Abstract: It is possible to provide a wireless communication terminal, a handoff method in the wireless communication terminal, and a wireless communication system which can suppress the affect of an instantaneous disconnection in a hard handoff. The wireless communication terminal (10) includes a control unit (12) which executes a wireless communication by switching a frequency to be used by a communication unit (11). When the control unit (12) receives a search request which requests an acquisition of a handoff candidate frequency during a transmission of data formed by a plurality of continuous packets, the control unit (12) waits for completion of the transmission of the packets being transmitted. When the transmission is complete, the control unit (12) executes an inter-packet search process which controls the communication unit (11) to stop transmission of the subsequent packets and perform acquisition by switching from the currently used frequency to the handoff candidate frequency.

Abstract: A wireless terminal roams from a first access point to a second access point. The wireless terminal can set a predetermined time period to determine whether to roam between different access points. Upon receiving signals from the second access point, the wireless terminal decodes signals received from the first access point and the second access point to get a correct probability of each bit of the signals. The wireless terminal then calculates mean values, a variance value and a difference in the mean values of the first access point and the second access point. If the difference in the mean value exceeds a product of the variance value and a roaming weight, the wireless terminal switches the wireless terminal from the first access point to the second access point to access the network.

Abstract: Interference management may involve the transmission of interference management messages by wireless nodes that are experiencing interference and appropriate responses by potential interferers that receive the interference management messages. Upon detection of interfering signals, a wireless node may determine whether the signals are from a synchronous interferer or an asynchronous interferer. Based on this determination, the wireless node may use different types of signals to manage the different types of interference. In some aspects, asynchronous interference management may involve backing-off in frequency and/or in time in response to interference signals. Asynchronous interference management may involve transmitting back-off beacons to clear potential interferers from a given carrier. Here, the transmission of beacons by a wireless node may be metered to facilitate fair sharing of communication resources.

  • Patent number: 8462738
Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting a transport format resource combination (TFRC) using an information theoretic approach are provided. The TFRC may be selected in a medium access control (MAC) layer for transmission of data in a code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless communication system. The maximum number of spreading codes available for transmission and the set of possible TFRCs may be determined based on channel characteristics. For each transport block set size (TBSS) in the set of possible TFRCs, a TFRC is selected with the largest number of spreading codes within the maximum number of spreading codes for a corresponding minimum coding rate. The corresponding code rate for each selected TFRCs is compared to a threshold to select a corresponding type of modulation. One of the selected TFRCs is selected to be provided to the physical layer that best matches the CQI and maximizes the TBSS.

  • Patent number: 8463272
Abstract: An object of the invention is to provide a wireless communication system in which the load of each cell and interference between cells are taken into account. In a handover-candidate base station and a handover-source base station, parameters for interference-reducing scheduling and handover facilitating processing are adjusted based on the mutual load information. When the handover-candidate base station, to be used for load balancing, is a large-diameter cell, transmit power control and frequency scheduling are adjusted by taking account of the load state at a cell edge. When the handover-source base station has a small-diameter cell, the number of terminals to be handed over is adjusted by taking account of the load state of the handover-candidate base station. Thus, both of interference control and load balancing are achieved.

  • Patent number: 8456989
Abstract: During an initial part of a communication session, a transmitting node transmits digital data over a first air interface channel to a receiving node, using a first data rate and a first level of repetition. A degradation in quality of the communication session is detected. During a subsequent part of the communication session, the transmitting node transmits digital data over the first air interface channel as before but also transmits the digital data over a second air interface channel, using a second data rate and a second level of repetition. The second data rate is higher than the first data rate, and the second level of repetition is higher than the first level of repetition. Thus, during a given transmission period, the transmitting node may transmit a voice frame once over the first air interface channel and N times over the second air interface channel.

  • Patent number: 8451768
Abstract: A system, method, and apparatus are provided for a source to choose a partner/relay from at least one candidate to transmit at least part of a message from the source to destination. The choice depends on the channel conditions of the source and when the source is experiencing poor channel quality to the destination, the source selects the candidate and the modulation modes of the source and partner/relay such that the frame error rate (FER) of the source is lowered. Otherwise, a modulation mode is selected for each of the source and the partner/relay that most improves the gain in throughput of the source. The present invention applies to modes consisting of binary phase shift keying (BPSK), quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), and 16-state quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM).

  • Patent number: 8442538
Abstract: For Wireless Communications Networks (WCNs) that support soft handover, cooperator receiver selection for a TDOA, AOA, TDOA/AOA, or hybrid network-based or network-overlay Wireless Location System (WLS) must contend with one or more network base stations as a serving cell. When the active set contains more than one member, two techniques for determining a set of cooperating and demodulating receivers to use in the signal collection for location estimation is disclosed. In one embodiment, the active set members are constructively reduced to a single member that is used as a proxy serving cell. In another embodiment, the information contained in the active set membership is retained and a new set of demodulating and cooperator receivers are generated based on the entire membership of the active set.

Abstract: A method, apparatus and computer program product are provided for supplying information regarding a neighbor cell following cell reselection in a manner that reduces the signaling load on the network and conserves battery consumption by a mobile terminal. In this regard, the method, apparatus and computer program product do not blindly provide information regarding a neighbor cell that the current cell has already collected, but, instead, first determines if the neighbor information regarding a prior cell is different than and therefore will add to the information regarding neighbor cells that is already maintained by the current cell. Only after making such a determination may a mobile terminal signal the current cell as to the availability of neighbor information regarding a prior cell.

  • Patent number: 8428017
Abstract: When a high SIR can be achieved for downlink data transmission, for example in a MIMO system, or when higher order modulation, such as 64 QAM, can be used, it is desired to measure the instantaneous downlink channel quality indicator (CQI), and report the measured CQI to the network using the same number of bits as when a lower SIR can be achieved. In order to do this, a true CQI is derived based upon at least one network controlled parameter and a measured channel quality parameter; and the true CQI value is scaled to a new CQI value such that the new CQI will fall within a specified range of CQI values; so that the new CQI achieved by scaling the derived CQI value can be reported with every CQI value over the entire reporting range requiring the same number of bits.
