Abstract: A backoff counter is used to determine the start time of a contended allocation for a device. The backoff counter is set to an integer randomly drawn from the interval [1, CW], where CW is a contention window value selected based upon the priority of the traffic to be transmitted. The backoff counter is decremented for each idle contention slot detected. When the backoff counter reaches zero, the device attempts to transmit in the next contention slot. If the device receives no acknowledgement or an incorrect acknowledgment, then the transmission has failed. After a failed transmission, CW is set by alternately doubling the CW value up to a CWmax value for the user priority. CW is unchanged, if it was doubled in the last setting; and CW is doubled, if it was unchanged in the last setting.

  • Patent number: 8306053
Abstract: An arbitration mechanism provides quality of service guarantees for time-sensitive signals sharing a local area computer network with non-time-sensitive traffic. Device adapters are placed at all access points to an Ethernet network. The device adapters limit admission rates and control the timing of all packets entering the network. By doing so, collisions are eliminated for timesensitive traffic, thereby guaranteeing timely delivery. A common time reference is established for the device adapters. The time reference includes a frame with a plurality of phases. Each of the phases is assigned to a device adapter. Each device adapter is allowed to transmit packets of data onto the network only during the phase assigned thereto. The length of the phases may be modified in accordance with the number of packets to be transmitted by a particular device adapter. A master device adapter may be appointed to synchronize each of the device adapters.

Abstract: A packet switch issues credits to a link partner based on credit values and updates the credit values to indicate credits consumed by the link partner based on packets received from the link partner by the ingress port. Additionally, the packet switch selects credit threshold values corresponding to a transmission period of imminent credit starvation of the link partner and compares the updated credit values with the credit threshold values. The packet switch issues additional credits to the link partner when at least one of the updated credit values has reached a corresponding credit threshold value. In some embodiments, the packet switch also issues additional credits to the link partner during idle transmission periods.

Abstract: System and method for controlling access to a bus. A Network Interface (NI) is coupled to a memory via the bus, and receives a schedule to a Direct Memory Access (DMA) controller on the NI. The schedule indicates one or more timeslots reserved for transmission of deterministic data, and further indicates one or more available timeslots which are not reserved for transmission of deterministic data. The NI receives first data for transmission onto the bus, during a first timeslot of the available timeslots, where the first data are received in a non-deterministic manner, and determines that the first timeslot is a reserved timeslots based on the schedule. The first data are buffered in a buffer memory during the first timeslot, and transferred to the first memory via the bus during a second timeslot after the buffering, where the second timeslot is one of the one or more available timeslots.

  • Patent number: 8289989
Abstract: A packet switch includes an arbiter that generates an availability signal indicating whether one or more pseudo-ports are available for receiving data. Each pseudo-port identifies one or more output ports of the packet switch. An input port of the packet switch receives data of a data packet, generates a grant request identifying a pseudo-port, and issues the grant request to a grant request filter. The grant request filter determines based on the availability signal whether the grant request is serviceable by the packet switch. If the grant request is a serviceable grant request, the grant request filter issues the grant request to the arbiter. The arbiter can select the serviceable grant request and issue a grant to the input port. The data of the data packet can then be routed from the input port to each output port identified by the pseudo-port.

  • Patent number: 8284660
Abstract: Scheduling real-time Quality of Service (QoS) data flows in a large-scale wireless communications system uses credit allocation to active QoS flows based on quality-of-service weights, and the credits are measured in dimensionless units of air interface slot capacity. Scheduling addresses inactive QoS flows with no data pending for transmission that may accumulate up to a burst credits limit based upon a fair share of all credits that would be allocated in a 100% busy system. Intermittent flows such as echo requests or keyboard input can thereby get immediate service by using their burst credits. The flow with the highest credit accumulation is serviced first and may use up to a full time slot (or system quanta) of air interface time reducing header encapsulation overhead when payload sizes (and spectral efficiency) are low. Additive and multiplicative aspects age the negative credits back to zero whenever a flow overspends its credit allocation.

Abstract: An approach for allocating resources to an apparatus based on suspendable resource requirements generally involves a resource allocator determining that a particular resource requirement for an apparatus is to no longer be satisfied, such as for a suspendable resource requirement. The resource allocator de-allocates the one or more resources that satisfy the particular resource requirement from the apparatus. The resource allocator obtains and stores state information for a de-allocated resource so that another resource, which may or may not be the same as the resource that was de-allocated, can be allocated to the apparatus based on the stored state information with an acceptable loss of state.

Abstract: According to embodiments described in the specification, a method and apparatus for managing a call to a user associated with a destination communications device, the call initiated by a caller at an originating communications device, is described. An indication of the call is received, the indication of the call comprising data associated with the user. A state of the user is determined by processing the data associated with the user and consulting a record of the state of the user. The call is parked if the state of the user comprises a delayed answer state, the delayed answer state comprising the user being available to receive the call, but requiring additional time to retrieve the call using the destination communications device, and a notification of the call is triggered at the destination communications device by transmitting a signal to the address of the communications device.

Abstract: The present invention is related to methods, apparatuses, systems and computer software for determining an amount of physical resources for downlink transmission, and allocating uplink physical resources for transmission of data-non-associated control signaling based at least on the amount of physical resources for downlink transmission. The amount of physical resources for downlink transmission comprises an amount of downlink control signaling. The present invention further relates to a framework for mapping the dedicated uplink control channels directly to single physical resource blocks. The framework is able to efficiently shift physical resources to and from the uplink control channel for ACK/NACK reports, in a data-non-associated control signaling scheme and on a per subframe basis. The present invention is also concerned with scheduler, for example an eNodeB scheduler, which uses its scheduling history and knowledge of user equipment capabilities to increase utilization of uplink resources.

  • Patent number: 8169926
Abstract: Enhanced channel changing within multi-channel communication systems. A CMTS directs channel changing of a CM, sometimes between upstream data bursts. Logical channels, part of a single frequency channel, may be used, and the channel changing may be performed between those logical channels. Multiple upstream burst profiles and/or modulation densities may be used providing high degrees of robustness, fidelity, and throughput and allowing great channel flexibility. A CM may be switched between channels without losing transmitter capability. Even if some throughput rate may be sacrificed during the channel changing, the CM will still be able to continue data throughput. Then, the new channel may then undergo the initialization and ranging processes thereby enabling greater throughput on that new channel. After undergoing the initialization and ranging processes, the new channel will then be a fully equivalent member of the CM communication system.

Abstract: A medium-reservation mechanism improves transmission efficiency in a multiple-channel network that includes stations with limited-selectivity receivers. The mechanism employs a medium-request signal that conveys channel information. In this network, stations check the channel information in the medium-request signal to decide whether or not to comply with the medium-request signal. If the channel information identifies the channel that is close to the channel that the station is presently operating on, the station then complies with the medium-request signal. If the channel information identifies a channel other than the channel that the station is presently operating on, the station ignores the medium-request signal.
