Abstract: A Bluetooth host solves the aforementioned problems by evaluating a Bluetooth service provider server ID and by determining which of a plurality of access IDs map to the server ID and, correspondingly, providing a Bluetooth access ID that corresponds thereto. Accordingly, one Bluetooth host may readily gain access to any one of a plurality of different devices and different types of devices. Additionally, the Bluetooth host includes capacity to store and provide additional supporting information according to the type of device that is the Bluetooth service provider. Generally, the Bluetooth host stores a plurality of access or link IDs in relation to a plurality of master device IDs and, upon detecting a beacon, determines what access or link ID to provide and whether to provide additional stored information.

Abstract: A system and method for sending long distance telephone calls over the Internet utilizes cost and quality of service data to optimize system performance and to minimize the cost of completing the calls. The system utilizes a network of gateways connected to the Internet. The gateways receive calls from various service providers and convert the analog calls into data packets which are then placed onto the Internet. Similarly, the gateways take data packets off the Internet, convert the data packets back into analog format, and provide the analog telephone calls to the same or another service provider. Then system periodically checks the quality of communications between each of the gateways, and uses this information, in combination with cost information, to determine how to route the calls over the Internet. Special addressing protocols can be used by a system embodying the invention to reduce or eliminate unnecessary signaling between gateways as call setup procedures are carried out.

Abstract: Communication networks and methods are disclosed that provide call delivery to a dual mode wireless device served by a wireless data network (e.g., WiFi/IMS network) and a wireless voice network (e.g., cellular network). A call control function in the wireless data network is adapted to receive a call to the dual mode wireless device. The call control function transmits a ping message to the dual mode wireless device over the wireless data network to determine if the device is available over the wireless data network for the call. If the call control function receives a response to the ping message from the device, then the call control function attempts to set up the call over the wireless data network. If the call control function does not receive a response to the ping message, then the call control function may attempt to set up the call over the wireless voice network.

Abstract: There is provided a wireless communication method, a wireless communication system, a base station and a mobile station which conduct wireless communication using an OFDM modulation scheme. The base station transmits a timing correction burst to the mobile station only when a correlation peak detected from a received OFDM symbol is within a predetermined timing detection range. If the timing correction burst is not introduced from the base station even after expiration of predetermined time duration, by copying a signal by a length different from a guard interval from the end of an effective symbol and adding the copied signal to the front of the effective symbol, the mobile station generates a new timing correction channel (second time), in which transmission timing of a previously generated timing correction channel is shifted.

For example, in one method, a frame and an associated frame header are received at a switching fabric stage. The associated frame header includes a first field and a second field. The method selects one or more fabric points of exit within the switching fabric stage, based on the second field. The first field is used to select one or more other fabric points of exit within another switching fabric stage, and thus two different fields within the associated frame header specify fabric points of exit. The method then sends the frame to the selected fabric points of exit within the switching fabric stage.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for adjusting a timer mechanism based on radio frequency (RF) conditions of a network connecting source and destination devices are provided. Initially, data packets transmitted by the source device are assigned an ordering. This ordering is compared to an actual order in which the data packets are received at the destination device to ascertain whether any data packets were missing due to RF conditions. A negative response indicating missing, or lost, data packets may be returned, thereby invoking the source device to retransmit the data packets identified as missing. The device(s) may compute a probability of packet-loss (utilizing a recorded history of the transmitted packets in conjunction with the data packets actually received) and utilize the packet-loss probability to dynamically tune a time-interval of the timer mechanism. Abstract: A method (and corresponding equipment) for use by a device (10) in establishing a network connection on behalf of an application (14a-d) hosted by the device (10), including: a step (23b) of obtaining information about currently active cellular network systems, which may include information about connections currently in use; and a step (24) of deciding whether to allow establishing the connection based on factors including the information about currently active cellular network systems. The information about connections currently in use may include identifiers for applications using the connections currently in use. The factors can also include the identity of the application making the request and the identities of the applications using connections currently in use, so as to make the decision as to whether or not to allow establishing the connection after taking into account the importance and type of the different applications contending for the network resources (connections).

  • Patent number: 8244531
Abstract: A method is disclosed that enables the handling of audio streams for segments in the audio that might contain private information, in a way that is more straightforward than in some techniques in the prior art. The data-processing system of the illustrative embodiment receives a media stream that comprises an audio stream, possibly in addition to other types of media such as video. The audio stream comprises audio content, some of which can be private in nature. Once it receives the data, the data-processing system then analyzes the audio stream for private audio content by using one or more techniques that involve looking for private information as well as non-private information. As a result of the analysis, the data-processing system omits the private audio content from the resulting stream that contains the processed audio.

  • Patent number: 8243630
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for implementing an application-level routing protocol for multiparty audio-video conferencing. In one implementation, application-level per-stream routing techniques separately control audio data and video data between conference members hosted on a network. Different audio application-level multicast (ALM) trees are generated by each member, are dynamically updated according to shortest-path-first selection of data delivery paths, and are used to send audio data to the other members of the videoconference. Likewise, different video ALM trees are generated by each member, are dynamically updated according to broadest-path-first selection of data delivery paths, and are used to send video data to the other members of the videoconference. Separate audio and video ALM trees for each member can utilize IP multicast in segments of the network in which IP multicast is enabled.

Abstract: Described is a node comprising a switch fabric and first and second ingress modules. The first ingress module receives a first stream of packets from a first physical path through the network; forwards a copy of the first stream of packets to an intermodule communication channel; selects packets from the first stream of packets and a copy of a second stream of packets for forwarding to the switch fabric. The second ingress module receives the second stream of packets from a second physical path through the network; forwards the copy of the second stream of packets to the intermodule communication channel; and selects packets from the copy of the first stream of packets and the second stream of packets for forwarding to the switch fabric based on sequence numbers in the packets.

  • Patent number: 8233591
Abstract: The present invention provides a technique for providing a forced hold service such as is used for an emergency services call, which is supported at least in part over a packet network. The forced hold service acts to effectively hold a connection for the call with a called party, even when the caller takes an action that would normally end a call, such as going on hook, pressing end, or the like. When the caller takes an action that would normally end the call, the forced hold service allows the caller to automatically reconnect to the emergency services provider over the held connection upon going offhook, pressing send, or the like. Alternatively, the emergency services provider can effectively re-engage the call wherein the caller is reconnected over the held connection upon going offhook, pressing send, or the like.

  • Patent number: RE43566
Abstract: A method and apparatus provide reserved bandwidth and QOS/COS virtual circuit connections in a network using both conventional and novel reservation protocols and frame formats. An apparatus according to the invention includes an enterprise control point that communicates with switches via a reserved signaling channel. The switches have been upgraded or replaced to include enhanced functionality. The enhanced switches detect packets that include requests for reserved connections according to existing reservation protocols such as RSVP and IEEE 802.1P/Q. Such detected packets are forwarded to the enterprise control point for processing via a reserved signaling channel. The enterprise control point identifies a path within the network that can satisfy the requested QOS/COS and reserves the requested resources all along the path from beginning to end.
