst is disposed in nanostructures. The polymer film serving as the electrode backing layer preferably is processed by heating the particle loaded porous film to a temperature within about 20 degrees of the melting point of the polymer to decrease the Gurley value and the electrical resistivity. The MEAs can be produced in a continuous roll process. The MEAs can be used to produce fuel cells, electrolyzers and electrochemical reactors.
