Abstract: A VDSL customer drop testing arrangement and equipment utilizes a test set top box having a sign-on identifier unique to an authorized test device to perform testing of the customer drop without the need to provision the drop for receipt of video programming or data services from any network information or service providers (VIPs or DSPs). Because the test arrangement of the present invention does not require such provisioning, isolation of the customer drop is achieved. Such isolation insures that the test set is not being affected by problems originated from a VIP or DSP.

Abstract: In the course of a reflectometry-based qualification procedure of a local loop, which connects customer premises to a central office of a telecommunication network, and in the event of being unable to identify the loop termination associated with the customer premises, a second reflectometry measurement of the local loop is carried out with a different impedance load at the customer premises. Next, the two reflectograms are compared with each other in the time domain in order to delineate among all the reflections those at the customer premises and to determine therefrom the position of the customer premises in the local loop.

  • Patent number: 7042983
Abstract: A method and system for qualifying telephone lines for high speed data services. The system takes measurements on a line under test and matches those measurements to a model of a line. The model of the line is used to predict whether the line will support data services at a particular level. If the model of the line includes a service affecting condition that is removable from the line, a new model is created reflecting the line as it would appear with the service affecting condition removed. The new model is then used to predict performance. If the required performance level is predicted based on the new model, the line is categorized as a line that can not support the required level of data services, but could if repaired. In this way, an accurate and useful prediction of line performance is provided.

Abstract: An apparatus and technique for determining whether a telephone loop is capable of carrying a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) signal. Time domain reflected (TDR) signals that are echoes of transmit impulse signals are processed using time domain echo averaging and echo enhancement using second-order statistics. • Patent number: 7003078
Abstract: A method and apparatus for qualifying a telephone transmission line for XDSL communication services is disclosed. The system includes a modem, located at the customer premises to be connected. The modem analyzes actual signals to determine the electrical characteristics of the communication channel associated with the customer premises. The modem includes a transmitter, receiver and controller to generate test signals and receive responses. The modem then analyzes the data to generate an output value indicative of the electrical characteristics of the communication channel being tested. This output value is then displayed to a user or transmitted over the communication channel to a network. The system thereby eliminates the necessity of dispatching a technician to test the telephone line, and provides more accurate test results than those achievable at the network-side of the connection alone.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a new device or service can be treated as an abstraction, allowing a model to be created which mimics operation of the device or service, but which does not physically exist. A communication system may then take physical assets that are distributed around a network, such as circuit packs with ports on them, and virtually plug them into a shelf that does not physically exist. A legacy system preferably continues to function as it always has and the abstraction mediates between the legacy operations support systems, the virtual machine and the physical reality. This then allows for the continued use of existing operation systems to manage new network architectures with services different from those originally contemplated by the legacy operations support systems.

The first port transmits the first analog signal across a first subscriber loop to a telephony communication network. The network, via A/D and D/A conversion, translates the first analog signal to a second analog signal and transmits the second analog signal to the second port via a second subscriber loop. The system further includes a plurality of data line cards for connecting to the backplane and backplane subset conductors, the data line cards being adapted to couple the high speed data between the subscriber line and the backplane, whereby the high speed digital data can be routed over the backplane subset to any of the digital data line cards without interfering with the voice signals routed to voice line cards.

  • Patent number: 6870903
Abstract: A telecommunications system includes a telephone exchange and a customer services terminal whose input is connected to the telephone exchange, and whose plural outputs are individually connected to one of a plurality of telephone lines. A plurality of interface circuits within the customer services terminal are individually connected intermediate the input and one of the plural outputs. Self-test means provides for the testing of selected interface circuits. Loop-test means provides for the testing of selected telephone lines. A self-test relay is responsive to the self-test means and operates to disconnect the selected outputs from corresponding telephone lines as self-test conditions are applied to selected interface circuits as these interface circuits are disconnected from the selected telephone lines. The loop test means applies loop-test conditions to selected interface circuits, while the selected interface circuits and the corresponding outputs remain connected to the corresponding telephone lines.

The coupling circuits are controllably enabled/disabled in association with the particular circuit function required, while the controlled switching circuit selectively connects each coupling circuit with the external component. Through combined control of the coupling circuits and the switching circuit, respectively different circuit functions can be implemented with the same external component.

Abstract: The invention includes a system and a method for testing a communication network. The inventive method transmits a first signal from a first point to a second point of the communication network, where the first and the second points are remotely located. The inventive method further includes recording a first time value of the transmitting of the first signal using a first clock, receiving a second signal at the second point of the communication network, and recording a second time value of the receiving using a second clock. • Patent number: 6845149
Abstract: A system and method of communicating between a central office and a plurality of subscriber sites. Subscriber sites are separated into frequency groups. Each group spans a distance along the cable such that no more than a predetermined amount of attenuation is required to equalize the signal power of signals sent from a site in the group. Frequency groups closer to the central office are assigned higher frequency bands than frequency groups farther away from the central office. The central office includes a plurality of filters, each of which has a passband for passing the frequency band of a group and a stop band that substantially attenuates the frequencies of the other groups. The frequency group nearest the central office has no filter. The passband of a filter may also provide any needed attenuation to assure that signals arriving at the central office have approximately the same power levels.

  • Patent number: 6819746
Abstract: A technique for qualification of loops for new digital subscriber line services (DSL) involves use of an expert system, such as a neural network. A database of loop characteristic information and performance data enables the expert system to train or learn how to predict performance for future loops. In response to data characterizing a new loop to be qualified, the trained expert system predicts digital subscriber line performance for the new loop. Typically, the prediction enables classification of service capacity for the new loop into one of several classes corresponding to levels of DSL service offered through the network. The database for use by the expert system is updated as each newly qualified loop is brought into service and actual performance for that loop is known.

The abnormal condition is detected by measuring voltage and/or current on the tip line and/or ring line. In response to an excess voltage or current, the ringing current or other output current is reduced to achieve desired safety and/or compliance with standards.
