Abstract: Improvements are disclosed for in-band signaling, i.e., transmission of data in a voice channel of a digital wireless network during a voice call session. A family of narrow-band signaling methods is disclosed to successfully pass data-carrying signals through the low-bit rate modes of the EVRC-B vocoder commonly used in CDMA wireless channels. Some embodiments generate a tapered signaling waveform in tandem with another waveform using FSK-modulation. These features can be used in cell phones or other wireless communication devices, including automotive applications.

  • Patent number: 7953047
Abstract: Techniques to parse data into multiple (M) streams with selectable data rates are described. The modulation scheme and code rate for each stream are determined based on the data rate selected for that stream. The modulation schemes and code rates for all M streams are used to determine a parse cycle and the number of puncture cycles for each stream in the parse cycle. A sequence of puncture cycles is formed for the M streams such that the puncture cycle(s) for each stream are distributed as evenly as possible across the sequence. An encoder encodes traffic data in accordance with a base code (e.g., a rate 1/2 binary convolutional code) and generates code bits. A parser then parses the code bits into the M streams based on the sequence of puncture cycles, one puncture cycle at a time and in the order indicated by the sequence.

  • Patent number: 7787376
Abstract: A communication unit, which includes a modem unit, performs communications with a targeted radio by setting a communication rate variably. A control unit acquires a delay characteristic in a radio channel between the communication unit and the targeted radio apparatus and an error vector by the radio channel. As the communication rate, the control unit determines a coding rate of error correction and a modulation scheme, based on the acquired delay characteristic and the error vector. In particular, the control unit determines the coding rate based on the delay characteristic and determines the modulation scheme based on the error vector.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method of terminal PTT registration based on CDMA trunking system and the system thereof, comprising: a user terminal is powered and a normal CDMA registration flow is completed, and afterwards the value of a PTT registration message counter is initialized; the user terminal sends a PTT registration message to a dispatching sub-system (server) and starts a PTT registration timer; and a corresponding process is performed according to the response message from the dispatching server, which is the reception of the trunking registration or the rejection of the trunking registration. Therefore the terminal with CDMA trunking function can avoid the problem caused by a failed PTT registration.

Abstract: A challenging problem is maintaining low power consumption in multi-channel (MC) systems, where multiple input signals demand several front-end analog signal-processing blocks to be replicated. A code-division multiplexing (CDM) system can be generalized as a signal compression-decompression involving an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). This invention utilizes CDM in MC front-end integrated circuits to significantly reduce the power consumption of such systems. The invention also extends CDM's data compression advantages to uncorrelated and weakly correlated MC signals through the introduction of a new Multi-Channel Signal Binning and Multiplexing (MCSBM) method and architecture. The proposed method achieves significant reductions in power consumption in comparison to a conventional time-division multiplexing quantizer, while adding only a modest amount of overhead and complexity.

  • Patent number: 7760697
Abstract: A first node seeking entry into a secure spread spectrum communications network sends a discovery burst at a low rate, and sends traffic bursts at a higher rate to exchange data rate for range. A receiving node receives discovery bursts via an omni-directional link and transmits and receives traffic bursts via directional links. As a node within the network detects a fading signal, it transmits a discovery burst at low rate on both its uplink and downlink channels. Other nodes may reply via the original uplink channel, and the fading node updates a list of candidate nodes through which it can relay through the network to its intended recipient by reversing the link direction of its original uplink and original downlink channels.

  • Patent number: 7746805
Abstract: In a communication network which performs transmission from a plurality of first communication devices to a single second communication device using a synchronous code division multiplexing technique, the phases of signals transmitted from the first communication devices are synchronized easily. The first communication devices control the transmission phase of spread modulated signals using phase control information received from the second communication device. A repeater generates a code division multiplexed signal by superposing the spread modulated signals transmitted respectively from the first transmission devices. The second transmission device demultiplexes the code division multiplexed signal received from the repeater, determines the optimum phase of the demultiplexed signals, and transmits the determined optimum phase to the first transmission devices as the phase control information.

  • Patent number: 7746830
Abstract: A subscriber access unit includes a transceiver for providing wireless communication of digital signals. The digital signals are communicated to a base station using at least one radio frequency (RF) channel via Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) modulated radio signals defined by orthogonal codes. Orthogonal subchannels are made available by the base station within each CDMA RF channel. A bandwidth manager is connected to the transceiver, and when the transceiver is actively sending data, at least one orthogonal subchannel is allocated by the base station on an as-needed basis. The number of orthogonal subchannels being allocated changes during a given session. The transceiver, when powered on but not actively sending data, provides an idling mode connection on a reverse link. The idling mode connection is based on an orthogonal subchannel shared with at least one other subscriber access unit, but utilizes different time slots of the shared orthogonal subchannel.
