Abstract: Method for determining spurious contacts on a contact detection sensor for a handle of an automobile door, the sensor defining a locking area and being connected to an onboard electronic locking and unlocking system, includes: a) detecting a contact on the locking area when, for an engagement time of the locking mechanism, the number of charge transfers from the sensor is less than a threshold number of charge transfers, b) evaluating the number of charge transfers, starting from the time of the minimum value of the number of measured charge transfers and for an evaluation time in order to distinguish detections of contacts made by the user from detections of spurious contacts, c) if the contact detections are spurious, matching the threshold number of charge transfers in order to be able to detect any next contact originating from the user on the locking area in the presence of spurious contacts.

Abstract: In-vehicle functions are implemented using a location device disposed in a vehicle, a central controller of the vehicle, and logic executable by a computer processor of the central controller. The location device includes a wireless communications interface. The logic receives a unique identifier of the location device. The unique identifier identifies a location in the vehicle in which the location device is disposed. The logic also validates the location device and an end user device in response to activation of the location device by the end user device via the communications interface. The logic further receives a request from the end user device to implement end user-configured settings for an electronic component that services the location in the vehicle corresponding to the unique identifier and activates the electronic component based on the end user-configured settings.

Abstract: Provided are methodologies to properly assess and manage operational risks at operations sites, e.g., a manufacturing, production or processing facility, such as a refinery, chemical plant, fluid-catalytic-cracking units, or nuclear energy plant, or a biological or waste management facility, airport or even financial institutions, or at any facility in which operations are often accompanied by risk associated with many high-probability, low-consequence events, often resulting in near-misses. In some operations, processes are monitored by alarms, but the invention operates on either process data or alarm data. The methods are based upon measurement of one or more variables, and/or utilization and management of the concept of “hidden process near-miss(es)” to identify a change or escalation, if any, in probability of occurrence of an adverse incident. The methodologies combine a plurality of subsets (also useful independently) of dynamically calculated leading risk indicators for dynamic risk management.

Abstract: A security system for shipping containers includes: a system monitor and a device mounted on the container for locking and/or tracking. The device includes a means of measuring at least one condition of said container (e.g., time of day, ambient light level, location, speed, and acceleration), a tamper sensing system that can be adjusted based on the changes in the measured condition, and a communication system for the tamper sensing system to alert the system monitor when tampering is detected. The tamper sensing system may employ a number of approaches for detecting a tampering event, including vibration, heat, load, impact, and acceleration sensing, as well as changes in location. The tamper sensing system may further disable the lock if tampering is detected.

Abstract: Systems and methods for configuring an analog process alarm in digital control devices are provided. In one example embodiment, a system may include a logic editor configured to create templates, including one or more alias names for corresponding one or more analog alarm sub-variables associated with an analog process variable, within the digital control system; a human-machine interface configured to provide to a user an analog alarm virtual block diagram visualizing processing logic associated with the analog process variable within the digital control system and to receive from the user a request to select a template from the created templates; and a template generator configured to automatically generate, based on the selection of the template, the alias names for the corresponding analog alarm sub-variables of the analog process alarm. The alias names may be defined directly on the analog process variable.

  • Patent number: 8823507
Abstract: Approaches in accordance with various embodiments attempt to provide a user with less disruptive event notifications by being aware of a user's context. Before a notification is sent to multiple computing devices associated with the notifying account, contextual information for each device is determined. The contextual information can be determined by querying each device for information. The information can include how close each device is relative to other devices associated with the same user, if at least one of the devices is moving, whether the user's attention is focused on a particular device, whether the user is engaging multiple devices simultaneously, and the like. Once contextual information associated with each device is determined, an appropriate type of alert associated with the notification is determined for each device.
