  • Patent number: 6646436
Abstract: The support that bears and positions the head in a head holding apparatus is further supported by a heat-compensating member, so that when the support is expanded by the heat source of the head holding apparatus, the heat-compensating member expands in the direction opposite to the direction of expansion of the support. Moreover, supplying of heat to the support and heat-compensating member is further alleviated by insulating said heat source with an insulating material. The amount of displacement of the recording element per unit of time with exposure to heat is controlled by the above-mentioned structure and effects.

Abstract: A spin valve sensor in a read head has a spacer layer which is located between a self-pinned AP pinned layer structure and a free layer structure. The free layer structure is longitudinally stabilized by first and second hard bias layers which abut first and second side surfaces of the spin valve sensor. The AP pinned layer structure has an antiparallel coupling layer (APC) which is located between first and second AP pinned layers (AP1) and (AP2). The invention employs a preferential setting of the magnetic moments of the AP pinned layers by applying a field at an acute angle to the head surface in a plane parallel to the major planes of the layers of the sensor. The preferential setting sets a proper polarity of each AP pinned layer, which polarity conforms to processing circuitry employed with the spin valve sensor.

  • Patent number: 6543673
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for protecting an electrical component from electrostatic discharge prior to its electrical connection to an additional component. Specifically, a flex on suspension circuit of a disc drive that is electrically connected to the read/write head is disclosed as having exposed leads for connection to a printed circuit cable assembly. The exposed leads are shunted with a solder conductor such as solder tape after testing of the circuit and head to prevent electrostatic build-up across the read and write elements. The flex on suspension circuit is then electrically connected to the printed circuit assembly cable by reflowing the solder conductor to bond the exposed leads of the flex on suspension circuit to the electrical contacts of the printed circuit assembly cable and also to remove the electrical short established between the exposed leads by the solder conductor.

  • Patent number: 6487046
Abstract: An improved head support mechanism for a magnetic card reader is described which has a support plate for each magnetic head. The magnetic head is supported to be capable of moving in the plane perpendicular to the support plate and rocking around an axis parallel to the direction in which the card is moved. A projection is placed in a predetermined position on each support plate. A leaf spring contacts each projection at the predetermined position to apply pressure and ensure that the magnetic head contacts the magnetic card to be read.

  • Patent number: 6480356
Abstract: A magnetic head assembly with dual parallelogram supporting structure device and method of making the same has a single or multiple track magnetic stripe read head transducer mounted to a support structure by a dual parallelogram spring structure. This dual spring structure allows the head to move perpendicularly and rotationally to the magnetic stripe while preventing the head from rotating in the y direction, namely, preventing lateral movement. The novel magnetic head assembly is produced using a rapid and accurate assembly without the use of mounting screws in single and multiple track configurations. The unique spring also reduces wear on the magnetic heads which increases the functional life of the unit. The simple construction allows inexpensive manufacture of the magnetic head assembly, yet the durability of available manufacturing materials and the structure of the spring provide the magnetic head assembly with a long useful life, requiring little or no maintenance expense or upkeep.
