  • Patent number: 7291953
Abstract: A magnet assembly includes a back iron and an array of magnets. The back iron is in the form of a plate having opposed surfaces. The magnets are arranged along one of the surfaces, with the other surface being dimensioned and configured according to the magnetic field distribution associated with the magnets. The back iron geometry provides for reduced mass, reduced leakage flux, and high flux densities to improve performance of a linear motor that employs such a magnet assembly. Additionally, the back iron can be a magnetically conductive annular ring, such as is employed in a rotary motor. Moreover, the magnets can be arranged in a manner that generates a Halbach array to increase force output in a desired direction while canceling stray magnetic fields in other directions. Similar reduced-mass designs can be employed in conjunction with a back iron of a fixed cross-section and magnets of variable thicknesses, variable lengths, and/or variable widths.

  • Patent number: 6392321
Abstract: A rotary device includes an output shaft securely connected to a sandwiched structure including a central magnetic permeable member and two outer magnetic un-permeable members. The sandwiched structure is enclosed by a ring composed of a plurality of sections assembled by the sandwiched structure. Each section has another sandwiched structure which is rotated by a cam member mounted on the output shaft by links. The output shaft is rotated by an initial force and will be rotated by the magnetic force by the inter-action between these sandwiched structures without extra force applied on the output shaft.

  • Patent number: 5262693
Abstract: An electrical generator (10) having particular utility as a vehicle alternating generator includes a planetary gear set (32) for providing counter rotation of a pair of fields (80,82) with respect to a coil (60) so as to provide high power output even at relatively low speeds of driving without providing excessive rotational speed at high speeds of driving. In one embodiment, the planetary gear set (32) includes a ring gear (36), a sun gear (44), and a planet carrier (50) whose planet gears (52) rotate about associated axes parallel to the rotational axis A about which the planetary gear set operates. In another embodiment, the planetary gear set has a bevel gear construction including first and second bevel gears (36',44') rotatable about the rotational axis of the planetary gear set and meshed with bevel type planet gears (52') of the planet carrier (50') so that the two field (80',82') have counter rotation with respect to each other at the same rotational speed.

  • Patent number: 4882513
Abstract: The effects of operational loading on a permanent magnet generator of the type having first and second permanent magnet assemblies 28, 30 mounted on a shaft 26, and movable relative to each other is eliminated by rotatably mounting each of the assemblies 28, 30 for rotation relative to the shaft 26, as well as to each other, and connecting them to the shaft by equal, but oppositely pitched helical spline connections 50, 52, 58, 60. Axial movement of the shaft 26 will then cause equal, but opposite relative movement of the permanent magnet assemblies 28, 30, so that the forces resisting movement of one such assembly act to encourage movement of the other, thereby balancing out said forces.
