  • Patent number: 8363345
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method for automatic unthreading and storage of storage media helps prevent damage to the media, which can otherwise occur when the storage media is left threaded in a storage media drive over an extended period or under adverse conditions. A sensing device may generate a signal or a detector may receive a signal indicating that a predetermined period of time has lapsed or that some other criteria has been met indicating that the storage media should be removed from the storage media drive. An unthread module in the storage media drive receives the signal and automatically unthreads and stores the storage media. A location on the storage media can be marked by the unthread module prior to unthreading such that the media may be returned to the location upon rethreading.

  • Patent number: 8363519
Abstract: Method and apparatus for adaptive arrangement of data on storage media, such as in a multi-device storage array across which data are stored. A virtual hot space is formed to store frequently accessed data. The virtual hot space comprises at least one hot data zone which extends across storage media of a plurality of arrayed storage devices over a selected seek range less than an overall radial width of the media. The frequently accessed data are stored to the hot data zone(s) in response to a host level request, such as from a host level operating system (OS) or by a user which identifies the data as frequently accessed data. Alternatively or additionally, access statistics are accumulated and frequently accessed data are migrated to the hot data zone(s) in relation thereto. Lower accessed data sets are further preferably migrated from the hot data zone(s) to another location of the media.

  • Patent number: 8358127
Abstract: A measuring circuit system in a magnetic field measuring apparatus of the invention has an amplifier and a band-pass filter connected in sequence on an output terminal side of the TMR element, the band-pass filter is a narrow-range band-pass filter such that a peak pass frequency of the filter that is a center is a basic frequency selected from a range of 10 to 40 GHz and a band width centered around the basic frequency is a narrow range of ±0.5 to ±4 GHz; and with the measuring circuit system, an SIN ratio (SNR) of 3 dB or greater is obtained, the SNR being defined by a ratio of an amplitude S of a high-frequency generated signal induced by the TMR element to a total noise N that is a sum of a head noise generated by the TMR element and a circuit noise generated by the amplifier. With such a configuration, an in-plane high-frequency magnetic field generated by a microwave-assisted magnetic head is reliably and precisely measured.

  • Patent number: 8358481
Abstract: The preferred embodiments of the present invention are devices and processes for producing high resolution lithography or pattern formation on the nanometer scale, using a voltage-biased probe that is slider-mounted along with, or separate from but linked to, a magnetic read head within a HDD mechanism. The probe is guided and positioned over a target layer by the motion of the read head which is, itself, guided by signals from servo tracks on a magnetic layer that activate an electromechanical servomechanism within the HDD. An electric field produced by the probe is capable of modifying the surface of the target layer over which the probe flies either directly, or by current induced or thermally induced effects. Targets such as amorphous or crystalline silicon can be hydrogen passivated and the electric field will produce oxidized or anodized lines with nanometer resolution.

  • Publication number: 20120293887
Abstract: Data of a target capacity calculated by a nominal capacity of a tape medium minus a data capacity lost due to execution of backhitchless writing is written to the tape medium. In a tape drive, a command processing unit 41 receives a synchronization command, and a buffer management unit passes data in a buffer to a channel input-output unit. Upon completion of writing the data to the tape, a backhitch determination unit determines whether a mode information storage unit stores information indicating that a high data rate mode is on, whether data of a target capacity can be written to the tape, and whether the written data can be read at a target read data rate. An operation signal output unit issues a command to execute backhitch in case these conditions are not satisfied.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for providing a storage medium with variable track widths. In accordance with various embodiments, a data storage medium is rotated by a motor. A write transducer is used to write concentric data tracks to the storage medium during said rotation. The tracks are provided with variable track widths established by selectively changing a rotational velocity of the medium. The variable track widths can be gradual and/or abrupt, depending on the requirements of a given application. Gradual variations in track width can be used by a linear actuator with a linear translation path to emulate tracks written along a pivot translation path of a rotary actuator. Abrupt variations in track width can be used to provide different zones of tracks having different specified track widths. The tracks may be written using an electron beam recorder (EBR) with a constant write beam power level.

  • Patent number: 8139300
Abstract: This invention provides a magnetic recording medium evaluation apparatus and evaluation method which yield results having good correlation with error rate measurements even when comparing media with different structures. Signals from a function generator are recorded in a magnetic recording medium. The recording signals are also passed through a first digital filter to obtain ideal restored signals. Reproduced signals from the magnetic recording medium are sampled in synchronization with the output from the function generator, and the discrete signals are passed through a second digital filter to obtain restored signals. The outputs from the first and second digital filters are input to an operational amplifier, and the difference between the restored signals and the ideal restored signals is taken for each sampling of the recording signals. The signal-to-noise ratio of the ideal restored signal to the average of the absolute value of this difference is used to evaluate signal quality.

Abstract: Various embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for data processing. As an example, a data processing circuit is discussed that includes an inter-track interference determination circuit operable to calculate an inter-track interference from a previous track data set based at least in part on the previous track data set and a current track data set. The previous track data set includes a gap. A portion of the data in the previous track data set corresponds to a previous track on a storage medium, and the data in the previous track data set corresponding to the gap corresponds to a track preceding a previous track.

Abstract: A servo sector address and a track address of a recording medium of a disk drive are encoded into a combined address value. The combined address value is stored in a combined address field that has fewer bits than the total bits required to uniquely encode the servo sector address and the track address. The position of a transducer head, indicated by the servo sector address and the track address, is determined by reading encoded values from two consecutive servo sectors on the recording medium and then decoding the encoded values.

Abstract: Provided is a method for recording data to a tape medium in such a manner as to achieve the easy management of mutually related multiple data pieces. First data and second data continuously received as a file from a higher level apparatus are accumulated in multiple buffer segments in the form of multiple successive data sets. A data structure is determined for each of the accumulated data sets. Management information indicating a result of the determination is added to the data sets, and the data sets and the management information thereof are stored into the tape medium.

  • Patent number: 8095712
Abstract: A method and apparatus to read information from an information storage medium using a read channel, where that read channel includes a data cache. The invention generates an analog waveform comprising the information, and provides that analog waveform to a read channel, and generates a digital signal from that analog waveform using one or more first operating parameters. The method error corrects that digital signal at an actual error correction rate, and determines if the actual error correction rate is greater than an error correction rate threshold. If the actual error correction rate exceeds the error correction rate threshold, then the method captures the digital signal, stores that captured data in a data cache, reads that digital signal from the cache, generates one or more second operating parameters, and provides those one or more second operating parameters to the read channel.
