Abstract: A system and method of providing a protective cover to occupants of a room, which includes detecting an occurrence of a threatening event with a protection system deployed in the room, such as detecting gunfire with the protection system and/or receiving a transmitted command of the threatening event by the protection system, and emitting an obscuring haze into the room from a haze generator of the protection system in response to the detected occurrence of the gunfire. The emitted obscuring haze obscures the light of sight contact between a shooter and the occupants in the room, which provides a measure of cover for the occupants while other assistance is being organized. This reduces the chances that the shooter will be able to accurately shoot any victim, increasing the odds of victim survival.

Abstract: A list of alert filters may be used to alert alerts generated by remote machines. For example, received alerts may be compared to the list of alert filters. When an alert filter matches the received alert, a new action may be taken by the monitoring agent, such as to raise or lower a priority of the alert or to take an action to message an administrator. When no alert filter matches the alert, a default action for the alert may be taken.
Abstract: Provided are methodologies to properly assess and manage operational risks at operations sites, e.g., a manufacturing, production or processing facility, such as a refinery, chemical plant, fluid-catalytic-cracking units, or nuclear energy plant, or a biological or waste management facility, airport or even financial institutions, or at any facility in which operations are often accompanied by risk associated with many high-probability, low-consequence events, often resulting in near-misses. In some operations, processes are monitored by alarms, but the invention operates on either process data or alarm data. The methods are based upon measurement of one or more variables, and/or utilization and management of the concept of “hidden process near-miss(es)” to identify a change or escalation, if any, in probability of occurrence of an adverse incident. The methodologies combine a plurality of subsets (also useful independently) of dynamically calculated leading risk indicators for dynamic risk management.

Abstract: An environmental monitoring device that includes a sensor mechanism is described. During operation of the environmental monitoring device, the sensor mechanism provides sensor data based on measurements of an environmental condition in an external environment that includes the environmental monitoring device. If the environmental condition indicates a threat, a control mechanism provides an alert based on an alert setting. This alert can be remotely disabled by providing a modified alert setting. In order to prevent accidental disabling of the alert, a separate control command may also be required. When the providing of the alert is disabled, the control mechanism may continue to assess the threat and, if the threat is increasing, may reactivate the providing of the alert. Alternatively, after a time interval, the modified alert setting may automatically revert to the alert setting.
