Patent number: 6497038Abstract: There is provided a method for suspending roller tappets in an internal combustion engine without removal of the cylinder head and gasket. The rocker arm assembly is removed. Each push rod is then removed and replaced with tappet suspension tool to engage a corresponding roller tappet. A suspension tool guide bar is then installed to connect to the tappet suspension tools. The roller tappets are then simultaneously moved to a raised position away from the camshaft forming a clearance between the roller tappets and camshaft bearings. The roller tappets are then secured in the raised position by a securing block. The camshaft can then be removed from the engine block. Alternatively, the rear half of the front cover can be removed by first removing the idler gears, followed by removal of the camshaft, and last removing the rear half of the front cover from the engine case.Type: GrantFiled: August 2, 2001Date of Patent: December 24, 2002Assignee: International Engine Intellectual Property Company, L.L.C.Inventors: Frank A. Patent number: 6449842Abstract: A process (30) is presented for the post-honing cleaning and lubrication of a cylinder (24) of a reciprocating engine (22) prior to assembly thereof. The process (30) includes cleaning (32) the cylinder (24) with a water-and-wetting-agent solution and with a solvent in an effort to remove contaminants. The process (30) also includes lubricating (40) the cylinder (24) with a penetrating oil, and coating (42) the cylinder (24) with an indicating lubricant (28) formed of a powdered mixture of tungsten disulfide and graphite. The indicating lubricant (28) is configured to change color to assume a specific tint when contaminants have been substantially removed from the cylinder (24), and to refrain from assuming that tint when contaminants have not been substantially removed from the cylinder (24).Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2000Date of Patent: September 17, 2002Assignee: Total Seal, Inc.Inventor: C. Patent number: 6434809Abstract: A kit for both removal of a camshaft from a cylinder block and for installation of a camshaft into a cylinder block includes a minimum of six unitary, molded plastic camshaft guides, an extraction tool, and a pilot to be attached to a rear face of the camshaft in order to provide additional support. Each camshaft guide has a generally C-shaped body and is constructed and arranged to fit onto a corresponding one of the camshaft lobes. Due to the “beyond center” configuration of each camshaft guide, a significant pulling force is required to remove each guide from its corresponding camshaft lobe. Each guide includes an internally-threaded hole which mates with a threaded end on the extraction tool and the extraction tool is used to manually pull each guide off of its corresponding lobe. The pilot includes a generally cylindrical body and a rod inserted therethrough having a threaded tip at one end and an enlarged head at the opposite end.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 2000Date of Patent: August 20, 2002Assignee: Cummins Engine Company, Inc.Inventor: Ram B. Patent number: 6195886Abstract: A method of repairing a cylinder head of a water cooled internal combustion engine that has damage to the boundary wall between a cooling water passage and the combustion chamber. According to the method. the boundary wall B located between a cooling water passage and a combustion chamber and including a crack is cut away from a cylinder head until the cut reaches a depth of one half the cross section of the cooling water passage. Then, a half-pipe portion. having a semicircular cross section that is equal in size to one-half the cross section of the cooling water passage is fixed in the cylinder head from which the boundary wall B has been removed such that an inner surface of the half-pipe may serve to form a cooling water passage after repair. With the use of the above method, the repair operation is completed easily with a low cost because the boundary wall B has only to be cut away to a shallow depth.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1999Date of Patent: March 6, 2001Assignee: Toei Engineering Co., Ltd.Inventor: Kazuo Azuma
