  • Patent number: 8144707
Abstract: A method and a system for determining the existence of broadcast/multicast frames buffered in an access point (AP) are used to avoid wakening a station (STA) unnecessarily. The method includes: when receiving broadcast/multicast frames sent from a service network and/or multicast group, an AP sets a broadcast/multicast indication bit that associates the service network and/or multicast group to the valid state and sends frames that carry the broadcast/multicast indication bit to a STA; the STA determines whether there are broadcast/multicast frames buffered in the AP according to the associated service network and/or multicast group and the received broadcast/multicast indication bit. Embodiments of the present disclosure also disclose an AP and a STA. The AP can identify whether there are broadcast/multicast frames buffered in an AP.

  • Patent number: 8130719
Abstract: An access node anchoring a connection to, e.g., a PDSN in a core network establishes a session with a mobile station and assigns the mobile station an identifier such as a UATI. The anchor node sends the UATI to the PDSN, such as in a GRE key where the data link is a GRE tunnel. If the anchor node fails and data addressed to the mobile station comes to the PDSN, it may initiate a page for the mobile using the UATI. The anchor node may additionally send the PDSN the session seed and optionally the mobile station's network location. A registration zone may be defined to include access nodes within a predetermined distance of the anchor node, and the mobile station forced to re-register when moving outside of the registration zone. In this case, the PDSN may initiate a page for the mobile station only within the registration zone.

  • Patent number: 8121145
Abstract: The method and apparatus described herein controls transmission from a plurality of user terminals to an access point on a random access channel in a wireless communication system. An access point determines an allowed information rate for each user terminal and transmits a rate control parameter indicative of the allowed information rates to the user terminals. The access point also computes a packet transmission probability and transmits the packet transmission probability to the use terminals on a common control channel. The packet transmission probability controls the number of user terminals that transmit in a given time slot to reduce collisions and increase the departure rate. The user terminals selectively transmit one or more packets to the access point in a time slot on the random access channel based on the allowed information rate and the packet transmission probability.

  • Patent number: 8069248
Abstract: An 802.11 source station transmits a signal with the duration field other than that required for the transmission to prevent transmission by other stations during known sequences. Thus, the source station uses the duration field to spoof the actual time the medium will be occupied, to stations within range of the signal. A station within range of the transmitted signal will check the duration field of the transmitted signal, and update the station's network allocation vector. Thus, the station will not transmit because the station's network allocation vector indicates that the medium is in use, even though the station maybe unable to hear the carrier. Accordingly, spoofed stations may, for example, 1) delay transmission until a more critical transmission has completed, 2) allow unknown or foreign protocol to have preferential use of the medium, 3) prevent interference from hidden stations, and 4) allow sharing of the medium by overlapping basic service sets.

Abstract: A technique is provided for determining estimated location of a wireless communication device (WCD) in a network. A first AP transmits a first RSSI data request message, including a BSSID to the WCD at a first time over a radio channel. The WCD then transmits a first response message to the first AP, which then transmits a first measured RSSI value to a trilateration engine (TE). At a different, second time, a second AP can switch to the radio channel and transmit a second RSSI data request message that includes the BSSID of first AP to the WCD over the radio channel. In response, the WCD transmits a second response message to the second AP, which then transmits a second measured RSSI value to the TE. A third AP performs a similar message exchange. This technique collects RSSI information from the WCD at the APs without disrupting any of their connections.

  • Patent number: 7990952
Abstract: A traffic prioritization system and method performs a coarse classification of upstream bursts at the physical interface of a wireless communications device. The wireless device monitors and controls communications with a plurality of remote wireless communications devices throughout a widely distributed network, including the Internet. The traffic prioritization system includes a burst receiver that receives and sends the upstream bursts to a classifier. At an appropriate time, the classifier receives the upstream bursts and queries a priority lookup table (LUT) to determine a priority classification. The priority classification is used to separate the bursts into two or more priority levels. The higher priority level is used to designate services having a low tolerance for delay, such as telephony. Upon classification, the upstream bursts are forwarded to one of several priority queues. Each priority queue corresponds to at least one priority level.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for arbitrating prioritized cycle streams in a manner that prevents starvation. High priority and low priority arbitration pools are employed for arbitrating multiple input cycle streams. Each cycle stream contains a stream of requests of a given type and associated priority. Under normal circumstances in which resource buffer availability for a destination device is not an issue, higher priority streams are provided grants over lower priority streams, with all streams receiving grants. However, when a resource buffer is not available for a lower priority stream, arbitration of high priority streams with available buffer resources are redirected to the low priority arbitration pool, resulting in generation of grant counts for both the higher and lower priority streams.

Abstract: The terminal device has a network transceiver and a processor having a first program to cause the processor to transmit a packet of data using the network transceiver in accordance with a data transmission protocol. The first program begins transmission of a packet by sending data to a transmit signal input of the network transceiver in accordance with the protocol. At a circuit level associated with the network transceiver, a received signal in the transceiver is detected at a time of sending data to the transmit signal input. In response to this detection, transmission of the packet is prevented.
