Based On Traffic Contract (including Using Setup Messages, Qos, Delay/bandwidth Requirement) Patents (Class 370/395.21)
  • Patent number: 8638735
Abstract: Quality of Service (QoS) and/or bandwidth allocation can be provided for interactive gaming via a Regional/Access Network (RAN). The RAN can provide end-to-end transport between a Gaming Application Service Provider (GASP) and a Customer Premises Network (CPN) that includes a Routing Gateway (RG). Quality of Service (QoS) and/or bandwidth allocation can be provided by determining different levels of subscription service for different subscribers to an interactive game between a plurality of participants. Different QoS and/or bandwidth allocations can be provided to different gaming traffic flows associated with the different subscribers to the interactive game based on the different levels of subscription service of the different subscribers.

  • Patent number: 8634422
Abstract: This disclosure is directed to packet scheduling techniques for prioritizing packets in the first generation (1X) evolution data optimized (EV-DO) network or similar networks that do not provide quality of service (QoS) support at the media access control (MAC) level. The techniques make use of a plurality of prioritized queues that are organized into packet flows. The different packet flows associate packets having similar or identical radio link protocols (RLPs) in order to achieve the necessary error detection for such related packets. The different queues define packet priorities base on packet type, in order to give transmission priority to certain types of packets over other types of packets. By separating the packets into different prioritized queues and associating several queues into common packet flows, prioritization can be achieved along with an efficient implementation of different error detection schemes.

  • Patent number: 8634423
Abstract: Methods and media are provided for allowing WiMAX device users varying levels of Quality of Service (QoS) based on the network service provider ID (NSPID) present on the device. A user's authentication request can be routed based on the NSPID, thus ensuring certain prescribed QoS levels. The QoS level could be varied over time as requested by the user. Guarantee of the QoS levels can be accomplished by dedicating network resources, such as the number of servers, the quality of servers, or the bandwidth allocated. Utilizing the NSPID to route the user prior to authentication also improves latency time for user-authentication requests and improves traffic flow across the network by reducing the need to reroute.

  • Patent number: 8634431
Abstract: In controlling data packet transmission for a passive optical network, a controller provides memory access and flow control of packet data from a host memory to an external optical network device, such as an optical line termination, optical network unit, or optical network termination. The controller is programmed to control packet data flow through the transmission buffer by resizing the transmission buffer to compensate for increases or decreases in bandwidth demand. For example, the transmission buffer may include a plurality of FIFOs, each of a different transmission container type and each capable of having a different bandwidth allocation, which allocation is changed by the controller in response any one of the FIFO's usage levels increasing above a high threshold or decreasing below a low threshold.

In an exemplary embodiment, the present invention provides several methods of automatically carving Optical channel Data Tributary Unit Group (ODTUG) structures down to a desired ODUk layer during end-to-end circuit setup. These methods may include a recursively descending algorithm, an iterative array algorithm, and an ordered linked list algorithm. Additionally, to interoperate with network elements which may have a fixed ODTUG structure within an Optical channel Transport Unit (OTU), a method of policy enforcement describing each ODUk layer mapped into ODTUG structures is used to select a best match of the currently provisioned ODUk layers.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention are directed to characterizing reliability associated with a network. To characterize the reliability, an edge-pair reliability metric is determined for service edge point pairs. An end-to-end reliability metric is computed based on a distribution of the edge-pair reliability metric for the service edge point pairs and a threshold value.

  • Patent number: 8548325
Abstract: A system, device, and method for supporting cut-through pats in an optical communication system involves obtaining hop count and quality of service information by an initiating device and using the hop count and quality of service information by the initiating device to make decisions relating to a cut-through path. The hop count and quality of service information is provided in a reply message that is sent by a terminating device and modified by intermediate devices between the initiating device and the terminating device. The terminating device sends the reply with a hop count equal to one and quality of service information for a first link (hop) toward the initiating device. Each intermediate device increments the hop count in the reply and adds quality of service information for a next link (hop) into the reply.

  • Patent number: 8547875
Abstract: The approach for managing the topology in a MANET includes, at the network layer of a wireless mobile node, operating a link state or other routing protocol to discover routes from the at least one wireless node to other wireless nodes within the MANET. The routing protocol includes the use of a global topology database storing global network topology information. The method also includes, at the network layer, providing the global network topology information from the global topology database of the routing protocol to the MAC sublayer. Also, at the data link layer, the MAC sublayer is controlled to perform neighbor connection management based upon the global network topology information from the global topology database. The approach may provide enhanced QoS, latency and resistance to link and node failures within MANETs.

  • Patent number: 8547840
Abstract: Bandwidth is allocated by leveraging a bursty characteristic of data transmission signals to efficiently utilize network resources. Network performance is observed over a time period to identify patterns of data transmission rates as different signals are processed. To compensate for the fact that different jobs/tasks peak at different times, the total bandwidth limit may be increased by a scaling factor. The scaling factor is calculated using information obtained by observing network performance during the time period. The scaling factor is used to increase the total bandwidth available for all jobs/tasks executing during the time period without exceeding any bandwidth limits. The data transmission rate of each job/task may then be adjusted to utilize the newly available bandwidth.

  • Patent number: 8542588
Abstract: A device or chip can be designed and/or programmed to select different sets of wireless link rate determination operations that account for different degrees of presentation time sensitivity that correspond to different classes of traffic. The device or chip can infer or explicitly determine presentation time sensitivity based, at least in part, on traffic class. The selected wireless link rate operations select link rates for the different classes of traffic. A first set of the wireless link rate determination operations can choose a smoother and more stable wireless link rate for the wireless traffic class that conveys presentation time sensitive content. A second of the wireless link rate determination operations can choose a fastest possible wireless link rate, which may be more susceptible to jitter and delay, for a traffic class that is less sensitive.

  • Patent number: 8542579
Abstract: User cooperation in wireless networks implemented on the Network Protocol layer level attains a higher stable throughput and improved transmission delay. The cooperation is designed between a set of source user nodes transmitting to a common destination, where users with channels providing a higher successful delivery probability, in addition to their own traffic, relay packets of other source users whose transmissions to the destination fails. Each source user node is provided with an ample queue buffer having capacity to accumulate packets inadvertently received from other users in the system in addition to its own packets. Ranking mechanism facilitates in determining the “quality” of wireless channels, and the Acknowledgement mechanism facilitates in coordination of the transmissions in the system. The nodes exchange information on the queues status, and decision is made by a scheduling controller on the priority of transmission.

  • Patent number: 8537829
Abstract: This disclosure relates to a system and method for providing a mechanism control page requests sent in a wireless communication network. The paging control mechanism can be implemented in a gateway through a combination of hardware and software to determine whether packets received at a gateway trigger a page. The packets received at the gateway are intended for user equipment that is indicated to be in an idle state with no bearer connection. The paging mechanism controls paging when paging requests need to be sent. In some communication networks, page requests can be sent that are not needed because a bearer connection or link is in the process of being established. The control can be asserted by adding intelligence to the gateway to determine—on receipt of downlink data or signaling—how to proceed based on the state of the user equipment and the bearer connection.
