Abstract: Metrology apparatus is described that includes a first structure rotatably connected to a second structure by a bearing arrangement. The bearing arrangement includes at least a first friction bearing including parts in sliding contact during rotation of the first structure relative to the second structure. The apparatus includes at least one magnet that relieves the load on the first friction bearing. Multiple magnets, provided in an attracting or repelling arrangement, may be used. The metrology apparatus may include an articulating probe head for a coordinate positioning apparatus.

Abstract: A motor includes a base, a stator and a rotor. Abstract: A method for delashing a shaft assembly and an assembly embodying the method are disclosed. The assembly includes a housing having a bore extending therethrough, and a shaft mounted within the bore. A shoulder extends into the bore to define a constriction along the bore. A bushing is positioned on an end of the shaft such that at least a portion of the bushing is spaced apart from the shoulder to define a cavity therebetween when the shaft is in the bore. A filler material is disposed in the cavity between the bushing and the shoulder for maintaining an axial compressive load on the shaft. In another aspect, a plug formed from a fusible material is provided. The plug includes a base portion and a plurality of channels disposed along an exterior of the base portion for enabling a flow of melted plug material along the channels.
Abstract: A dynamic spindle adjustment permitting an adjustment movement for the compensation of a wobble of the body held by the work spindle is provided on the spindle bearing of a machine tool. The regulation is designed at least dynamically enough for the regulation to permit a reliable tracking of the rotating work spindle. As a result of this, one or more spindles can be moved relative to a stationary machine in such a manner that the path of a body held on the work spindle represents an ideal rotation about the desired body axis, that is, the axis of symmetry. The compensation motion can be achieved by energizing appropriate actuators of the bearing devices with sinusoidal and cosinusoidal adjustment signals, which are superimposed to produce a circular motion of the affected bearing device. This circular motion compensates for orbital motions of the misaligned body (7) held on the work spindle.
Abstract: A bearing arrangement for an articulatable support (6) comprises bearing assemblies (20/28, 22/29, 24/30 and 26/32). In one embodiment the assemblies comprise a ball (20, 22, 24, 26) and aperture (40 FIG. 2) having sliding contact at discrete areas (36) during relative rotation. In another embodiment the sliding contact may be formed at a ball (20,22,24,26) and a plastics e.g. P.T.F.E. support (84, 85 FIGS. 10 and 11). Resilient displacement of the bearing contact along a rotational axis (A and B) is provided by planar spring supports (28, 32) and rigid support is provided by supports (29 and 30).

