  • Patent number: 8948080
Abstract: Systems and methods of satellite communications for moving terminals, including but not limited to on-the-move and mobile terminals (e.g., on-the-pause terminals), are implemented in certain embodiments using smaller antennas (e.g., aperture area with diameter less than 50 cm), open standard waveforms to secure availability from several suppliers, payment for service only when using the terminal, interference avoidance to adjacent satellites, and low cost. Low cost is achieved in part by operating at frequency bands that are currently operated by terrestrial microwave links so that existing low cost microwave components are utilized. The system also includes an interference elimination system that continuously monitors for interference to adjacent satellites from a user terminal's uplink signal.

Abstract: The present invention employs hierarchical modulation to simultaneously transmit information on different modulation layers using a carrier RF signal. Initially, first data to be transmitted is assigned to a first modulation layer and second data is assigned to a second modulation layer. In one embodiment of the present invention, the first and second data are assigned based on reliability criteria. The first and second modulation layers are hierarchical modulation layers of the carrier RF signal. Once assigned, the first data is transmitted using the first modulation layer of the carrier RF signal and the second data is transmitted using the second modulation layer of the carrier RF signal. In one embodiment of the present invention, information may be transmitted to one end user using one modulation layer, and information may be transmitted to a different end user using a different modulation layer.

  • Patent number: 8908669
Abstract: Time division multiplexed input signals (i.e., separated into time slots) are spread in each time slot with a destination code. This spreading is applied for destination identification as opposed to signal information modulation. Each spreading signal is associated with a particular destination for a particular time slot. These spread signals are then combined on a code division bus. Output signals for retransmission to the destinations are recovered from the bus by application of despreading codes. Each despread signal has a destination code which appears in its individual time slot. In a variant code division multiplexed signals are directed to a destination by use of time slot interchanger to achieve time division switching to route the CDMA multiplexed channels.

Abstract: Ambiguity (e.g., confusion) associated with access point identifiers may be resolved by querying candidate target access points and/or by using historical records indicative of one or more access points that the access point has previously accessed. For example, messages may be sent to access points that are assigned the same identifier to cause the access points to monitor for a signal from an access terminal that received the identifier from a target access point. The target access point may then be identified based on any responses that indicate that a signal was received from the access terminal. A mapping may be maintained for that access terminal that maps the identifier to that access point so that the mapping may be used to resolve any future confusion associated with the use of that identifier by that access terminal.

  • Patent number: 8730855
Abstract: A method for detecting a channel in a mixed-mode communications system is presented. The channel contains a primary synchronization pattern in a predetermined location within the channel. The primary synchronization pattern is compared against different predetermined channel synchronization patterns to detect a channel. Upon detection of the channel, a look-back channel detector confirms the existence of the channel by using the location of the primary synchronization pattern. Detection and confirmation of the channel may be employed simultaneously to each channel of a multiple-channel direct mode of operation signal. Audio holes may be eliminated in a 2:1 TDMA direct mode operation where both time slots contain signals from two different originating communication devices and the signals have different priority.

  • Patent number: 8724542
Abstract: A transmission of information within a wireless cellular network may include a first and second group of samples. A first group of samples is created comprising at least a first and a last subgroup, wherein the last subgroup is same as the first subgroup. A second group of samples created. A transformed set of samples produced by jointly transforming the created first and second group with a discrete Fourier transform (DFT). The transformed set of samples is expanded to produce an expanded set, and the expanded set is transformed with an inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) to produce an OFDM symbol with a fractional payload. The first group of samples is a reference signal (RS), which is known to the receiver before the transmission occurs, while the second group of samples is information data.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a method and system for transferring TDM services in GPON, the method includes the steps of: in the case of performing the GPON ranging process, buffering the uplink TDM service data received by an optical signal transceiver in an Input Buffer, reading out and transferring the uplink TDM service data buffered in an Output Buffer. The present invention eliminates the possible interruption of TDM services during the GPON ranging process by buffering the uplink services at the OLT and ONU/ONT side and relevant processes, and therefore realizes the TDM service transmission without any loss during the GPON system ranging process.

Abstract: A wireless star topology communication network is implemented in which a centrally located access point supports a very large number of fixed location nodes distributed over a large metropolitan area. Communication is by direct sequence spread spectrum modulating m-ary quadrature amplitude modulation symbols. The access point and all nodes are synchronized using GPS or other means to prevent data collisions. Multiple access is primarily based on signal propagation time between the access point and a node which allows nodes at different ranges to use the same direct sequence code.

  • Patent number: 8682292
Abstract: A GSM or UMTS mobile telecommunications network is disclosed. In addition to the conventional radio access network comprising the base stations, one or more additional access points are provided. An access point is connected to the network core by an IP transport broadband connection. The access point is configured to appear to the mobile terminal as a conventional base station—that is, it communicates with the mobile terminal using GSM or UMTS transport protocols and does not require any modification to a standard GSM or UMTS mobile terminal. Access Points are typically not under the direct control of the network provider. Arrangements are disclosed which allow the network provider to verify that the access point a mobile terminal is about to commence communicating through is at a particular location. Differential charging may be performed in dependence upon a subscriber's location.
