  • Patent number: 8531961
Abstract: Systems and methods for optimizing system performance of capacity and spectrum constrained, multiple-access communication systems by selectively discarding packets are provided. The systems and methods provided herein can drive changes in the communication system using control responses. One such control responses includes the optimal discard (also referred to herein as “intelligent discard”) of network packets under capacity constrained conditions. The systems and methods prioritize packets and make discard decisions based upon the prioritization. Some embodiments provide an interactive response by selectively discarding packets to enhance perceived and actual system throughput, other embodiments provide a reactive response by selectively discarding data packets based on their relative impact to service quality to mitigate oversubscription, others provide a proactive response by discarding packets based on predicted oversubscription, and others provide a combination thereof.

  • Patent number: 8488459
Abstract: For Quality of Service (QoS) implementation in a multiple-access communication system, a base station processes data transmissions from terminals for all QoS classes supported by the system and obtains status information for the data transmissions. The status information may indicate whether each packet is decoded correctly or in error and the delay for each packet. For each QoS class, the base station derives one or more metrics based on the status information for data transmissions from disadvantaged terminals and updates the QoS parameter based on the metrics and requirements for the QoS class. The QoS parameter for each QoS class determines the transmit powers for the data transmissions sent for that QoS class. The base station broadcasts the QoS parameters for all QoS classes. Each terminal uses the QoS parameter for an applicable QoS class for power control of the data transmission sent to the base station.

  • Patent number: 8472313
Abstract: Optical bypass circuits are selected and created with a desired amount of traffic on each circuit to offload from the IP routers, the maximum possible amount of traffic. In a first phase, each node in a network independently determines the maximum number of optical bypass circuits, configured to their maximum capacity, to as many destinations, that could possibly originate at that node. The determination is made by aggregating traffic from a given traffic matrix. The optical bypass circuit transports traffic that originates at the node plus transient traffic that the node receives from other nodes. In the second phase, the node will eliminate an optical bypass circuit found in the first phase if any of its parent nodes created a necessarily longer optical bypass circuit to the same destination. In addition, if a descendent node has more aggregate traffic to fill more bypass circuits than the parent node, then the extra optical bypass circuits from the descendent node are also created.

  • Patent number: 8472416
Abstract: A system and method are provided for maintaining a hybrid coordinator (HC) in a wireless communications local area network (LAN). The method comprises: a station (STA) seeking a guaranteed quality of service (QoS); establishing a basic service set (BSS) through association with an access point (AP); the AP selecting a HC from STAs in the BSS; the AP broadcasting the HC information to STAs in the BSS; and, the STA initiating a transmission specification (TSPEC) with the HC. In one aspect, selecting an HC from STAs in the first BSS includes integrating the HC function into the AP. Then, a STA seeking a guaranteed quality of service (QoS): receives a broadcast message including a list of potential APs; and, communicates with an AP from the broadcast list. If the STA is unable to communicate with an established AP, then it instantiates a BSS with itself as the AP.

Abstract: A method and system and computer readable medium for a voice quality measuring device that provides real-time, near real-time or contemporaneous voice quality statistics about impairments external to the voice quality conference bridge system, i.e. from participant's calls coming from a communication network into a voice quality conference bridge system is disclosed. The reports generated by the voice quality statistics provided by the voice quality measuring device will enable carriers to identify voice quality impairments. Moreover, the reports will also enable the customers to see, by means of the voice quality statistics, on a call-by-call basis, whether any voice quality impairments are external to the conferencing bridge system.

  • Patent number: 8462634
Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and computer-readable storage media for managing a packet network to deal with a problem of dropped audio packets. A triggering event signal indicates that audio marked packet traffic in the packet network has exceeded a capacity limit. Upon receiving the triggering event signal, a transmitting device transmits audio packets marked as non-audio packets through the packet network. The transmitting device, for example, is a VoIP telephone. The triggering event signal, for example, is generated when the audio marked packet traffic exceeds a dropped packet threshold, or when monitoring of audio marked packet traffic indicates that audio marked packet traffic approaches a committed data rate (CDR) threshold.

Abstract: Method, apparatus, and computer program product embodiments are disclosed to improve network performance for ad hoc network initiation. Example embodiments include a new operational sequence for wireless devices initiating the use of an ad hoc network. The example embodiments require appropriately enabled wireless devices to only respond to probe request frames from other similarly appropriately enabled wireless devices. In this manner, two devices may avoid the time consuming effort of combining two different ad hoc networks into a single ad hoc network so that the two devices can communicate.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for transmitting, over a wireless link, video that is coded in multiple layers such that higher priority for the use of the transmission resources may be given to the lower layers of the layered video stream. The level of priority is signified by the session identification parameters, i.e., by the source and destination ip addresses and port numbers. These parameters are assigned to the base layer and to the one or more additional layers, respectively, such that at least two of said layers are assigned different parameter sets. At least the base layer is then transmitted on the wireless link.

  • Patent number: RE44435
Abstract: Packet communication method and system in which a packet destined for a terminal is provided service according to a service table indexed by packet classification and the terminal's power mode. The service table may specify for a connection a predetermined quality of service or discarding the packet. For a power mode having an alerting (i.e., paging) mechanism, the service may include alerting the terminal. The service table may also include a network edge point's own service requests and service requests from terminals, provisioning servers, and handoff sources. For a multicast or broadcast packet, as each terminal may be in a different power mode, the associated service in the service table may therefore be different for each terminal. In that case, the packet is provided with service so that any given terminal is provided with at least the quality of service specified in the service table. Thus, a multicast or broadcast packet is discarded when the service specified for all terminals is “discard.