The base is provided on a top with a substantially ring-shaped receiving seat, into which the swivel gear is rotatably mounted. A threaded hole is provided on a predetermined position on the receiving seat for a screwing element to screw thereinto and set the receiving seat to a desired tightness relative to the swivel gear mounted therein. Abstract: A high precision friction drive positioning stage system is described. The friction drive positioning stage system uses three special actuation systems, each having a tip in contact with the stage and being capable of generating directional elliptical motion which allows the stage to move in any direction in the plane of the stage and in rotation. In one embodiment, each actuation system includes a plurality of piezoelectric elements in contact with a hat-shaped element at which the tip of the actuation system is located.
Abstract: A method and a shaft bearing for influencing machine background noise emitted by at least by one rotating part of the machine, especially for influencing the background noise within a passenger compartment of a motor vehicle. The amplitudes and/or the frequencies of primary vibrations which cause the background noise are preferably lessened and/or supplemented by controlled external interventions. The mounting conditions between the shaft bearing and a rotating part held in the machine shaft bearing, especially a shaft, is varied by a radial adjustment unit having piezo elements. The transfer function of the vibrations, especially the vibrations producing the sound waves, present between the rotating part and the shaft bearing or a component in contact with the shaft bearing, is varied.
Abstract: This system for fixing and guiding a bearing (3) in a slot (5) in a frame (8) comprises elongate flat fixing members (14) extending straddle-fashion between the coplanar respective end faces of the respective uprights (6, 7) of the frame and of the said bearing (3). Abstract: The device allows a lateral bearing block of a roller in a roller group for supporting and moving an endless moved web to be adjusted. The endless web may be a traveling screen, conveyor belt or the like in papermaking plant. When the slide carrying the lateral bearing block is displaced by an actuator along at least one guide rail, it is displaced relative to a frame in the conveying direction of the roller section. As a result, the angular orientation of the rotational axis of the roller mounted in the bearing block is varied. A sliding element is releasably fastened to the slide. The sliding element, which is produced from a highly slideable material, is disposed between the slide and the at least one guide rail.
Abstract: In order to monitor the function of the sliding block bearing elements in view of the hydrostatically and/or hydrodynamically generated compressed oil film or, respectively, compressed oil cushion, given rotating drums seated on sliding blocks such as, for example, tube mills, and to control the operation in conformity with the result of the monitoring, it is inventively proposed that the lubricating gap thickness, i.e., the distance between the bearing surface of the sliding bearing shoe and the running surface of the rotating drum supported thereon via the lubricating gap or, respectively, the compressed oil film, is directly measured during operation and the rotating drum operation is controlled dependent on this measured quantity.
Abstract: An oblong hole guide is provided between two structural component parts of which the first, guiding structural component part has an oblong hole in which a guide bushing can glide in an adjustable manner transverse to its longitudinal axis, and which is fastened to the second, guided structural component part with the help of a bolt that penetrates it longitudinally. The bolt is anchored in the thread bore which is inserted into the guided structural component part. The hole guide is designed in such a manner that an easy adjustment is guaranteed without a bending out of line between the structural component parts, even in case of greater angular tolerances among the corresponding elements, by having the bolt penetrate the guide bushing with radial play, the thread bore is groove and an axial end of the guide bushing, which is supported by the guided structural component part, is externally chamfered and penetrates the groove area of the thread bore.
Abstract: The present bearing assembly is for use with a wastewater treatment apparatus which is driven by a drive shaft, e.g., cog rake bar screens, or water treatment apparatus, e.g., paddle wheels in flocculation mixing tanks, and submerged, partially submerged or intermittently submerged in a fluid environment. The bearing assembly includes a tubular member keyed against rotation in a bearing housing with the tubular member bore surfaces engaged against the drive shaft surfaces without rolling elements disposed therebetween thus eliminating the need for lubricators to supply the bearings with grease. Accordingly, the present dry bearing assembly is not subject to failures caused by having the grease in the bearings flushed out by wastewater flows or by submerging of the lubricator.
Abstract: A bearing take-up apparatus is adapted to utilize a bearing assembly having a conventional flange bearing housing. The apparatus includes a bearing carrier mounted for slidable movement between a pair of parallel guide rails. The bearing carrier may be formed of a unitary piece of sheet metal according to known metal forming techniques. The bearing assembly is mounted to the bearing carrier to support a rotatable shaft. The bearing carrier is moved to a desired position along the guide rails utilizing an elongated transmission screw or the like. The arrangement facilitates replacement of the bearing assembly in the field.
Abstract: A load to be measured is transmitted to a load cell, such as a compression load cell, through a double piston, single cylinder load transmitter that has a pressure chamber between two pistons in the single cylinder. One piston bears against the load. The other piston bears against the load cell to form a floating link between the load and the load cell when a sufficient pressure is introduced into said pressure chamber to prevent unwanted, off-center load application force components from adversely affecting any measured results. Preferably, at least one axially outwardly facing end surface of the piston bearing against the load cell has a curved end surface area. A rocker pin with a pressure controllable variable length may be formed by making both axially outwardly facing end surfaces curved. Several load transmitters may be arranged in parallel to transmit larger loads into a load cell.

