  • Patent number: 5644888
Abstract: Pultruded composite members which interfit to form a rigid post and beam, or beam and brace, are adapted for use in heavy construction in such applications as bridges, buildings including high rise structures, ship deck and the like. Two pultruded shapes are used for the entire framework. A first member ordinarily serving as a beam is pultruded as a completely enclosed thick-walled I-beam with an internal channel which is formed with a continuous scalloped or toothed cross-section on both sides. The mating support member has a bifurcated end with outer sides configured to interlock with the sides of the internal channel of the I-beam. Access into the channel is provided by periodic windows milled into the beam at the precise entry points of the insertion member. The bifurcated end of the insertion member compresses adequately to be inserted into the channel of the cross-beam, where it expands such that the external teeth engage the scalloped walls of the I-beam and lock securely into place.

Abstract: A connection in a wood frame building wherein a one piece sheet metal hanger connector is used to join together a wood supporting member, and one or two wood supported members. The connector is connected to the supporting member by a top flange and the supported members are joined to the connector as well as to the supporting member by fasteners driven through openings in flanges of the connector, through the supporting member, through the back wall of the connector and into the supporting member. The arrangement places the fasteners in double shear resulting in unusually large load holding capability for the size and weight of the sheet metal connector. The connector seat is fully supported at the sides and back resulting in high load holding capacity both downwardly and upwardly with unusual rigidity and resistance to lateral forces.

  • Patent number: 4641480
Abstract: A connector plate and tail truss are combined so that the formation of a floor truss of the tail truss type results wherein an extension of the top chord of the vertically spaced parallel chords extends outwardly beyond the end members of the truss so as to support the same on a bearing wall. The connector plate is of a general T-shape having a plurality of teeth struck therefrom with each of the plurality of teeth having a twisted shape with the outer portion of each of the teeth lying at approximately 50 degrees to the inner portion thereof adjacent the plate from which the teeth are struck. The twisted configuration of the teeth is such that any tendency of the truss to move vertically relative to the extended end portions thereof is resisted by the several teeth which tend to move inwardly of the timber of the truss so that the combined truss and connector plate resists sagging of the truss that would otherwise occur.
