Abstract: Various methods for controlling a wastegate with an electric actuator including a bias are provided. In one example, the actuator is supplied with a first current when moving a wastegate valve toward a fully open position, and is supplied with a second current when moving a wastegate toward a fully closed position. The methods may ensure appropriate supply of boost to an engine even in the event of wastegate degradation while enabling engine downsizing.

  • Publication number: 20140069085
Abstract: A method and internal combustion engine system are provided for keeping an exhaust gas aftertreatment system within its working temperature range during an idle or motoring engine operation mode of an internal combustion engine. The method includes sensing the temperature of the gas at the gas intake side of the internal combustion engine and/or of the exhaust gas; determining whether or not the sensed temperature value is in a predetermined temperature interval or below a predetermined temperature threshold; determining whether the internal combustion engine is in idle or motoring engine operation mode; in case the internal combustion engine is determined to be in an idle or motoring engine operation mode, controlling the temperature of the gas at the gas intake side of the internal combustion engine to be within the predetermined temperature range or below the predetermined temperature threshold by recirculating exhaust gas through a connecting duct by controlling at least one valve.

  • Publication number: 20140069523
Abstract: A method of reforming an annular attachment flange of an outer annular portion of a gas generator case, including inserting a first fixture element within the annular portion, the first fixture element conforming to an inner surface of the flange and forcing the flange radially outwardly passed a desired orientation, pressing the attachment flange against the first fixture element with a second annular fixture element surrounding the flange and conforming to an outer surface of the flange, heating the outer portion pressed by the fixture elements to a temperature and time period corresponding to an annealing of the material of the outer portion, forcing cooling of the outer portion, and disengaging the cooled outer portion from the fixture elements so that the released flange extends at the desired orientation. A gas generator case including a reformed outer portion and an unused inner portion is also discussed.

Abstract: An after-treatment system includes a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst or a similar aftertreatment unit or brick that may be inserted into the opened end of a sleeve. The aftertreatment brick includes a substrate matrix with catalytic material that extends between a first face and a second face. A mantle is disposed around the substrate matrix and extends between a first rim proximate the first face and a second rim proximate the second face. The mantel may include a overhang extension that extends the first rim of the mantle beyond the first face of the substrate matrix. To enable retrieval of the SCR catalyst from the sleeve, a retrieval feature is disposed on a readily accessible, inner surface of the overhang extension.