Abstract: Straw walker bearing having two bearing portions that are bolted together around a straw walker crank. The upper bearing portion is provided with mounting pads for mounting the straw walker pan to the bearing. Each bearing portion has a semi-cylindrical recess for accommodating the straw walker crank. Abstract: A high speed spindle is provided which includes a rotor driven by an electric motor and provided with tapered journals received in tapered rubber bearings. Lubricating water flows to the bearings through metered openings in the journals, flowing from the openings through reverse spiral grooves in the journals which have diminishing cross section. The water flowing through the rotor also cools the rotor, as well as the collet driven by the rotor and a tool held by the collet. Rubber seals around the rotor shaft wear to a zero clearance during run-in for confining the water that exhausts from the bearings. Compressed air is introduced into the spindle to cooperate with the seals in preventing water leakage. The compressed air also reacts against a bladder that is arranged to impose an end load on one of the bearings, which is movable, to urge the bearing toward its journal. The force is varied to increase the bearing end load as rotor speed increases.
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for adjusting the azimuth position of a capstan in a magnetic-tape apparatus relative to a reference plane, comprising a bearing plate which supports a capstan bearing through which the capstan extends. The capstan bearing or a part of this bearing is connected to the bearing plate by at least three single or multiple U-shaped supporting strips of a sheet material, which strips engage and are equidistantly spaced around the capstan bearing, the U-shapes extending in the plane of the supporting strips.
Abstract: A shaft is borne in a standard by an intermediate member and a supporting bearing so that the shaft may follow without constraint lateral shifts of the supporting bearing by tilts about a plurality of small angles located in different planes. This effect is achieved by providing one of two guiding rings for the shaft within the intermediate member with two small sliding projections. These projections may be vertically arranged on a diameter of the intermediate member, which in turn is mounted to the standard by two small seat-engaging surfaces which are horizontally arranged on a diameter of the intermediate member. The apparatus is preferably used with shaft angle encoders for theodolites.
Abstract: A sludge processor is provided which enables rapid disassembly and reassembly for changing between a sludge thickener configuration and a press configuration, and for enabling rapid disassembly for cleaning in the press configuration. The processor includes a frame with opposite sides and roller-holding bearing devices at the opposite sides for holding rollers about which a belt extends past a sludge dewatering region. The bearing devices can be arranged in a first configuration (FIG. 2) wherein the belt (12A) extends in an even path, and a second configuration (FIG. 1) wherein the belt extends in a tightly convoluted path so it and material thereon is squeezed between adjacent rollers. The bearing devices (50, FIG. 4) are releasably mounted to the frame sides to enable rapid conversion, and to enable rapid removal of the rollers for cleaning the processor when used in the second configuration.

Abstract: A bearing take-up apparatus is provided which allows easy removal of a bearing block supported by the bearing take up apparatus. Two slotted end walls extend from a base to support the threaded rod used with the bearing block and to prevent lateral movement of the rod. A covering piece has holes in one of its ends, which line up with a hole in an end wall. A throughbolt secures the covering piece to at least one of the slotted endwalls via holes in the endwalls, so that the throughbolt forms a hinge for the cover piece, when the other end of the covering piece is released. The threaded rod can be lifted and the bearing removed, when the cover piece is hinged upwards, about the throughbolt. The cover piece includes components to hold the threaded rod down when the cover piece is secured at both of its ends.

