Patent number: 12159054Abstract: Identifying recording disk defects in a data storage device such as a hard disk drive (HDD), for which disk defects are not previously identified, includes responsive to a first user data write request to a particular storage area of a disk medium, writing the user data to the particular storage area, reading the written user data from the particular storage area, and verifying the integrity of the user data read from the particular storage area. Upon passing, a second user data write request to the same particular storage area can be fulfilled without again reading and verifying. Upon failing, the particular storage area is marked as defective and the user data is written to a different storage area. This procedure can be repeated in response to each initial user write request to each storage area of each disk medium, foregoing the need for disk surface scanning during manufacturing.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 2022Date of Patent: December 3, 2024Assignee: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Jim French

Patent number: 8503275Abstract: The present disclosure describes apparatuses and techniques of improved sequential-access of storage media. In some aspects an indication that a media disk interface failed to read a sector of a sequential-read during a revolution of the media disk is received and the media disk interface is caused to attempt to read a next sector of the sequential-read subsequent the sector failed to be read during a same revolution of the media disk.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 2012Date of Patent: August 6, 2013Assignee: Marvell International Ltd.Inventors: Jitendra Kumar Swarnkar, Vincent Wong

Patent number: 8493828Abstract: Disclosed are media recording/reproducing method and device in which recording stop due to over retrials during replacement process and wasteful conversion processing in the recording/reproducing device are suppressed when a method of managing the spare area of a write-once medium by the use of an NAP is employed to manage the spare area of a rewritable medium. During format or replacement process of the medium, the NAP is so updated that defective blocks registered as unusable clusters or as usable cluster type 2 within DFL entries in the spare area are not shown.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 2011Date of Patent: July 23, 2013Assignees: Hitachi Consumer Electronics Co., Ltd., Hitachi-LG Data Storage, Inc.Inventor: Kenji Akahoshi

Patent number: 8472296Abstract: An information recording medium, and a recording/reproducing apparatus and a recording/reproducing method for the recording medium. Original data is sequentially updated by replacing an original recording block with one or more replacement recording blocks. A replacement recording block includes at least one of an original address field indicating a location of the original recording block or a previous address field indicating a location of an immediately previous recording block. Replacement information is effectively recovered in a system where a replacement for logical overwriting (LOW) occurs in either a spare area and a user data area by reference to the address fields in each replacement recording block.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2012Date of Patent: June 25, 2013Assignee: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.Inventors: Sung-hee Hwang, Jung-wan Ko

Patent number: 8441902Abstract: The purpose of the present invention is to provide an optical information recording/reproducing device and the like that can suppress a decrease in a recording speed even where an optical information recording medium including multiple layers has eccentricity. The optical information recording/reproducing device records information, by treating a predefined area in a second layer corresponding to a position of a first layer at which a defect is detected, as a defect area. The optical information recording/reproducing device reproduces information, by treating a predefined area in the second layer corresponding to a position of the first layer at which a defect is registered, as a defect area. The radial distance of the defect area is preferably greater than a bonding error between the first and second layers.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 2009Date of Patent: May 14, 2013Assignee: Hitachi Consumer Electronics Co., Ltd.Inventor: Takeshi Ogata

Patent number: 8411537Abstract: Various embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for data regeneration. For example, a system for regenerating data is disclosed. The system includes a media defect detector that is operable to identify a potential media defect associated with a medium from which an input signal is derived, an attenuation amplitude detector that generates an attenuation factor, and a data detector. The data detector includes a first data path and a second data path. The first data path includes a bank of two or more selectable noise prediction filters and the second data path includes a fixed noise prediction filter and the attenuation factor. The data detector processes a derivative of the input signal using the second data path when the potential media defect is indicated, and processes the derivative of the input signal using the first data path when a media defect is not indicated.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2009Date of Patent: April 2, 2013Assignee: Agere Systems Inc.Inventors: Weijun Tan, Kelly Fitzpatrick, Shaohua Yang

Patent number: 8400895Abstract: If a defective cluster in a spare area is managed with a defect entry, the size of a DFL will increase as the size of the spare area increases with an increase in the number of recording layers stacked in a disc. An information recording medium according to the present invention has pointer information indicating the location of the next available cluster in each spare area, and restricts the direction in which the spare area is used. Also, a defect entry indicating a defective cluster in the spare area is registered with the DFL. Thus, even if the size of the spare area 15 increases, the size of the DFL 21 can be kept relatively small. Furthermore, even after physical reformatting is done, a defective cluster, if any, in the spare area 15 can still be recognized as a defect and the control operation can be performed so that a replacement cluster is not re-allocated to that defective cluster (i.e., the defective cluster is not used).Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2010Date of Patent: March 19, 2013Assignee: Panasonic CorporationInventors: Yoshihisa Takahashi, Motoshi Ito