Abstract: In a method of supporting the bearing of a bearing support structure during balancing of a rotor, the bearing and the rotor journal in the bearing are permitted to rotate about the vertical, and transverse axes of the rotor journal. A spring arrangement is positioned between the bearing and vibration transducers for transferring unbalance information from the rotor being investigated to the vibration transducers. The spring arrangement allows the bearing and rotor journal to move without hindrance about the vertical, and transverse axes, such movement being caused from misalignment of the rotor journals with the axis of rotation of the rotor. Coulomb's friction is thereby eliminated for the purpose of avoiding excessively high constraining forces, spring realignment forces and frication forces.
Abstract: A capstan or pressure roller shaft is journalled in a single one-piece elongated bearing member having a bearing surface sufficient to define radial position and inclination of the shaft. The bearing member is aligned with respect to a mounting support on the tape recorder, to adjust shaft alignment, by two axially spaced cylindrical positioning surfaces which are received in axially spaced cylindrical receiving surfaces in the support. At least one of the positioning surfaces is eccentric with respect to the bearing member, and is fixed to the bearing member so that rotation of the bearing member about an axis defined by the receiving surfaces adjusts the inclination of the shaft. The shaft inclination may be adjusted by inserting a tool into the tape recorder, engaging a journal formed in a mounting support adjacent the bearing member, the tool having a gear which engages a toothed portion on the bearing member for rotating the bearing member about the support axis defined by the support receiving surfaces.
Abstract: An adjustable roller bearing for lateral guidance of travelling webs, e.g. a paper wire, comprises a bearing casing that is slidably mounted in a bearing foundation by the aid of members projecting diametrically from the bearing casing and bearing foundation and being in engagement with each other as well as encased by in hydraulic or pneumatic bellows which act to displace the bearing casing. The projecting members are provided with cooperating guide grooves and rollers respectively. The guide grooves are diametrically outside the contact faces of their associated roller, and have faces which in cross section follow a circular curve having the roller center as its center. Between each of these faces and the adjacent roller contact face there is a lining one end of which is adapted to the circular shape, whereas the other side, facing the roller contact face, is planar and forms a contact face for the corresponding roller.
Abstract: A bearing take-up frame including a base assembly having a top plate permanently, pivotally secured thereto at one end and removeably secured thereto at an opposite end. A bearing block assembly is received between the base assembly and the top plate for guided axial adjustment with respect thereto. End walls are secured to the base assembly and the top plate respectively, with a lower end wall defining a generally U-shaped slot. A threaded element is received in the U-shaped slot and held against axial movement, and has a transmission screw threadably received therethrough, an opposite end of which is secured to the bearing block. Rotation of the threaded element thus imparts movement to the bearing block. By releasing and pivoting the top wall upwardly, the bearing block, transmission screw and threaded element may be removed or installed.
Abstract: Unwanted vibrations in rotating machinery are controlled from an "active" point of view, meaning, that certain parameters, and thereby vibrations, can be controlled while the machine is operating. This is accomplished from the theoretical knowledge known about rotor dynamics, mechanical vibrations, automatic controls, fluid dynamics, and bearing design theory to produce an active remedy to fundamental vibration problems. From the known information about the critical speeds of a machine and while the speed transients are occuring, active controls cause these critical speeds to be made variable and always away from the actual running speed. By this means, the machine does not have to "run through" the critical speeds but rather, the critical speeds are jumped over by control of certain parameters. This approach is novel but may be accomplished by several different techniques, of which a variety are presented herein.

Abstract: A watthour meter frame for an electric watthour meter includes pairs of orthogonal machined plane surfaces against which bearings are urged for accurately positioning the ends of a disk shaft of an electric watthour meter. Clearances are provided in the watthour meter frame for machining all pairs of machined surfaces without either changing the cutting tool or rotating the watthour meter frame. Worm gear bearings are similarly positioned in the watthour meter frame against three machined plane surfaces which may be machined in the same operation, and with the same cutting tool, as used in forming the pairs of machined surfaces for the disk shaft bearings. The worm gear bearings include a cylindrical barrel which is resiliently urged into contact with a pair of plane machined surfaces in a bearing well and a positioning flange having a bearing surface which is resiliently urged into a face surface surrounding the bearing well.

Abstract: The end of an axle spindle is provided with right hand and left hand threads to receive respective axle nuts. The inner nut thread diameter is larger than the outer nut thread diameter in order to avoid interference. The wheel, bearings and an inner nonrotatable washer on the axle spindle are secured in place by tightening the inner nut to an initial snug (no clearance) condition against the face of the nonrotatable washer. One of eight holes on the outer face of the inner nut receives a projecting pin of a spacing control device which pin projects a predetermined distance. The outer nut is turned until the spacing control device engages one of the eight recesses. Then the flats of both nuts are tightened by a spanner wrench which causes the inner nut to "back off". The method is to create a space between nuts (e.g. by use of a shim spacer) which converts to an appropriate clearance space between the inner nut and nonrotatable washer in the final condition and to maintain that space in the final condition.
